This topic was posted by Dreemz recently. Looks like HMM will get into it a bit more:

Heads up!

The July issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines will feature Joe Oldham's recollections of the NYC street-racing scene
Here’s a heads up about a feature story in the July 2007 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines covering New York City’s street racing subculture in the 1960s. (It should be on newsstands shortly. Look for a blue 1968 Yenko Camaro on the cover.)
“Wild in the Streets” is longtime automotive journalist Joe Oldham’s account of New York City’s illegal drag racing scene in the 1960s. The story includes a smattering of vintage photos, as well as Oldham’s first-person account of the action, as told to our own Jim Donnelly.
If you like what you see in HMM, you might want to pick up Oldham’s book Muscle Car Confidential from MBI Publishing. In fact, it just so happens that a capsule review of the book also appears in the July ’07 issue of HMM. Look for that in the Speedobilia column on page 16.

P.S. Who's Yenko is on the cover?

Street racing in NY in the early 70's was wild. I grew up outside the city. On the weekends in Spring Valley NY ( Rockland County ) about 25 miles north of the city was a shopping center called Shoppers Paradise. Cars would start arriving around 11 or so. Driven, trailed you name it. Cars would race on the NY State Thruway that exited from NJ. They would STOP traffic and race. Cars would line both sides Wild just Wild

The RS above is clean enough to be a show car. What a killer it is too.

Just got my HMM last night- I know the car on the cover really well, it is the 68 Yenko #8021 that I bought from Andy Wolff. That is the car prior to the resto I am literally just getting wrapped up this week. Hopefully I can get the 500 break in miles on the motor my engine guy wants to see before it hits the track at SCR-10!

A very pleasant suprise to see the car in the magazine.

I thought Andy Wolf was a previous owner of the giveaway car which was #8008? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I think #8021 was previously owned by Johnny Griffin in TN.

I assure you Andy Wolff owned #8021. I purchased the car from him in January 2007. It is the car in HMM. If you want to send me an email I'd be happy to send you back a scan of the COPO Connection paperwork in Andy's name from April of 2000 listing 8021 as his car. Johnny Griffin may have owned it in the past, all I know is Andy had the car for a long time and that is who I purchased it from. I don't have the list of the previous owners here with me today.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Colin

Congrats Colin... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I was surprised to read that information posted on here about one of Don's daughters being hired to apply stripes was a "myth". Hum....

The article in HMM says that the car belongs to Andy Wolfe.
Was the story written last year, and just now published? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I spoke to Andy Wolff many years ago, so I may have his car confused with the give-away car.

Just trying to keep the dbase straight - don't halucinate over it! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Colin, nothing personal here, it's all good. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
I hope you bring it to the SCR, and I hope that it runs well. Mostly, I congradulate on what you do for the integrity of the hobby. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif
Having said that, can I drive it? Please? Pretty Please? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

speaking of NYC back in the 70's..

anybody ever heard of a book called
"cop without a badge'.

it was about some guy in NYC who was a car thief/bank robber.he ended up being a snitch for the FBI.

wrote about all the Hemi cars he stole, and running from the cops, street racing, and interesting theories on what cars were best for running from the cops in.
