This how all 67 Zs were done. About 60% had cowl air cleaners. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I always thought the cowl plenum ACs were dealer or owner add ons not factory options.

Cowl air cleaners as well as headers were offered as factory options on the 67 and 68 Z's. They were never installed at the factory but were shipped with the car in the trunk. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

The headers were never shipped in the trunk. That is just a car magazine perpetuated myth. They were over-the-counter parts that you had to purchase at the dealer parts department. The only time they came in the trunk was when you bought them at the parts counter and took them home. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

In 1967 they had four Z28 RPO codes. I also believe this was true for 68, but not 1969.
-Z28-1 Base package
-Z28-2 Cowl Plenum Included
-Z28-3 Headers Included
-Z28-4 Headers and cowl plenum Included
The headers and cowl plenum were in boxes in the trunk, with the other new car prep stuff, like antenna, hubcaps.
They could be installed at the dealer at extra cost or owner installed at home.

Charlie I think you're wrong about me saying that I'm right about paceme agreeing with me in the first place. I now disagree with anyone who would agree with me. Where's Abbott and Costello when you need them? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

A red 67 Z that myself and a friend had for a very short time had the cowl plenum on it and Zedder ended up with the car, dont remember if it had any paperwork, but another red 67 that we had that was in Hawaii for a whyle and was a Canada car with paper work and it was a cowl plenum and header car and had paperwork and im sure it showed the options and something about shipping.

To make it clear, the above statement is incorrect. See my above post. Headers and or cowl plenums could be ordered with the car. If I remember correctly the base z28-1 in 67 was $358 and the z28-4 was $800+, this was because headers and cowl plenum were included as delivered in the car.Of course you could also order them from the parts counter after the fact. What Kim's post stated was that 60% of the 67 z28were in fact ordered as z28-2's. I am not sure of the percentage, but know they could be ordered as an RPO. BTW, Charley was actually correct. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

Yes, the car sold to a fellow in CA. Hey Joel, I didn't know you were partners in the car with Mitch. That was a great car with a POP etc. I wish I still had that car. Say hi to Mitch for me! Paceme's correct and I have GM docs to prove it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

hey guys...thanks for the replies and all the info.....but....thats not the car I was referring to...I'll try and find a link...it was definitely in NY state...and the seller stated that it was a possible 67 Z...but then in a question from a potential buyer, the owner stated that it had the 4L cowl stamp...I'll see if I can locate it again...I believe it only bid to 1500 dollars when the auction ended... but thanks!!!

Will do.
Here you go. I asked about a trim tag photo and he said it was damaged and needed to be replaced?

Attached Oakland (CA) zone letter [page 5] dated 3-17-67 shows that four different levels of Z-28s are orderable. However, it notes that the cowl plenum aircleaner would not be available until approximately April 1 and the factory headers not available until approximately May 1.

Nice piece of documentation.

I know one parts guy, from back in the day who says that, he remembers the headers and cowl plenum were shipped to the dealer separate from the cars, at least on the Z28s which they ordered.
Does a box of headers, even fit in the trunk along with the factory spare? If I remember correct Milt Robson had a Z28 and the headers were loose, with a special bracket to hold them in place?
Same goes for the X-Ram set up.

I got my green Z from the original owner and it was a factory header and cowl plenum car (with docs). He also worked at the dealership. His was the only Z that the dealership got in '67. He told me the headers and cowl plenum came in the trunk. I got the box for the cowl plenum with the car and it had no address label for the dealership on it. I suspect the headers did not come in a box but may have had some wrap of some sort around them otherwise I probably would have gotten that box too. I also got the boxes for the rally wheel hubcaps as they [and the trim rings] had never been installed. If the headers were boxed, which I kind of doubt, they probably were put in the backseat. If you ordered a Z with cowl plenum or headers, bottomline it came with the car. Exceptions may have been if there was a shortage at the time of the car's build.
