Bruce:

I am a new member to yenko.net and I saw Belair62's request for members' rides. I wrote him and he told me to send the information directly to you and gave me your e-mail address. Unfortunately, I can only send three pictures at a time on my e-mail. So, I'll send you three or four and please let me know if you would like more photos. All that I have done to the car is maintenance, tuning and quite a bit of cleaning.

I have 20 cars and all of them are GM products with the exception of one Mopar but, this car is pretty special and I thought the folks might enjoy it.

This is a 1963 Impala SS Convertible. It has 38,413 miles on it. It is all original including Paint, Glass, Interior, Drivetrain, Convertible Top, etc. It is equipped with the following: 409/340 HP, 4-Speed, Posi-traction, PS, PB, Factory Tach and it was ordered as a radio delete car. A Motorola AM/FM was installed at the dealership along with a Motorola Alternator but I still have the radio delete plate and all of the paperwork.

I purchased the car from an 82 year old farmer and his wife at a farm auction that included a number of tractors and 1920s and 1930s cars and trucks. He purchased the car from the widow of the original owner and I have the November '86 Hemming Motor News that he circled the ad in. I also have quite a bit of paperwork including the Original Window Sicker and Owner Protection Plan.

Please see the attached pictures and I will send you some more.

Thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Edman Lis
Bruce:
Here's some more pictures of paperwork.
I also have a lot of pictures of the undercarriage that people might be interested in. The Impala still has original springs and front shocks. In the rear the dealer installed Delco Pleasurizer air shocks and they still work. The undercarriage, differential and transmission have quite a few inspection markings as well.
Please let me know if you would like to see more.
Thanks again for your consideration,
Ed
Ed Lis (1969z280 on yenko.net)
Bruce:

The attached photos are of the undercarriage. The only thing that I've done to the car is clean it. So, everything is pretty much original condition. Please note: Most of the exhaust is original including the mufflers.
Thanks, Ed

Bruce:

The attached are photos of the factory inspection markings. Please note the positraction and transmission tags.

That's it.

Thanks, Ed Lis

Now that is a beautiful car! Original, untouched 409's just seem to be so far and few between. My father built and raced '09's back in the day and I've spent so much time around them that they will always be my first love. Have to say that the '409' in grease pencil on the firewall is the first time I've ever seen that. You seein' this, Verne?

Now that has wow factor, a true time capsule. Amazingly untouched with all the patina and provenance you could ask for. Thanks for sharing...

------What a beautiful 63!!! Original red on red cars are just so rare and then the 409 and three pedals,,,,,whoa! Grew up somewhat close to where this car was bought new and can tell you guys from more affluent areas of the country that the fella that ordered this SS was very likely the only guy around with a deeeeluxe ride like this. The rust dissolving stuff that we have been talking about here on the sight would seem to me to be the next step.......Bill S

Wow...what a nice car. I'm learning more about the 409's as everyone I know is crazy about them. Went for my first ride in one a few weeks ago and it was quite a car.

Edman, Very nice car!!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif Good docs! I'm also a little surprised to see the "409" pencil on the firewall. I'm also a bit surprised to see a T-10 in a car that late. They started shipping Muncies to the plants in Feb. '63. Do you have service records for the car? The reason I ask is the power brake booster and master cyl are not the type the assembly plant would have installed, so I'm wondering if it was replaced in service. How about posting a picture of the cowl tag? Have you ever pulled the rear back to look for a built sheet? Is the VIN derivative stamped on the engine pad? There should also be a VIN on the trans case, just behind the side cover. Verifying those items would nail down the provenance of the car tight! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Sorry for so many questions, but these cars intrigue me.

Thanks for all of the compliments on my Impala. First, I am remiss in not mentioning my brother-in-law, Dennis Laughlin, who actually went in as a partner with me when I first bought the car and has performed the lion's share of cleaning and maintenance. Dennis is a long time CCI member and I call him the professor because he has forgotten more about these old Chevys than I will ever know.

Verne, I will send a photo of the cowl tag to Bruce and ask him to post it. So you know, it's an 04D build date. The pad is stamped T0418QC along with the VIN reference which is not gang stamped but individually stamped. I will send a photo as well. Lastly, I did not see the VIN on the trans but it does have a tag. I have the car kind of buried right now but as soon as I get it back out (when it quits snowing in Indiana in April) I will check it for you. Please feel free to PM me if you have any other questions as I really dig the archeology side of survivors.

I have some more survivors and if Bruce allows me I'll send in another write-up or two. All original 1957 BelAir HT V8 with 46,000 one owner miles and every piece of paper that ever came with it and a 68 Firebird 400 4-Speed Posi car that is completely untouched with original belts, hoses, window sticker, build sheet, protecto-plate and California Black Plates (my favorite in case you couldn't tell).

Thanks again everybody and let me know if you need any more information. Enjoy the Impala, Ed

Ed,
I will pm you with other details. From what I've seen so far, I would like to visit the car in person and document it FULLY with your permission (at my own expense). Maybe we can arrange something when the car is available for an "interview".

Verne:

I don't understand who you are and why or for what reason you want to document my car. I thought that I was being accomodating answering your questions and I sent a bunch of pictures to Bruce based on your questions. You then write that you will come and document my car "at your expense"? Should I have to pay?

Am I missing something here? This isn't ebay. I thought I was just sharing my beautiful 63 Convertible with other enthusiasts that would find it interesting. The car is not for sale. I thought this was Member's Rides.

Again, am I missing something or is this some kind of new guy initiation? Ed http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

Belair62
04-12-2007, 03:51 AM
Yes you are missing something. Verne has been documenting these cars for an eternity with the New Jersey Late Great Chevy club.He is not looking to tell you if its real or not. He has a database with tons of information about these cars all drerived by his own hard work and looking at original cars. He has documented as many original cars for so many years that he helps people determine authenticity of these late great years.Cars like yours help greatly in verifying information that exists and helps if anything new pops up on the screen with these cars. The fact that he would want to come see your 63 is a compliment and a testament to it. Its a great car. When no Chevrolet paperwork exists...its good to know there are people that have worked a good portion of their life travelling all over the place looking at original cars, paperworked cars and noting which plant did what...how different plants coded things and grease penciled firewalls etc. Maybe your partner the professor has heard about ole Verne. Most people that have been involved with these year cars have heard of him. He was close friends with Moses !!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Ed, please understand that Verne has a passion for these cars and I think his enthusiasm was misinterpreted. This is rare opportunity to gain valuable knowledge from a benchmark car, and Verne is a true 409 historian who love to document and share his information. Man I love that car!!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Ed,
I understand your confusion. I don't want to buy your car; I just want to document it and about a thousand little details on it to add to the tiny bit I've already documented from other cars. I"ve flown and driven all over this country just for that experience.
By the way, the car has an AFB on it from a 2x4 409. It should have a Rochester 4GC (low silouette).
I'll be in touch later. I don't want you to feel uneasy about my interest. I'm unemployed; I can't afford to buy a car. But I'll spend my own money to gather details from an original. Just because somebody should.

Best regards,
Verne
