Here are some pic's of Gibb Nova #21 as it arrived in Iowa from KC and racing at Eddyville Ia(circa 1974-ish). I'm told it had an L88 and was the baddest ride in Moultin Ia.
Pic's are courtesy of Ked Wood. one of it's past owners. Thanks to Ken and Kim Howie for supplying some owner hist & ph #'s http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/youguysrock.gif

How long do you think any of these cars stayed stock! The first thing whe did was pull the stock parts off and go racing. I was never a big fan of the Nova, the 69 camaro was the best looking car Chevrolet ever made. I would leave it as a race car,who cares if its numbers matching.

NovaMob03
07-17-2007, 01:44 AM
It dosen't look like this anymore. It had about 12 owners in Iowa & was stripped & repainted Maroon in 1985(I think). The 1/4's were replaced too. Now it's 75-80% restored back to original. If it were still day2 I'd leave it that way, but I'm inclined to go back original. The Grecian Green paint has already been mixed to match Annies Nova.

Not likely that will happen any day soon if I can help it. I talked her out of selling it before as it is the last thing she and Dennis did together and it is more than just a collector car to her. I hope she keeps it a very long time.

Actually after talking to her tonight she thought it would be pretty cool to put vinyl race decals, headers, mags and drag tires on it as it was back in '68 for one show just to be different. A couple of hours and it would be back to stock again.

I kinda go to the pics that Verne posted of York. All very cool, but a lot of them done in the nostalgia "back in the day" race car look. If this car had no race history, I'd say GG dog dishes, off the show room look. But this is the cars history/life. To put it back, would be somewhat like putting the Vitar copo, or Herbie's hugger, or the Ray Allen chevelle back to show room stock. A cars history, is like the story of your life. While a baby's born with a clean slate, he/ she are what they are in life by what they do. If he grows up to be a Hells Angel, you don't dress him up in a suit when he dies, and say "what a nice life he lived". In my old perverted logic, that's how I see these cars. Especially when there's documented evidence , and people alive to tell it's story. These cars say, "Iam, what I am". Tell my story. JMHO http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I'm with Marlin, those original pics are scary. The Funny Car tires make it look like a caricature.

How about restore it to stock and do up a die-cast in its Day II form to place on the dash. Best of both worlds?

I'm into the restored race cars, too. And if this thing was time-capsuled like that MAYBE I'd be tempted to leave it, but no way could I restore it to that look.

I think you'd want to leave the wheelwells stock, and back space the cragers so you could get about a 8.5 slick in the stock opening. The colors appear a little washed out in the pictures. I'm thinkin you lighten the darkbrwn/burgandy to a lighter burgundy, and accent the panels with a pinstripe outline, maybe even fuzz shadowing the inside panel. I guess maybe you had to live in the times this kinda thing was popular to like it. It was an extension of the psychedelic drug infested, alcohol abuse, wild sex, acid rock era. An extended middle finger to conformity, followed by a "if you don't like it, fu k off dude". Some of us just have never gotten past that. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sammy, that from an old Atlanta rhythm section tune. It never was a hit, but I always liked it.
Rick, I liked ole Charley until he moved way right.(Not that he didn't start there). He did a great deal to bring southern fried rock to the front of rock, and country crossover.A great performer, and musician. He just kinda lost me on his message.

Now Sammy, next time you hear a good ole tune, or crank up the Z, you tell me if that doesn't make you a little homesick for 1969 too. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

tom406

"Homesick" is on Atlanta Rhythm Sections's album "Quinella" which came out in '81 or so. It got pretty regular airplay in Minneapolis on the AOR/classic rock stations throughout the '80s. Its one of their harder rocking tunes. Kind of an anomoly, like Bread's "Mother Freedom" (one of my favorite harder rock guitar songs, by a predominantly soft-rockin' band).

Amen to the Charlie Daniels' comment. How did a guy who wrote "Long Haired Country Boy" and the southern hippie anthem "Uneasy Rider" evolve into a fairly obstinate right wing reactionary?

The cool thing about some race cars is that they have an evolutionary history, and you can pick the era you like best, or perhaps mix and match some elements from different eras.

Maybe this Nova didn't turn into a clown car until "Day 13", maybe it was tastefully campaigned for a time ala copo-2's pic. I could see doing it up with period bolt-ons and Cragars.

Tom, you're right about it's day1 history. Orig owner, Jim L. raced it at KC drag strip & street raced it in Grecian Green, then sold it with only 1500 miles. I believe it was the 2nd owner, who I've not spoken to, that day2'd it the way it is shown here.
I'm told that when Jim was on leave from Nam he decided to drive from KC to Laharpe to buy the Nova. When he got there, the dealership was closed, so he called Fred at home to see if he would reopen to sell him the Nova. Fred did so, Jim bought it & drove it home. Only a few of the 50 Novas' were actually sold at the Gibb dealership. BTW Wayne Elston, now deceased, filled out the Gibb delivery inspection sheet...he did many of the ZL1 inspections as well.
This Nova either came close to setting the Eddyville track record, or did set it(can't get my hands on actual doc's) & I'm told that other Muscle used to come to Moulton from Cedar Rapids to see if they could beat it. Not bad for the $1000 that the 3rd owner paid for it...with this paint sceme & the L88. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

I realize that all 50 Nova's 1st went to LaHarpe, and the registry shows that 30 of the 50 were sold there ( I consider that a few). That leaves 20 sold though Fred's dealer network....Courtesy, Bill Allen,Riley, Branine, Rod Smith,Bomier,Knowles,Harvey May. You've always known more about these Nova's than me, so am I wrong? The 2 that I owned, sold at Gibb, had the delivery inspection. The other 2 sold from Courtesy did not.
I spoke with Jim L today and asked how he had it set up. Minor mod's like headers, T bars & he rolled the fenders for slicks. Unfortunately, he can't find any pics http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Jude 10 to 15 went to Harrell to be conv. or tuned. Those are the cars that went to other dealers. Very few stock ones were sold by other dealers. Ray, is that a picture of your car, or, if not, whose.
The argument on stock/factory depends a little on if you lived in the time of these cars, or not. Some also depends on what one feels will bring the most value at sale time. I think most of us, as mr. Ray, is that a picture of your car, or, if not, whose.
The argument on stock/factory depends a little on if you lived in the time of these cars, or not. Some also depends on what one feels will bring the most value at sale time. I think most of us, as mr. Ken,

Yes, that is a picture of my car taken probably in 1971? This is the same se-up, but in color. You have probably seen this picture before?

As far as the issue of stock appearing or race, personally I have feeling both ways. The way it is now, is the way I drove it home from K.C., but as you mention, it wasn't long before it had a pair of slicks and competing on the strip.

I like Ray's car with the Cragars. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif We have them on our Chevelle. Every time I think about putting the original style SS wheels back on the car, I change my mind. Day two and Cragars go hand in hand.....along with headers and a Hurst shifter. I really haven't changed much in the last 40 years. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif
What's this hippy thing. None of the car guys I knew were into the hippy fad. There was one local long haired guy that bought a Shelby Mustand in about 1969-1970. He litterally destroyed the car in one summer. They were a totally different breed and we didn't seem to cross paths at all. Grass, for us, was something you walked on. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sammy, most of those damn hippies were goin to Canada to get outta the draft. Cold was better than Vietnam. I remember how Ford most likly lost the election by pardoning the draft restisters/dodgers (depending on how you saw it), and then almost none of them came back.
Keith, your kinda right, although the term hippie was/is used a lot like the word liberal, homo, fag, the N word. Most of the time around here, even if you were part of the Sunday choir, only cut grass, and never smoked it,but your hair was a little longer that conformed to community standards, you were a fu kin hippie.

Speaking of Tricky Dick, I saw a bumper sticker the other day on the back of an otherwise immaculate Acura sedan with a gray haired boomer driving. It said "I never thought I'd miss Nixon".

On that note, its too bad Al Gore didn't use the heretofore undiscovered power of the Vice Presidency to help 'ol Bill. Apparently, the Vice Presidency has broad powers and reach, and isn't really accountable to any branch of the federal government. Poor Al, he could have had this whole global warming thing licked if only he had the initiative of Mr. Cheney (Tricky Dick, Mk II).

Back now to Novas with excessively large tires.....

Well, Jude has pretty much decided to stay pretty much stock. That's fine. It'll be pretty cool that way too.It would be interesting to see if the 1st owner had pics of it racing before it had the color change.

Dear Mr. Howie, you cannot get into Republican heaven, if you can't spell Nixon (Nixson) correctly. You're lucky he's dead, or he'd probably have your phone tapped, and have you on his undesirable persons list. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
As for the draft. The army, and marines were unable to fill their quotas big time last month. They are now taking the kind of people that they had wanted to stay away from with the volunteer army as they've had to lower their requirements.
Your friends the neocons want to bomb Iran
Musharif is about to be overthrow in a nuclear armed Pakistan.(big nightmare)
And the bulk of the United States army is bogged down in Iraq.
Nevermind all the stuff going on in Africa from Somolia, to the oil fields of Niger., And the hell with Darfur, there ain't no oil there.
The eggs are in one basket, and they're in Iraq.
If things go from bad to worse, they may have no choice. Besides, they been usin the back door draft on the guard, and reserve guys for the last 2 years.
And it was Ford who allowed the dodgers who went to Canada to come home (amnesty) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

Mr Rich, and Mr. Libby should both be in jail Sometimes, be you Democrat, or Republican, you can't cure stupid.
Come on guys, You can't claim the moral high ground for the GOP anymore. That ballon just ain't flyin. Ole Bill was stupid, but he didn't run on a family values platform like the estemed senator from La, then get caught up in an escort scandal.People with bad sexual mores come in all party affiliations, and religions. Some get caught, some don't.

And at the end of the day, when you're sittin in that big ole chair with that man with a very stern face lookin down at you, readin from the book of your life, he ain't gonna care if you were president, or ditch digger when he passes that judgement on your a$$. So throw all those stones at slick Willie you want, Cause someday we're all gonna get to set in that big ole chair. And he don't give no pardons.

Seems any time a car surfaces that is in race/day 2 trim, such as Jude's Gibb Nova, a discussion begins as per how to restore. Always a very spirited debate. I for one always vote for dragcar/day 2, but I do see the other side.

IMO, it is about value. A lot of the old racecars began life as pretty rare cars, thus in original condition hold alot of value. Though most ZL-1 went racing, their value seems to be in original condition. The exception may be ZL-1 #1, but as neat as the history of that car is, and no doubt very valuable, it would set records if sold restored back to original condition.

Of course there are the obvious exceptions, Gumpy's cars, Sox/Martin, Arnie, etc.

I think part of it has to do with the fact that most folks enjoy seeing the old racecars the way they were raced, but do not want the burden of showing one. Unlike cars restored back to original, which are relative easy to show and enjoy, a racecar can be a PITA.

Will be interesting to watch how a well known '67 Z28 will do at auction this fall at Mecum, the Fred Gibb car known as Lil Hoss. As it sits today, a couple of collectors have told me they value it at somwhere between $100-150,000.00, not a lot more then a nice '67 Z.

For SCR1, CLiff Ernst did this to one of his Yenko Camaros. All of the decals were magnetic, so the only parts requiring much effort were the hood and tunnel ram. Would be wild if one year for the SCR we all did this, with supercar logos, pet names, racing decals, day two/race parts installed...

I know we're in. After all that is where most of these cars got their start. It would be wild (and also a nice change) to see a bunch of these cars dressed up in Day II or race trim. For the most part it would be the addition of wheels, tires, headers, air cleaner, tach and some decals and would require little more than a days effort. Just look at Ray's car for an example, great to see it in it's glory. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

I certainly can't take any credit for this Gibb Nova or it's neat history, but it seems to have it all. Bought in LaHarpe. Has orig doc's. Raced in KC, by the orig owner, in the orig color with minor mods. Raced day2 in KC & Ia with an L88 & a screamin' 70's period paint job. The orig owner is still around to talk about it, as are several Iowa owners. I wish I was in a position to take it to SCR...maybe next yr, if I still have it.
