Was browsing through some old photos I've gleaned over the years, thought some here might get a kick outta this.

p.s.
Notice the Alston Chassis billboard just beside the car. I'd say a phone call is in order. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Must be something to do with the flexxy frames under those cars.

This one is "Carolina Thunder" driven by Danny Goveia. Somewhere around a 500" 409 in a 62 bubble.

------Another reason for 5 point belts; You dont fall out the passenger door when launching!!!.......Bill S

I wonder how many times the passenger side door handle has been replaced from dragging on the starting line? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I figured it'd be a runner...just a white-knucklin' S.*.B. on the launch. I've had to wrestle a few ill-handling rides off the starting line, but those take the cake. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Still cool tho. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Any 10sec "X" frame car can be set up (mis-set-up)to do that on launch. IT's done on purpose for crowd appeal and appearance money. THose cars could be easily set up to run straight and level...and with better ETs.

They must have some etra extra long travel shocks on those things !!!

Maybe there's no shock at all!?!?!??!!? As I said, the suspensions on those cars are really screwed up.........intentionally!!!!
Once they finally get going, under power, god forbid anything gets sideways or breaks. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
Kind of like the early '70s when the wheel standers had those sparking skid plates and kept it on 2 wheels for the quarter. Great crowd appeal, but extremely dangerous. They had individual rear brake controls to "steer" the cars.

They still do the sparks Verne !!!

And it sure works - no ones in the bathroom or getting a drink when they run!

If anyone's interested, that white `67 Chevelle belongs to Robert Schmitt (sp?) of NY, and was the winner of the first Hot Rod Magazine "pump gas shootout" a few years ago. (http://www.compcams.com/Community/Events/2004PumpGasChallenge.asp)
Here is a more recent video (https://www.smugmug.com/photos/190076006-O.mpg) of the Chevelle in action (link courtesy of chevelles.com)
(notice the funky e.t....don't know what's up with that, but note the mph! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif )
