My opinion is that these cars need some rule changes to make them safer. There are more accidents, or near accidents then there were in the old days of front engine dragsters! I feel that there is a tremendous amount of responsibility on the track officials to "prep" the track properly to handle the power these cars are making. Something HAS to be done to ensure more of these cars make it all the way down the track without the typical lane-changing or flipping in the lights that they have a reputation for!!!!
If I was running that class, no matter how well I thought my car was dialed in or how sure I was about handling it, I"d be more worried about being wrecked by the car in the other lane than just beating him.......... And that's no way to go racing! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif

Kim,
I formed the opinion above after viewing the first video of the turbo-charged, nitrous 6sec cars.
I almost wonder if that racing class will draw spectators like NASCAR people who just go to see the crashes... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Most drivers of those cars were not brought up driving funny cars or fuel cars. These guys are pressing more buttons during the run to add another 500hp to the rear wheels in an instant. IT's hard to design a chassis that will react properly to that sudden change while the car is already under such a high rate of acceleration. At that point, I believe it's almost out of the driver's control. The chassis has to be designed to handle it. And the track surface has to be "super good". Those cars should not be allowed to run in a lane after an oil-down. IT's just too dangerous for BOTH cars.
I certainly don't have the answers, but I believe rule changes need to be made and the track surfaces need to be maintained better when those cars run. Right now, IMO, they're just waaaaaay too unstable and dangerous.

Hell, in '64 Art Christman made full passes in a solid front & rear axle blown Comet with the tires smoking ALL the way down the track. That was a handfull and an extreme credit to the driver's skills. BUT..........the car had the same power to the wheels for the entire run. Start adding booster rockets to the package after launch, and the video shows you exactly what can happen. These cars need to be designed for a smooth flow of power right from launch. Once the chassis is already "set", it doesn't react well to sudden changes of power.

That's just my view, and about all I have to say about it.
