Finally got the engine wrapped up and on the dyno, made the last pull wednesday morning.

http://www.yenko.net/attachments/275926-A_33_dyno.jpg

I'll have the dyno sheets sometime next week, and I'll have all the info condensed and on my webpage a.s.a.p. There is some very useful info to be shared which I think you should find quite interesting, if not surprising.

Oh, btw...I HAD a video of the engine making a pull on the dyno, but for some mysterious reason, my piece of ^&$^#&*@*@^&^$%& Sony camcorder deleted it while I was loading it onto my computer. To say I was furious would be a bit of an understatement. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

More later.

Why, I did, of course...both of them. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I started with a "correct" `67 L78 carb (LIST 3910) to start, then switched to a `67 L88 Corvette carb (LIST 3418).

Psssst, your headers are on backwards! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Can't wait to see the dyno results. That suks losing the video of it though.

Eric, Cool!

BTW...check your computer over again. I had the same thing happen with my Sony camcorder...where it said it deleted the video...but I found it by searching the newest added files first... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

Dan;

Thanks. As soon as I get the results sorted out and posted on my site I'll post it in this thread. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Jeff;

Ssssshhh....that's a speed secret http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Bruce;

No luck...it's gone on into that great video file in the (cyber)sky. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Just a brief gloss-over on the engine--it was built to resemble a stock L78/LS6 in appearance. It does have an aftermarket rotating assembly, but the only non-OEM parts in it that can be considered "power producers" are the longer stroke (4.25") and a surprisingly docile solid lifter cam. The heads have absolutely NO portwork or any other "tricks" done to them, and even still retain their measley 1.72" exhaust valves. The intake is a stock 163 provided by none other than our own WILMASBOYL78, and the only thing it's had done was milling out the plenum divider. The rest of the engine is painfully stock.

You'll just have to wait `till next week for the rest.

Oh, one last thing; they dyno facility I use is equipped with an older Heenan & Froude dyno that is very, very conservative, or in the owners own words, "stingy"...which is just the way I like it. As such, don't expect to see some bogus, fluffed-up "west coast magazine"-type dyno numbers from anything I build & dyno. These are honest, real-world numbers.

I'm still waiting on my dyno sheets. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I'm told I should have them in a day or two.

Are they still using those slow old dot-matrix printers?...

VintageMusclecar

This dyno doesn't have the modern software that spits out a nice tidy dyno sheet with all the amth already done for you, much of it (like brake specific fuel consumption numbers) has to be calculated seperately, which is then written down by hand. Not exactly convenient, but it works.

I'm getting impatient too! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Surprising how much the little things many people take for granted can affect output, isn't it?

There's still more in store for it too. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

The engine will be going into my `67 Chevelle SS396 (http://www.vintagemusclecarparts.com/Chevelle_1.html) project, which is currently in limbo while I try to locate a rotisserie to borrow/rent.

Dave;

Thanks. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Compared to building engines and trying to get this car restoration completed, the carb restorations are the easy part! lol!

Excellent write-up and presentation. My hat's off to you. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Stop the presses!

The 496 dyno video has been rescued!!! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

(long story, don't ask how/where it was hiding, you wouldn't believe me if I told you)

If you'd like to see the clip, click here (http://www.vintagemusclecarparts.com/496_Project_9.html). The link is at the bottom of the page.

(this was one of the early pulls before we got everything sorted out)

Eric

p.s.

I'll have another dyno video hosted on my website in the next day or so; I didn't have anything to do with this particular build, but the engine is so insanely cool I had to capture it on video. What is it?....well, I really don't wanna let the cat outt'a the bag just yet, but I will say that it'll knock your "SOHC"s off! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The factory stuff is very good on the 496. I had cast iron Square ports on my nova with the ls6 style intake and it made 490 to the tires. Switched over to brodix heads and a air gap and only picked up 40 rwhp but 80 lbft torque. Very nice write up.

Chris;

Thanks. I'll be adding quite a bit more info on my website on the Chevelle build as soon as I get caught up on my carb work and have some time to work on the Chevelle again. I have the new oil pan in now, but I haven't even had time to install it yet. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif As soon as that's wrapped up, the engine & trans go in. The dash & wiring will be next on the "to do" list.

Jeff;

Thanks. I've only scratched the surface on this build in regards to what these factory parts are capable of. There's still significant power left waiting on the table, but we'll get to some of that when the project enters the 2nd phase of its build. Along those lines, I'm not taking this build to the "extremes" as I've done in the past; this is all about showcasing how well these factory parts can work with only minor modifications when the overall combination is dialed in.

Very nice write-up, Eric. Interesting that "Ohio George" did the dyno runs. His shop did a rebuild on my 69 COPO Camaro's motor back in 1977 and they are still at 716 Brantly Ave in Dayton, OH http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif!
