I was given some pictures of an old Super Stock Meet at Union Grove, WI about 1970.
I'll post some of the other pics later, but
does anyone recognize this Dodge Dart?

Great pictures; that's when drag racing was the best in my opinion. No air shifters, to delay boxes just genuine musclecars going at it.
A few years ago I saw an old '65 GTO driven by an older gentleman. That guy could bang those gears and that Goat would run. He had writting on his windows that said "Pro Stick" and I thought to myself; now that would be a great class if they really had it. Real cars with manual transmissions racing down the dragstrip http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Fantastic photos. Brings back big time memories. My dad and I helped in the pits on the Gillings Brothers Camaro a few times. They ran UDRA. Fred and Bob Gillings built the engines for the first 2 cars I had when I was a kid- a '55 and a '57. I also bought a racing go kart from them when I was a young-un. They later sold that Camaro and for quite a while raced snowmobiles.

Lots of fun to see the old ones in action.
My friend used to know some racers like Animal Jim who was just at Joliet. He had pictures taken there of Jim with his daughter.
I'll have to ask him the name of the guy who took these pics.
Here's a few more.

Fantastic photos! Lately I've been having some serious regrets about the 1970 ex-Pro Stock Camaro I sold to another member of this site last summer. I've had a nagging feeling that something special slipped through my fingers. Still to be determined whose car it actually was back then, but there's some definite prospects in those photos, especially that King Speed Shop car. Thanks for sharing.

The first shot is Larry Griffith's '68 factory Super Stocker Dart (four speed) campaigned most likely in the '70 or '71 season. He had updated his '68 (still very competitive) with a new front and rear end clip of a 1970 Dart (seen here). Larry was the 1969 UDRA points champion racing his '68.

The pics are pretty much the size you're seeing here. You could probably blow them up with photoshop or something like it though. I'll try to make them bigger on my computer and see if the quality holds up.
ANDY M
05-28-2007, 06:39 PM
Rick, did you scan these pics? They were obviously taken with a quality 35mm or larger format camera, and if you can scan the negatives, it would be easier to blow up the photos. Using a flash at night means using very high speed film, ASA 400 or better. Very dense quality film designed for larger prints without losing resolution.
Any good scanner can reverse a negative to a positive image, so you can scan the negative at a higher resolution for enlargments than just scanning a print and trying to blow it up. Then you will run into pixalation problems. JMO.
I oftened wondered how the drivers felt about those flash bulbs going off when they were launching. That takes real concentration on the tree! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif
Rixls6
05-29-2007, 03:59 PM
Thanks Andy for the info about scanning the negatives. I wasn't the one who scanned these originally, so I'll contact the guy I got them from.
I did blow these up on the computer and they will go bigger without too much pixelation, but a negative scan sounds like it would work better.
