Yesterday two guys from our local Camaro club were involved in a horrific crash on 95. A concrete truck cut them off and they had to hit the breaks hard. The 69 SS/RS L35 Camaro was rearended as you can see in the picture. They both went to the hospital. One was discharged however the other is still at the hospital with complications that could result in him not being able to move from the waist down. Please keep them both in your thoughts and prayers and lets hope there are no long term lasting effects.

Very sad and we hope the outcome of their injuries prove to not be that bad. I sincerely hope that someone stopped the concrete truck or got a license number though in reality he would likely get off anyway. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

There were 5 vehicles involved and yes, the concrete truck took off. Police are investigating and have some good leads.

Is this Joes car? Looks like it was a very nice car and based on the photos on your site, he was not afraid to drive or race it. What a shame.

Received the following from Bud S at the American Camaro Assoc...........
"Joe Sporney is a member of the Maryland Camaro Club and is in charge of the Heartbeat Judging at the Camaro Nationals. He owns several Camaros and just loves his cars. I'm sure you have seen him at the Nationals and other Camaro show.
The pictures tell most of the story. This happen yesterday 8/31 around noon time.
Our prayers and thoughts go out to both Joe and John and their families. God Bless.

Joe's best friend John Banskiver was following Joe when this accident occurred and was the injured party in the attached story. He is in Shock Trauma with major injuries. Joe suffered head trauma and course the trauma of losing his prized 1969 RS/SS big block. John's 1968 Ford Mustang was also destroyed. Updates to follow.
Spoke to Joe last night. He was pretty banged up and bruised (now wearing a neck brace) but no internal injuries. He's at home resting. It seems a concrete truck (which left the scene) was the cause of this horrible accident, swerving in front of Joe, causing him to hit the brakes hard, then being hit from behind by the U-Haul truck. Correction: Joe's friend John was driving his pickup not the '68 Mustang. On a sad note, John may be paralyzed from the waist down.

Did anybody notice when the picture pans out on the second link that a really big truck and trailer is sliding sideways towards the cars that are stopped?

That semi-truck was turning around I think. Not sliding towards the accident.

I spoke to Joe yesterday. He is a little sore and banged up, but otherwise OK. His main concern is for John. I have a few more details of how John was involved in the accident. John was following Joe in his pickup truck. They were going to John’s house to put a transmission in Joe’s Camaro. The U-haul had gotten between them as they were traveling in the far right lane. When Joe was cut of by the cement truck and locked up his brakes and was rear ended by the U- Haul, John slowed and went into the next lane left. When John did this he was rear ended by a semi that was traveling at a high rate of speed. The impact broke John’s back and he was pushed down the highway away from where Joe and the U-haul were and came to rest along the guardrail. About 15 min. after the accident and the fire dept. had put out the fires of the Camaro and U-Haul Joe realized John was not around. He knew John would not leave him and started shouting to the rescue personnel to find John. It took him a couple of minutes to convince them he was not just in shock, and a state trooper found John in his truck a few hundred yards ahead of the crash scene. John had been lapsing in and out of consciousness. At that point the paramedics secured John and medivaced him from the scene.
John is a car guy, one of us and lives alone, his wife passing several years ago. He is going to need all the help he can get. The members of the Maryland Camaro Club have set up a special fund to help benefit John in recovering from this terrible accident. We are going to take donations at our annual show this Sat. at Lincoln Tech in Columbia MD.
If anyone would care to donate, checks can be sent directly to our Treasurer, made out to The Maryland Camaro Club c/o
April Alderson
6506 Sunset Dr.
Eldersburg, MD. 21784
Just note that they are for the John Banskiver benefit fund.
Thanks
