What decodes as M21 on the case? It looks to be a 325 case which is early with no rings on the input shaft.

which means it is a 7/8" countershaft = early trans

It still could be a M21...it could have a replacement input and thus would have no rings on it designating m20 or m21 . Only way to tell for certain is count the input teeth or the front cluster teeth.

Why would the replacement input shaft have no rings?

Don't know why but any over the counter replacement input I have seen came with no rings. It got real tricky in the early 70's with the dual plug 661 cases with the large shafts and fine spline inputs in the big pontiacs up here. They also for some reason never had any grooves and more than one of these m21's were sold off as M22.Joey's case is a 64/65 325 case from what I can see, small 7/8 pin.

You are correct it is a 64 65 tranny the shifter looks like a gto shifter but I am unsure what do you think?

Hi Joey:
Shifter does not look 64 /65 to me looks like 70-72 GTO. To be sure see if it has a 3138 stamped on the front which I think it will and put a shim down the side and pull the handle see if it is a 4555. If not let us know the number and I should be able to tell you the original application. Tks Joe

What's does the vin# read on top of the case. That should explain what it's out of.
