Thanks, Steve. I've seen the new editions. They look more like the PH Jr.'s that Cyclone made later on.

They do but not the original style that was a 4" tube all the way to the turn-out with mount straps welded to them.
The ones Motion pictured above are built more along the Junior version (though not exact) that Cyclone built because the original Hornie was, well, pretty damned throaty http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. The Junior version calmed the roar (one of those ticketable vehicle code things, ya know?) which was why you bought the Purple Hornies in the first place.
Once you broke the originals in, and yes, they were loud (loud being a relative term. I prefer to say they had a very distinct and authoritative pitch http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif), they were the best sounding header muffs built. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Wow, I had those Purple Hornies on my '70 Nova that was running a stout running Big Block. My dad made me shut it off two blocks from the house and coast into the driveway after 10pm, that was every night.. Good Luck! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Yep, they were a cool set of mufflers. Probably the next best thing to open headers (I didn't realize it "back in the day", but it was a good time growing up in small town Ohio).
Here's a grainy pic of my COPO in it's hot rod days. You can just see the PH's underneath. A BB with PH's was a very melodious combo. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

No one I knew had Purple Hornies back in the day. We all went for Cherry Bombs. And Thrush was the super low budge, uncool last resort.....

Me either!
I remember the Cherry Bombs as the cheapest and loudest - we would get the Thrush and hi-temp paint them flat black!

The year was 1973. Tacoma, Washington was cruising the Ave no different than in the movie "American Grafitti". 200 cars, spectacular factory muscle to rods on any given Fri or Sat night. Cyclone Purple Hornies hit the pavement with probably the nicest sounding header exhaust imaginable. The fat full length 4" tube ( might have been even 5" )with the turn down end could even make a Maverick sound sweet. Well, almost. lol. Mopars seemed to have the deep huskier tone, while the Chevrolets sounding just as sweet. In my home city, the cops got right on us running the original fat tubes. Header muffs were just coming around, that would simply bolt up to the flange. The tickets we were getting were rediculous. Cops hated them. There was actually a certain distance of where your exhaust dumped that they got us on. Stating exhaust fumes would enter into the car with the somewhat short Hornies. They soon came out with the "Juniors". But really...Who wanted "Juniors". Oh those were the sweetest rumble and by far the coolest muffer in existence. By the way, my ride of '73 was my '72 Chevy Vega GT. Unheard of at that time to transplant a V8 into them, but I did. Cortez silver, black Z28 stripes, '70 LT1 350, Turbohydro AT with B&M guts. B&M Series 60 shifter. This car was a mini Z28 but faster. With this car came a certain reputation...your car would lose. Thanks guys for the post. The memories are still sweet to share.
