He's taking a swing at my industry this time. A few years ago we were told to watch out because Mr. Moore was offering 50k to set up a camera in a doctors office to film the Pharma reps in action. How is 50 thousand dollars not considered a bribe??? I could only offer a steak at Peter Luggers in hopes of getting more than 30 seconds to discuss my product.

I'll say this about health care in this country: the moment it became a for-profit industry we humans became too expensive to care for. The current HMO system is set up to deny care in every possible instance, much the same as in any insurance company: limit the payout any way possible. Cost control is KING in business and the only way to control cost in the HMO industry is to place a limit on the number of people who actually receive care.

Ask yourself what you would want if you or your children got sick, like cancer sick. Would you want the best care available or would you allow yourself to be ignored and stonewalled by insurance companies? If you're lucky you and your family will be covered and actually get the best care available. Most of us will have to sell our homes, our cars, cash-in our savings and hope to God that we survive our illness and then work our way back to health, both physically and financially.

In fairness to the HMO industry I will put on my HMO CEO hat: How do I preserve profits and reward myself and my shareholders with the highest possible rate of return? I'll have to limit the payout and the best way to do that is to limit the number of people who actually receive care. If I can keep that number as low as possible while the premiums/pay-in remain at high levels then we make money. That is the CEO's job: make money. (Making large sums of money can be an unsightly and dark process, as we see here.)

The current system allows people to die on a cost-benefit analysis basis. If the HMO thinks you're going to die anyway then they deny coverage outright or stonewall you until you die.

Michael Moore or no Michael Moore, the US health care system is set up for profit FIRST and the actual providing of care is a distant second. It is a HUGE problem and there probably won't be an answer to how we deal with it in our lifetimes, Hillary Clinton or no Hillary Clinton.

Old people always tell you, "If you have your helath that's all you need." It has never been more true.

Oh, and as repulsive as Moore is to some people, he does make you think, and that's what HMO's definitely don't want you to do! Don't ask questions either. If the HMO puts you on hold for hours, week after week, month after month, and you finally give up and never call back then they have succeeded in controlling cost by preventing a payout. Mission accomplished.

(I have not seen Moore's movie.)

I hear you Ken and we agree more than we disagree on the details. All I said was that it is a HUGE problem and there probably won't be an answer to how we deal with it in our lifetimes.

We are already paying, by the way. Poor people and the uninsured are already flooding the health care system. Go to any emergency room almost any time of day to see the poor, the unemployed, illegals, you name it, they are already in there 50 or more deep. We really don't have a homeless problem in my local area nor are there a lot of poor people--until you go to the emergency room. These people don't care about Michael Moore or insurance or what it costs, they have bypassed all that and gone to the hospital. It's the rest of us who pay our HMO premiums (and taxes!) and then get dicked-around by our HMOs. Somebody tell me who's the smart one here?

By the way, anybody see the story about the Mexican lady who died on the floor of an ER waiting room in Los Angeles a few days ago? Witnesses even called 911 from the waiting room as she vomited blood and died and no one from the hospital staff (as far as we know at this point) did anything to help her. The 911 operator put the blame on the caller! There's probably more to this story but it doesn't look good so far.

As for lawyers, they are into everything. Everything lucrative, that is. (I know, lawyers gotta' eat too.)

As for John Edwards, I am not impressed with anyone running for president in 2008. I'm still not ruling-out a late entry by Jeb Bush, say, by next spring, jumping in as the man on horse-back come here to save us. Iraq's a mess though so he may cough twice and pass this time.

We do live in interesting times.

My wife cannot get _any_ medical insurance in the U.S. because she _had_ Hep C and even though she was cured we just can't qualify. We use our AAA card to get discounts on prescription drugs. Neither of us has employer insurance. I'm holding on to my Canadian citizenship so's we can scoot back soon as something serious comes down.

This to say you dudes should maybe put aside your pre-conceived opinions of Michael Moore and listen to what he has to say about this health care situation.

I'll bet there are other folks on this website with similar stories. I've lived in Canada, England, and U.S.-- our 3 kids were born in all 3 countries -- so, I have a somewhat 'informed' opinion on the matter.

HERE is the real problem with health care today!!! YOU, ME & THEM ,in other words ALL of us period. I started in the Insurance bus. 35 years ago,we didn't sell health care Insurance. We sold major Medical Hospital plans. They covered hospital stay no Dr bills. First thing people complained it didn't cover the dr. bills, so the dr. put you in the hospital, now it's covered. The expense went up FAST. Now the insurance companies came up with out patient care, we complained about it next. Their complaint was were sent home Tooo early. The costs today are direct results from wanting everything covered. We are all to blame for this, drs. lawyers, patients & the public. Bill you can't blame the Insurance Companies by trying to drop the cost. Again THAT'S WHAT WE WANTED!!!! Denis you stated your wife can't get health insurance because of health problems. Every state in the USA offers COMP HEALTH PLANS. It's the law.Again we wanted this. Check with your Insurance Agent. We live in the greatest Country in the WORLD and we still complain!!! We have the best health care in WORLD bar none. The system is not broken. If you think federal health care is the answer ask the boys up north how will that's working out for them. If you have a heart att. there you have 37% chance of making it!! WOW We are a country of SPOILED BRATTS with 69% of us are dissatisfied. MICHEAL MOORE IS STILL A IDIOT. Sorry for my rant. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Back in the early spring of 2002 I started having chest pains when exerting myself. I've been known to do that once in a while. With the speed of our system an attempted angioplasty wasn't performed until late in the fall. By then the artery was completely blocked. Fortunately for me, the heart had created a bypass artery on its own. Didn't know that happened before. I might be pushing up daisies by now if it hadn't. Lineups for treatments are so long that people are being shipped south of the border to Buffalo and other places to get emergency surgery done.....at the extra cost to our health care system. Here in Peterborough, they are tearing down a perfectly good hospital that was built in 1950 so that they can build a new one. Like anything government run, they can't seem to spend enough money. Perhaps they should tear down every house in town that was built before 1950. That might get a few people's attention. Shouldn't complain too much though. We don't lose everything if we get sick. Something to be said for that. Of courser we are one of the highest taxed population in the world. Wonder why?

I have to disagree My wife had been laid off two months ago
Me I am on disability and have Medicare My wife has been looking for a job BUT when you hit 55 + no one WILL hire you Any way I have been trying to get Medical Insurance for my wife and this is what am told Since she is a diabetic no insurance company will give her health insurance . I do not know what law you are talking about because after two month s of trying she can not get health insurance. So I know Denis is right here. The insurance companies are all out for them self’s I hate them with a passion
Think what you want but the insurance companies WILL NOT gave you heath insurance
If you have an health issue I know I have tried
Don’t think Michael Moore is far from the truth Most Heath insurance companies are bad new’s

Insurance companies are legalized bookmakers. You bet that something bad will happen, they examine the risk involved (think of it as making the point spread), and bet that it won't happen. Low risk, lower premium. High risk, high or no premium. Like Norm, I too am on disability, but thank God that my wife works for the state. Without her, I would not be on this board, much less the internet.
Michael Moore is not a liar, but is very good at giving up selective information for you to see his point of view. He states facts that prove his point of view, but with no objectivity. Like it or not, the truth is an ugly beast, but it can be twisted like a pair of knickers. There is always the Bell Curve in effect, between outright lies at one end and pure truth at the other. Seek first to understand, so that you can be understood. Better to take a stance based on facts, than an opinion based on emotions. JMHO

Kim, I did not mean to "shoot the messenger". Every insurance company has an actuary department to establish the amount of risk involved in issuing a policy. Hence, they are making the spread. If the insurer requires a physical before issuing a life policy, they want to bet that the policy holder won't die before the premium check is cashed.
You know all of this. I meant nothing personal. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I have a great deal of respect for the traditional Republican party. Everet Dirksen comes to mind. Chuck Hagel, and Chuck Grassley serving now. And while I respectfully disagree with them on many issues, I've also agreed on many. Republicans, as a rule are stoic, fiscally responsible, devoted to individual rights, and freedoms, and usually very competent. This administration is not. Most Democrats felt comfort in the knowledge after Bush was elected the first time that at least Colin Powell would steer him in the right path. Obviously he didn't listen to him, and here's where we are.
You all can hate ole Mikie Moore. I tend to think he expects it. But maybe you should go back and listen to Pat Buchanan. He's one of your own, and he's not happy with Mr. Bush.
As far as the Clinton's in Hell, now that's pretty harsh. I can think of far worse folks who ought to have their butts singed by ole beelzebob.
Let me share a personal moment that I had a couple of weeks ago that kinda speaks a little on America. I was at a parade in Long Grove for their Strawberry fest. Down the road came the color guard. Two people removed their hats as the colors passed. Me, and and old timer wearin a shirt, and hat that said"gimme that old time religion".
Patriotism makes for strange bed fellows. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

I don't think you can have a politician who is normal. A normal person who doesn't have some sort of personality disorder wouldn't be attracted to the job. By the time you get to the president you weed out people who are sane. Same thing with entertainers. To get to the top you almost have to have something wrong with you mentally.

The name of the movie escapes me, but there was a rebuttal to Farenhiet 911 that interviewed many of the people in the film who were completely taken out of context. They felt, and stated so in this film, that there words were twisted and edited to suport his views. It also debunked an article from a Bloomington Il paper as well as the entire school book reading episode when The President was told of the attacks. it is a short film, a little more than an hour, but i suggest you give it equal time. I did. I watched both and took them for what they are worth. But, there is definately proof, that he was deceptive to give the appearence of opinions and situations that were not true.

Hope that answers your question.

Andy, before you make yourself to look any more like a child going "nah nah" You should at least read some of the points or see the other film. I did. It will explain to you what was done and what is fact, including explanations from the people themselves who were edited to make the appearence of something else. But to sit hear and say why is this one not a lie, is not a valid adult argument. I offered you documented proof that you asked for and you took no time to explore it with an open mind. If i wanted to debate with people who just repeat their statement louder, i could go find any left wing liberal to do that.

The myth exists ( for those fooled ) because the media constantly
bombards the weak minded with how smart actors are, how hard
they work, how informed they are, bla-bla-bla. These actors
hear it ( and spout it ) over and over so much thay they now
believe it and go out amongst the world to proclaim their

The media bombards us with Hollywood blather because it's easier than reporting the hard news. AND, the average American EATS IT UP. Anna-Nicole, Paris, (any pair of boobs really*), Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Sean Penn--the list and the constant coverage goes on and on. It's easier than reporting the hard news, we eat it up like good consumers, and the ratings go off the charts. It's our fault because they only give us what we want! Perhaps if more of us did the same, they might just get the

You are a victim of "managed care." The HMO's job is to manage the amount of expenditure per patient in order to maximize profit. That's just Business 101, of course, except in this case people are allowed to die in order to control cost.

Furthermore, no matter how hard the comman man and woman works in their daily life, the cabal in Washington only rarely has the comman man in mind when they're "legislating." I think that's where Michael Moore is coming from. He knows that the government rarely works for the good of the people and that it is almost exclusively beholden to corporate lobbys and the very powerful trial lawyer lobby.

Bill I don't agree with you on MM. He is comming down on Health care not the Gov't as you stated.

Yes, but the government (Congress) has climbed into bed with the HMO industry (among others) and it's the rest of us who lose. I'll bet a buck that MM points out the HMO-government coziness in the movie. When they start slapping each other on the back it's the rest of us who are getting f____d.

The reason the Gov't got involved is because of the increased cost BS that we put the private sector thru. I WANT, I WANT, I WANT, we are still abunch of spoiled brats!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

WOW, What a discussion! My wife and I are going through some things rite now because our son just graduated college and is going on my Cobra plan, but has to get his own ins. down the road. His problem is he had a heart transplant in 1998 and may be hard to insure. The University of Penn. is working with us on this matter as we speak. So for now we are doing good. Thank the Lord!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
