View Full Version : New Postal Rates, Totally Rediculous!

Is anyone else shocked by the new postal rates? The letter stamp increase does not seem too bad. However, the Priority Mail increase is crazy! I went to ship a set of 6 Camaro dog digh caps to a member today. The box weighed 6 1/2 pounds. In the past shipping would have been 15.50-16.50. It is now $35.50! I am going to start shipping everything but flat rate boxes through FedEx Ground. One would think the post office would have been making more on shipping due to the large influx of Ebay shipments in recent years. It really sucks when a government owned company has rates much higher than independants such as UPS or FedEx.

Any Opinions?

The postal service wants to be in the letter business, not the package business.

flat rate and shipping with free boxes still looks like a better deal than trying to have the other guys do a pick up and find my own packing material. In my area everything but the post office is a hassle, UPS only picks up with a pre phoned-in request, otherwise I'd have to drive far to drop off. I like complaining at the post office because they don't speak english at the gas station.

I just looked up the rates for 6.5 lbs. and it should have only been about $12.00 unless you sent it express for about $37.00. what zip did you ship from - to?

I've seen some confusion with the new rates and sizes and the old clerks. Demand a recount!

Then why do they ship packages?

The USPS has been around a lot longer than UPS, so they have always been package shippers, primarily to residential addresses. It wasn't until UPS expanded in the '80s and FedX, RPS, DHL, Airborne et.al. came to make the residential market competitive. FedX bought RPS to create FedX ground. DHL bought Airborne to expand their domestic marketshare.
Keep in mind that the postal service would deliver anything anywhere, mostly losing money in the process. When UPS decided to get into the residential market, all of the big catalogue companies like Sears and Spiegel switched to UPS for the cost savings, making it profitible for UPS. If you asked the postal guys, it's still a money losing proposition from them to be a package shipper. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

You must have been charged for Express Mail. Here are the rates for 6 1/2 pounds from Los Angeles to New York City, quoted from USPS.com.

Express MailŪ (Overnight to most areas) $36.90
Priority MailŪ (2-3 days) 18.30
Parcel PostŪ (Additional Fees May Apply) 7 days 12.88

Sombody must have punched the wrong button on the screen.

18.30 is what the USPS website will tell you. But once you type in the dimensions it is a whole different story. This is not a large package either. Also, my memory must not be great, its $31.25 not $35.50.

Were you using paypal to ship your item? Looks like a paypal screen. If so, could there be some paypal fees or markup?

Rich,

Did you get my email? They are going out FedEx Ground tomorrow. They will be there when you get back. Have a great time in Rome! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I believe that the USPS does not have airplanes anymore. I think they use FED EX to do their air mail. For $.41 I don't think any country in the world can ship a letter cross country for that. I am just happy we still have the freedom to ship things without much problem. Sam

Just some feedback. When USPS changed their rates in the US some how it also spread into the canada post numbers.Just in the last few months I have seen the rate for the same weight and dimension parcel jump over 33% especially to california and other western states. They tell me on this end it is due to the high fuel costs but I am not sure.
DHL is 7 hours away for me and we don't have UPS so I am at the mercy of canada post.

A guy goes to the U.S. Post Office to apply for a job.

The interviewer asks him, "Have you been in the service?"

"Yes," he says. "I was in Vietnam for three years."

The interviewer says, "That will give you extra points toward employment" and then asks, "Are you disabled in any way?

The guy says, "Yes 100%...a mortar round exploded near me and blew my testicles off."

The interviewer tells the guy, "O.K. I can hire you right now. The hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. You can start tomorrow. Come in at 10:00 A.M."

The guy is puzzled and says, "If the hours are from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. then why do you want me ! to come in at 10:00 A.M.?"

"This is a government job" the interviewer says. "For the first two hours we stand around scratching our b@!!s, no point in you coming in for that."
