OK,
I finally found a great pair of original day 2 traction bars
with the long backs for that day-2 look I'm after for another
project. I have two fast questions and hope someone can
help. What is the correct yellow color? These were painted
red way-back-when. Where can I get original style J-bolts
and nuts? Mine are missing. Are they still available?
Anybody got an old set of J-bolts just lying around and in
dire need of a home? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I had the J bolts made at a heavy truck suspension shop and they were much cheaper and better materials than summit etc.

I call it "obnoxious yellow"...I will check to see what yellow we used to repaint the Lakewoods on our 70 black car..

I picked these Lakewoods (for a GM A body) up awhile ago, and they appear to have the original paint still on them. This'll give you an idea ....

Very nice Lakewoods on the Nova. I have been looking for a set for years in with the early square bar not the later rectangular set up.

Bill & Tom,
Am I to assume that the square tube Lakewood traction bars
are the original ( back in the day ) style? Frankly, I didn't
know there was any difference.

I know this is an old thread but I picked up a set of vintage NOS Lakewood bars and thought it may be helpful to see the correct colors of components and the instructions.

Darren,
This was not meant to be a for sale ad. The reason I originally took the pictures is because the bars are scheduled to start tonight on EvilBay. I posted the picture here bacause I remembered this thread about the correct color of the bars and original unused pieces are probably the best we have to verify correctness.
I have posted informative pictures before and have sold the parts to members only to have other members upset that they did not have a shot at the part.
Again, I hope this post does not read as a for sale ad as that was not my intention. If any moderators view this as an ad please feel free to remove it.

Jason, can you post a picture of the bars with the interior sides showing? I think way you have them now shows the sides that face out when mounted? There is some debate as to which direction the Traction Action... stickers face on the interior sides. Thanks!

It's interesting that the box and instructions show the bracket on the tail but the traction bars don't have it...perhaps they made two styles at the same time or they used some left over boxes when they did the design change?

Jeff,
There are no stickers on the insides. Here is a picture:

I thought that was interesting too. Maybe some models came that way and some didn't since the box is generic to all bars?

The bar they are selling is different than the early bar in the ad they show. Notice how the bar extends behind the axle on the early bar but not on the newer version they are selling?

What is the date cut off between the square tube and rectangle tube?
the Mr Gasket Div of W R Grace stamp on the box of these bars dates them between 1972 and 1981
from what I read, Mr Gasket and Lakewood was owned by W R Grace 1972 to 81.
Then Joe Hrudka "Mr Gasket" bought back the names and a bunch of others in the 1980s and sold them again in the 1990s

That is what my catalogs show. Also never remember the bars having the logo's on both sides. All the original bars I had or redone had the decals/stickers only on one side. Dave Miller will probably know for sure.

Thanks Joe,
I wonder why the application for Nova only shows to 69 if they were made later.

Sam, I'm thinking they came out in very late 1970 in a press photo. I have somewhere a 1971 ad showing them, can't remember the month off hand and I have never seen the decals on both sides either on NOS or used ones I have seen on real life. Not to say it was never done.

Concerning the sticker facing out, it looks like the sticker is on the shock side of the traction bar, but if you would happen to re-locate your shocks inboard (which is very popular to do on '67-69 Camaros) you need to swap the Traction Bars from side to side which puts the stickers to the inside then.
