Some say he is just darn lucky, others say he is very skilled. Love him or hate him it looks like hes on a roll.
Will this be the year he grabs his 5th Cup title? Thoughts....

You don't win 80+ races and 4 cups by being lucky. He is one of the best ever.
I'm a life-long Earnhardt fan. I rarely want Gordon to win (only if he's beating other guys I dislike more), but I do have respect for him.
With the points lead he gained during the "regular season", and seeing how he and his team have picked it back up during the Chase, it's looking like #5 for him.

All racers rely somewhat on luck, but that's not enough to win in Gordon style! He's a natural, and one of only two that I watch - the other is Tony Stewart http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I think talent as a race car driver may show in wins. It really depends on the team and MONEY. That said Gordon is in an elite group. I think a guy like Matt Kenseth is every bit as good.

Tony should be fun to watch next season, especially if he misses a few races running a Toyota. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif The interviews will be great, look for expletives and how the car sucks. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Roush-Fenway is not hurting in the $$$ department. Kenseth is a good driver when his equipment is on the money. It takes a great driver to drive your car to the front when the handling is garbage and you need to find a different line around the track to make it work.

Yea, a guy that's been a champ in the IRL, sprint cars and Nascar is a better whiner than he is a driver http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
I think at any given time all of the big name drivers have been known to whine, including old Jeffy.

yeah, me too.......well almost, I never want Gordo to win and right now I can't think of anyone I dislike more. Especially since I stayed up to watch that crap on saturday night. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif I was a Ryan Neuman fan for about 8 seconds. He must have a wall magnet in his car..everytime he's lead this year.
Honestly, its been tough to watch since 2001 http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Craig,
Yes,it's his to lose.He and Stewart are the best crossover drivers in the series, bar none. That's why they havre six titles between them-how many others in the last few years can make that claim?.
Short track,miles,superspeerdways..they are competitve on all-but the real reason why those two are so successful is their dominance on the road courses.Yes there's only two on the schedule, but a well set up car on a road course does not guarantee you'll be at the front like at an oval.Look how hard the road race specialists have to work for top fives on them and that's their bread and butter.Hardly a coincidence that all the new drivers coming into the series are from that backround.I thinkit's analogous to the old AMA series where you had to be multi talented in a variety of racing enviroments and clearly those two are head and shoulders above the rest in that respect.
That being said, what do you call a basement of Johnson's,Gordon's and Stewarts?
The whine cellar!

Whether it's Gordon, Stewart or Earnhardt....they're driving a Chevy. I've been pulling for Stewart; being from the Midwest. Gordon is still great! I won't be on the rice bandwagon next year and threw a perfectly good NAPA hat in the garbage this spring........ http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

technically, w/out the chase format, this would be Gordon's SIXTH championship ( under normal points system, he would have this one locked down, and he would also have won the 2004 cup according to nascar ). I guess that really dosn't count for much, but still, just knowing what he could have done by now is pretty amazing in itself

You can shoot for this statement, but I was never, ever, a #3 fan. IMHO, he was one of the dirtiest racers on the track. It was very sad that he died, but I would not want my son to think of him as a role model - Texas Terry is/was the face of Nascar in the 90's.

Agressive is not dirty! It was his style and when it happened to him he didn't complain (ala Pococno and his run in with Mayfield) If I was a team owner and my driver didn't want to win bad enough to get you loose and ease you up the track when he's being blocked then I'd get another driver. While I like Mark Martin his style of driving (lets all play nice) doesn't win championships as evidenced by his record.

Tap the brakes before you loose control and run off in the ditch! I live in Texas, and he or his brother weren't the most popular driver(s) here, except maybe in Corpus Christi. The 24 and 3 were the most visible and high profile teams during the 90's. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

First, it's not hate. I just like to root for anyone who is beating him (yes the frequent winners usually get booed the most, ask any of the old Waltrip or Earnhardt fans).
Over the years I've noticed that most people like myself, tend to cheer on drivers that were on top as they became interested in the sport. When I went to Daytona in 1988 I didn't know any drivers and since I was with a bunch of Ford owners who were Bill Elliot fans I chose the most obvious Chevrolet, the black Goodwrench number 3 to cheer for. The rest is history.
When Gordon made his debut at Atlanta in 92 I thought nothing of it. In 93 when he ran for rookie honors up against Bobby Labonte, I went with Bobby because I liked his brother Terry and he was the underdog. When Jeff got his first win in the 600 in 94 he cried so bad they needed the jet dryers in victory lane. His fate was sealed in my book.
I do not deny he is very talented and it dosen't hurt to have the much needed endless supply of money to help him win.
This year I am hoping Bowyer has a miracle because he is the underdog and the darkhorse.
Definetly no "hate" bones in my body. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Exactly! My son (7) loves Tony Stewart so I hold my tongue when Stewart's leading a race. At the entry to our local Home Depot there's a Coke machine with a life-size Tony Stewart on the front (as if he actually drank "red" sugar-filled Coke). People keep blackening Tony's middle teeth with Sharpies and the vendor finally stopped trying to clean it off.
I like Jeff Gordon because so many people hate him. Hell of a good driver too.

Although it has never made the news headlines, both Gordon and Dale Sr. had great respect for each other. Early on, Gordon said that Dale taught him alot about Cup racing on and off the track. Earnhardt encouraged Gordon to license and control his image for marketing (Dale was the first Cup driver to do it.) They actually entered into several business partnerships before Dale passed away.
I'am thinking Gordon learned well from the #3.

If I could have any driver for a full season to drive , deal with sponsers and present a positive image it would be Jeff Gordon.
If I had my choice of any driver to run just 10 races in sprints, nascar, iroc type, indy/champ car or imca I would choose Tony Stewart. He can drive and win in anything. But if he doesn't slim down he's not going to fit in a car, even the COT.
