Guys , this is for any GTO guy's out there , but I'm just curious on what they think of this car. I bought it a year ago I'm trying to get a good idea of what a frame off GTO conv would be worth in order to decide to do it ( my choice), leave it as is or just do a re-paint.This car is the most highly loaded 68 car I've ever seen. When the guy told me the options in it , I thought he was full of Sh-t and maybe added them himself. He was the 3rd owner and had the car since 1992. So here goes, this is what the car has. It's an 85,000 orig mile GTO Convertible, orig Veradaro green, now Meridian Turquoise was repainted in 92.The car has a 400 ci , 350 hp , turbo Hydromatic, bucket seat , console ,rally guage cluster his and hers shifter,Air cond, AM-FM stereo,Tilt steering, Cruise control, Power steering, power brakes, power top , power rear antenna, soft ray glass, and several other misc options. I got the PHS on the car, and this is exactly how it was ordered!!Needless to say we , we worked out a deal last year and I picked up the car. The car still has it's orig engine, tranny and rear end. No Rust, the frame looks real good, no hit, however the rear qtrs are defenitely in need of work , look like it was sanded with a broom, and a few bubbles popped up on the hood. Trunk needs a new pan too, but that typical for convertibles. Anyhow my questions would be , have you ever heard of another car with this many options on it ? This GTO listed out at $4653.34 in Dec of 1967. The car currently has an elderbrock carb on it and a new hood tach, but I have the originals. Assuming frame off cost of $30,-$40,000 as I'm assuming everything is there , and just to repaint on the frame at $7,500- $12,000 can a car like this command a premium price? You seem to be able to find GTO converts out there for +/- $30-$40,000 US all day long, but I'm thinking this is a little different. I'm mostly a Chevelle guy at heart , and I've delayed restoring this car as till likely next year or even 2 yrs from now. Any thoughts on where the value is ? I'll send pics to anyone that knows how to post them if they'd like to see it. Thx Bob

Restored for yourself......great
Restore for a profit......doubtful
A few items will keep the price down.
Color, automatic, non-ram air.
Don't get me wrong, sounds like a great car, but you asked about potential value
Just my $.02
John
Ps if you do paint, i would go with the correct color since the car has its orginal motor and some good options. And yes i know of a few cars out there with this many options.

Bob, IMO, and it is just that, a frame off on that car and in the current market will bring between $35k-$45k. It has a nice option list, color and auto trans hurts the value to some degree.
The '68's are not as popular as other years and the selling prices reflect this. I'm sure if you were to wait for the 'right' buyer, you could get more money for it...and don't get me wrong, I like these car alot, the market for these cars has never been that great.
For a comparison, here's a link to my '68...one repaint in the 70's and I can probably get $32k for it as it sits.

I concur. I think you'd be lucky to break even unless you did most of the work yourself.
Good luck,
Scott

And last ones. Bob also forwarded this info.
Here's a few more pics. Looking at the pic's again, I've picked up some NOS
wheel well trim and also the big red wire on the battery is for the $5,000
stereo in the car. The rear panels were cut up to put the speakers in but
those are easy to find. I can ad some more pics tonight of the PHS doc's
too, I just can't find them right now.

after seeing the pics, i would leave it as is and maybe detail and correct small stuff as you go. Looks pretty good as it sits.
John
Mike, really nice looking car!! and a 4 spd too!

I agree with John, fix/detail the small stuff and enjoy driving it with the top down...http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
BTW, I had a '68 hardtop that color in the early 90's...that's my favorite color for a '68.
John, thanks for the compliment, it sure is a fun car here in Fl. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Wow! You learn something every day, I figured the '68's would bring more money than later years - no basis for that opinion, just a carryover from the Nova world. I think that car would be a lot of fun just the way it sits - including the stereo to overpower the wind noise http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

That color looks great on a convert. Nice car. Just get rid of the 400-4v decal in the air cleaner. That's just like having a "Caution Fan" sticker on a fan shroud in a Camaro.

You'll find that same trend in Chevelles as well. 68 Chevelles are definitely less sought-after than the 69 and 70 models.

Thx guys , In all honesty , that's exactly what I thought , You really can't afford to do a GTO frame off unless it's for yourself and you don't care or you can do it yourself!! I love the cars, but as you can see it's a pretty good driver as is and looking at that Varedaro Green car,... that's absolutely goregeous,... and it's only a $35 -$40 US car and hard to move ????I kinda knew the answer before I asked it but I thought maybe I was wrong, Thx again guys. I', just gonna leave it as is and enjoy it. Bob
