View Full Version : 1965 Chevelle 12 Bolt Question

I have what I believe to be the rarest 12 bolt rear end. I am going to post the number code in a picture so you know I am not making this up. Please decode this and tell me what you come up with. The code on the drivers side front is GA0119B casting number 3859140N and the date is L214 (December 21, 1964). It also has the larger 11 inch drum brakes. I look forward to your responses. GA would be the correct code (http://www.z16chevelle.com/Z16%20Facts.htm) for a `65 Z16 Chevelle.

Thank you. That is also what my book has listed. Indeed I have one of the 201 original 12 bolts from a Z16. No doubt a Z16 owner will be interested in it. According to the website many did not survive due to the high gear ratio (3.31). How do you put a price on an item like this?
CHEVELLE REAR END'S SELL FOR $550-$1200 THATS MY EXPERIENCE MOST ARE SOLD FOR $750

So a KQ 12 bolt from a 69 COPO Chevelle would sell for and average of 750.00 ??? If the pictures aint lying..a Z-16 rear is worth way more than even the higfh number of 1200.

PS very cool find http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Thanks Albert. I agree. I wonder if ebay is the place to sell it? Hard to place a price on an item like this.

If it is for a Z16 only I believe it is like finding a BE rear end. MRREC where are you ?

What I know about the Z16 rear end. It is unique in every way. It has special axles and tubes that are from the larger passenger car cut down to fit the Chevelle housing. So, it also has the larger axle bearings and 11 inch drums from the big cars. They only made this axle for the Z16 and we all know there were only 201 of those cars ever made. There is a Z16 owner out there that will be needing this correct axle.

MRREC will have a good idea at value. Great find. Joey...Out of the 20-30 rears you have sold in the last couple months, I'm guessing none of them were like this one.

Todd get a hold of MRREC HERE (http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showprofile.php?Cat=0&User=1039&page=11&what=showm embers)
He should be able to help you out with a value. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
BTW...nice white Nova you have there http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

Thanks for the compliment on my Nova. I had already sent an email to the Z16 registry to ask for info. They may not respond until Monday. Thanks for all of the useful information. Todd

I would imagine the value would be right up there with a BE rear if not higher. A very special unit.
Musclecar70
04-22-2007, 09:30 PM
I am thinking higher. Tell me what is special about the BE coded rear end. It is a special gear ratio/posi combined with a correct date code? But, what is unique other than that? How many were made?
The Z16 axle not only had special larger axles and bearings but also had specially modified brake drums to clear the very rare and Z16 only riveted wheels.

I have sold two of the Z16 rears in the past.
A bare housing went for $2200 and a complate rear went for $3500.
The BE rears used a special heat treated r&p set and a 4-series posi unit with special internals.
There was one made for every COPO car. I believe the rears
were one of the hold ups on the assembly of some of the COPO cars.
There are two "BE" coded rears on Ebay right now.
One is a restamp.
Last month a fake BE sold for $3173.21.
There is only one way to find out what you can get for it, and that is to list it.
And on the "KQ" Chavelle rears, I have been getting outbid on the real ones at $9K+.

Thanks Julian. May I ask where and when you sold them?

I didn't have them listed for sale. The buyers contacted me because they heard I had them.
About 3 and 5 years ago.

You have to remember rare does not garantee huge dollars for resale. You indeed have a very special item there however the group that would be interested in it is very small. If a Z16 owner needed one it will bring top dollars, if it is being purchased as just a spare not as much. It cannot be compared to KQ chevelle rears.
I wish you well with your sale and I am sure Dave will assist you with it's true value.

The market is probably larger than it once was. Especially since all the "clone" or "recreations" have been bringing so much $$$. I found a Z16 clone on BJ that sold for $40k recently. People are building Clones of everything and often buying original matching number parts for the big $$$ and getting it when they decide to sell.

Todd:
Thanks for sending the photo. I emailed you back. Yes, the Z16 rear is one of the toughest to find. Many cars have lost their rears. Of my four, two have their orig. I was extremely lucky to recently buy a beautiful orig GA rear. I would guess I paid more for it than most any 12 bolt has EVER sold for. I DO need a rear for my other car, Todd, and I will pay fairly for it.

I forgot to mention, Todd, the deal is contingent upon you donating a couple of bucks to the sYc - just click on the link at the top of the page. It's a great group of guys (except Kim.......) and there is a wealth of knowledge here. I have also heard that it might be a good way to buy and sell parts......

Wow, very complete. Does it still have the correct backing plates and rivited drums ?
mrrec
04-25-2007, 10:08 PM
Yes, Charley, all correct: backing plates, drums (rears are the same as big car and Vette, fronts were specially turned to clear the special offset, riveted wheels), Ebrake cables. The center was swapped out for a low gear and posi.

It's not here yet, Bruce. Todd emailed the photo of his crating job. He didn't ask if he should or charge $$ - he just thought a piece like that deserved a bulletproof shipping container. Neat, huh?
In fact, even though the grapevine says this rear came from a red/red car, it's entirely possible it came from my latest: the car pictured above that I got in Tennessee. With about 100 red cars, odds are pretty good......

This thread started out as asking what it was worth and then turned into a sale. I know it is not polite to ask a girl how many guys there were before you and or how much she weighs.....but can we get a close idea as to what the sale price was????????
