Non-original colors?

A buddy and I were talking about the "good ol' days" the other night at a cruise night and how we would paint a car whatever color we wanted and would add options that we thought the car should have to be cool. Every car was "personalized"! Now, we all strive for these cookie cutter restos and God forbid we change the color from that hideous (stick in any factory color that you don't like).

So, I am really thinking about doing this with a '67 Z body that I have been offered for a good price. Anyone else do or consider doing something as sacriligeous???

Here's my $.02 on the matter;

Are you building the car for yourself, or someone else? If you're building it for yourself, I say build it how you want to build it. If you're building it for someone else, or strictly to re-sell, then original is probably better.

Case in point with my Chevelle; granted, it's nowhere near the status of a `67 Z28, but it's still a fairly valuable car. However, since it's no longer a matching #'s car and I have absolutely no intentions of ever selling this one, I'm building it the way I want to, which includes a color change from what's on the trim tag. Common sense dictates that I'm not going to do anything to the car that's irreversible, but it's not going back 100% stock either.

I agree with Eric 100%. If it is intended to be your car, build it your way. People have been modifying their cars ever since there have been cars. If the car is not an investment piece, I don't see anything wrong with deviating from the trim tag.

Just be prepared to keep the hood shut or deal with rows of people that just can't wait to tell you what is "wrong" with your car.

Yes, we molested all the virgins to the point where today we all crave the precious few remaining virgins. Nobody wants the girl who's been man-handled. (How's that for an analogy.) I say do what you want to and tell the trim-tag sleuths to go pester someone else.

Mark, I will be sending you some updated pics soon. Unfortunately, right now I am in the middle of a concours restoration of a Bobcat/skidsteer trailer. It is not all original, numbers matching drivetrain, but I was able to source some NOS parts to make it whole again. The trim tag calls for semi-gloss black, but I am going with more of a satin black. Thank God for eBay, where else would I have found an original master cylinder for the surge brakes?
