I need some help to find out what I need to do to have a Chevelle shipped from Canada (Ottawa) to AZ. IT'S NOT FOR ME...LOL

The purchaser of the car will fly me to Ottawa (or not) and rent me a car to make sure all the docs are in order to get it across into the US.

Since I don't have a clue...can someone help me out? What is the easiest way to accomplish this? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

You can either PM me or answer here. TIA for any help offered.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/youguysrock.gif

Hello Bruce,

I've done this a couple of times and things always seem to be changing. I know when it is done by the person who is the purchaser it is a fairly simple deal, when it is done by someone other than the purchaser it usually becomes a commercial entry. The discretion and powers that customs officers have may seem ridiculous at times but they are protecting our borders and I'd rather deal with an inconvenience rather than a terrorist in our countries.

Here is my advice, because each port director might interpret the rules differently contact the port you will be exporting the vehicle through from this list:

web page (http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/ports/)

ask what they require at that port for documentation and if you get a burocratic officer that got up on the wrong side of the bed ask for the port director, the fact you are calling in advance is usually appreciated by them.

If you use a broker they will also ask which port you are using or they will fill out every form required and charge you accordingly, although it is not that expensive (less than $500).

I think the above customs website has a list of brokers also.

Good luck.

Bruce I have brought cars from your side of the border and find a broker is the easiest and quickest way to get cars imported. There should be no problems at all. Ottawa is a great city ,I wish I was not 5 hours from there and I would come meet you. The transport company mentioned above is out of Toronto and I have used them often. They will also look after all the paperwork.I bought a car from Texas 3 years ago and never seen the car until they delivered it to my driveway. They do it all.

Sam,
Maybe you're not an expert, but I like the way you think! Anytime you need a co-pilot.................http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

One more question if I may...what are the regulations for going into Canada? Is a passport now required at all times?
Or, is it only needed if you fly into Canada? What about a one day trip?

With the suggestion listed above the person that bought this Chevelle would just contact them...and they would handle it all?

That might be the way to go for him....

I do not think a passport is required as of this year.If your guy is sure of this car I would let the transport company take care of all the details. Ottawa has a fair size airport with a lot of commercial flights in and out daily.

Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative

Areas that fall under the WHTI:
Canada
Mexico

Bermuda
The Caribbean region (includes 17 regions)

AIR TRAVEL

Implemented on January 23, 2007, ALL PERSONS traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean region are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.

LAND AND SEA TRAVEL
The following summarizes information available on the Department of Homeland Security’s website.

JANUARY 31, 2008
U.S. and Canadian citizens will need to present either a WHTI-compliant document, or a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate. DHS also proposes to begin alternative procedures for U.S. and Canadian children at that time.

SUMMER 2008
At a later date, to be determined, the departments will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have either a U.S. passport; a U.S. passport card; a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, FAST, or SENTRI; a valid Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) when traveling in conjunction with official maritime business; or a valid U.S. Military identification card when traveling on official orders.

The implementation date will be determined based on a number of factors, including the progress of actions undertaken by the Department of Homeland Security to implement the WHTI requirements and the availability of WHTI compliant documents on both sides of the border. DHS and DOS expect the date of full WHTI implementation to be in the summer of 2008. The precise implementation date will be formally announced with at least 60 days notice.
Note: The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory.

U.S. PASSPORT AND OTHER TRAVEL DOCUMENTS

U.S. Passport: U.S. citizens may present a valid U.S. passport when traveling via air, land or sea between the U.S. and the aforementioned Western Hemisphere countries.
The Passport Card: This limited-use, wallet-size passport card is not yet available and is under development. When available it will only be valid for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean region (includes Bermuda).
Other Accepted Travel Documents: SENTRI, NEXUS, FAST and the U.S. Coast Guard Mariner Document. Members of the U.S. Armed Forces on active duty traveling on orders are exempt from the passport requirement. DHS has more information on these travel documents. This information may be seen at www.dhs.gov. (http://www.dhs.gov.)
ABOUT WHTI

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative is a result of the Intelligence Reform and Prevention Act of 2004 (IRTPA), requiring all travelers to present a passport or other document that denotes identity and citizenship when entering the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on February 22 its intent to propose, as part of the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), significant flexibility regarding travel documents required for U.S. and Canadian children as part of WHTI requirements for U.S. land and sea border entry in 2008.

The goal of the initiative is to strengthen U.S. border security while facilitating entry for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors by providing standardized documentation that enables the Department of Homeland Security to quickly and reliably identify a traveler.

Unsure on cost feasibility especially if all is offered by the carrier anyway, but don't forget our friend George Zapora at GM Canada Vintage Services mentioned they offer the paperwork services for any brand of vehicles coming/going to and from Canada..

Hylton...I *may* be coming...or maybe not.

He may just use the carrier listed above to do everything. I got quotes from them today for him. He is in Colorado on a pleasure trip...so ???

I appreciate the offer to pick me up at the airport. I will let you know what happens though.

And thanks again to everyone with their suggestions.
