Charcoal canisters didn't come out til 70.
In 68 & 69, CA was the same as the other 49 states.

Kurt, Have a L78 open element air cleaner. has 3 holes in the bottom, one is the pipe for the valve cover and the others have a factory plug in them...could it be because this was the same base as a corvette and the corvettes had the smog connected to the pipe on the bottom of the air cleaner???

I also have one of those bases and I was told this was the last base that gm offered before they were discontinued.

Car was built 5/69 and the ac lid has silk screen bottom. Im sure its the original for the car. Maybe this was considered late production for that AC.

For what it's worth, our COPO Chevelle was built the last week of July. it had the smog pump, retarded timing and leaned out carb. #68 primary jets and #76 secondaries. There was a definite lean surge at 60 mph and performance was pretty bad. The breather base was the same as that on our February L78 car. Just the curved tube for the pcv system to the valve cover.
