How much do you think a set of cast iron 3964290 would run a person?

good uncut matched pair would range from 250-400 usually. If that last 0 was a 1 (291) you would get a serious cashectomy

What's so special about the 291's?

1970 LS6 454/450 and L78 396/375 Closed chamber square port high compression, only came on the "special high perf" motors

291's are square ports and fit L78 and LS6 motors.
$1000-$2000 price wise.

The 290 heads are a good choice for a street performance BB build....chambers are little more open than the real early closed chamber heads and they have the oval ports, much better for low-mid range torque.....upgrade to 2.19/1.88 valves, unshroud the chambers a little for the larger valves, some minor port cleanup, good hardware and you have a great set of BB heads that will easily support 500hp. My next build is in progress with a set of these heads....another tip: if you are using a 2 bolt block add the releifs in the top of the cylinders like the 4 bolts had..helps those larger valves to breath.

I've been looking for a set of 290's for a while and they're not that easy to come by. I've had prices in the 600/700 range for a stripped pair, which will cost considerably more when finished. I think your looking at more like 800/1000 for a set of heads that are complete with a decent date code that only needing a freshening up. Good luck

P.S.If your not concerned about the casting number or date code look into a set of 69 1063's, they are the same head except for the plug size as the 70 switched to peanut plugs. The best price I've found so far for these heads is 400 for a bare set in Canada. Either way, they're not cheap as they don't make them anymore and there is a significant demand for them.

You said that you've been looking for a while, have you found any?

No, I haven't found a decent set of 290's yet but the best I've found is the 1063"s in Canada for 400 stripped. By the time I ship them and redo them I'm looking at 14-15 hundred. If anyone has a pair for 250-400 I'd buy 3 sets. I've had more luck finding single 290's and they usually want 400-500 per stripped head.

Tom,

I'm waiting for you to make that move. I want to see how
that project turns out. BTW, are you going to use the
'163 rectangular port intake with the oval port heads as
we discussed here a few months ago? I gotta say that I'm
a little more than curious myself at this combination. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

Steve, all the stuff is at the machine shop now....going to use a 69 396/350hp Nova block, steel crank, new rods, 11 to 1 compression...the 290's will get the bigger valves, some chamber and port work for better performance...looking at a couple different solid cams...leaning towards something a little tighter than the stock L78 cam with a little more lift....we will try 2 or 3 different intake manifolds, including the 163 and see the results on the dyno. Kind of an old school build with some upgrades....looking to make a some strong power...stay tuned.

Tom,

Perhaps you can post information on the flow numbers you get
with the oval port head modifications, assuming you bench
test them before the build. Also, who will be doing the
work on these oval port heads? I may want to use them as
well - especially if your build runs strong http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
