SANDLIN LUMBER / SEMA **Open House**

I'll be hosting our 4th annual SEMA week open-house/party for charity at my warehouse facility adjacent to my lumber yard in LV on October 31, 3:00 - 9:00 PM. Admission includes catered hot finger foods and your beverage of choice "open bar" [water, sodas, beer & wine...no hard licquor]. Admission and hotel accommodation for Oct 31, 2007, is complimentary to people that bring a car for display. The benefactor for 100% of the event collection/proceeds is the LV Church of the Nazarene~Camp-For-Kids fund that Beth and I founded. This past summer, 16 less fortunate kids got to attend church camp for a week as a result of last year's event collections. The general theme associated with SEMA attracts a lot of the Pro-Touring type enthusiasts, so in years past...I've worked closely with the www.Lateral-g.net (http://www.Lateral-g.net) forum members to spread the word and assist with door prizes and auction items. Bob McClurg, The SPEED Channel, V8TV and a couple other magazine photographers attended the last 2-3 events, so there's usually some good press coverage downstream of the event. I try to display 30-35 cars inside my warehouse facility for the event and I'd like to think it's a good opportunity for an "sYc-West" car corral type gathering. You eastern & midwestern guys have VetteFest, the York US-30 show, the Gibb show and the sYc Reunion, but us guys out west like to party once in a while too. Even if we could only start with 10-12 Supercars this time...it could turn into something bigger with more warning/awareness next year.

General admission is $20 each at the door to attend the catered open house and car display. I will be displaying 3-4 of my Supercars and my ProMod '68 Camaro along with 6-8 of my street rods. I have commitments from Joe Barr to bring his 70 Yenko Deuce, Bob Gagliano to bring his 69 COPO Chevelle, Tom Clary to bring his 69 Yenko Nova and his 69 Yenko Camaro, Charley Lillard to bring his 55 Chevy-fighter plane while Brian Henderson and Marlin Spotts try to figure out how to get a kitchen pass for a couple nites in Las Vegas.

In addition to SEMA, there's some awfully good racing going on during SEMA week at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. I will be running my 68 Camaro in the Street Car Super Nationals, Pro Street class:

BTW...I was able to reserve rooms at The Palms hotel/casino for Clary, Barr and Chlupsa, so if anyone has difficulty finding a hotel room during SEMA week...check there. It's a fairly new joint on Flamingo Rd, a couple blocks west of the strip where all the "stars" stay when visiting LV.

As of today, the RSVP guest list is approaching 300, so our $6,000 pledge to the Las Vegas Church of the Nazarene**Camp-For-Kids**charity drive will be met. Included in each guest's $20 donation at the door will be complimentary hot/cold sandwiches and finger foods, wine, beer and soft drinks. Several SEMA Show exhibitors and vendors have donated dozens and dozens of very cool door prizes to be given out via blind drawing over the course of the 6 hour open house.

Bench racing, putting lessons and blackjack seminar by Charley Lillard and Ken Tibor in the dimly lighted parking lot remains free of charge. There will be a couple cable TV crews and magazine photographers attending with cameras in-hand, so everyone is asked to wear a clean shirt.

Lillard's 55 Chevy-P51 Mustang ProStreet contraption, powered by a Rolls Royce V12, showed up yesterday for the open house car display. 7,000 pounds of craziness. It truly is amazing to see this car up close and marvel at all the custom paint, body, chassis and drivetrain modifications involved here. I walked around it for an hour and don't feel like I saw all the particulars. I counted at least 2 radiators, 5 oil coolers, 12 spark plug wires, 12 exhaust tips and 47 toggle switches and gauges. THANKS to everyone that attended and donated to the Camp-For-Kids charity event. We collected $5,200 at the door, plus $900 that had been mailed in earler bringing the total donation over $6,000. That'll send 25 kids to summer church camp that otherwise couldn't afford to go.

Well, what a way to close the month of October, Sandlin Open House was over the top. Got to meet some old friends and make new ones. One of my highlights was my brother in law from Illinois got to attend and while moving cars into the open house area he commented on how thankful he was he got to attend and that how it ranked up with when he got married and watching his kids being born. A Dodge flatbed w/cattle trailer ran off the road &amp; hit our big trailer a couple years ago while it was parked in front of our shop...well, as they were fixing the body, we told them to totally redo the brakes on all the axles, new everything...this was a big name trailer place over in Springfield, so we *assumed* they'd have a handle on things. But ever since then, we've done nothing but fight the brakes on this trailer...fast forward to last week. Trailer is loaded, but we have a brake grabbing...I pull the wheel/hub, back off that wheel, make sure everything seems hunky-dorry, and take our electric grease gun to every axle. Welp, he calls from Texas and he's lost a tire on the trailer, but the spare is good, so they keep rolling...get to Vegas, the brake is back to dragging. Steve's guys pull the wheels/drums, we have a cracked drum &amp; all of the grease is gone out of the bearings...seems the trailer place installed the wrong axle seals so all the grease left on the trip to Vegas...also, a couple of the other trailer tires had started seperating. So, 6 new trailer tires, new shoes, bearings, seals, a brake drum, and a whole lotta labor from Steve's crew, and it was time for the return trip! Coulda been baaaaad....
