This might have been posted before. I think by NJ Steve. What is the best way and best chemical to clean the subframe around the motor mounts, steering box and most of the areas that got greased over the years? Don't want to repaint anything just clean the grease and road grime off without killin whats left of the original paint in the motor compartment. I do have a small pressure washer. Thanks, Sam

Don't use a pressure washer because it will take the grease off along with the paint underneath. Been there done that. Try towles and wax and grease remover from the paint shop like dx330 from PPG.

Not sure what NJ posted about grease removal..I know he had some good stuff for rust removal.Sammy if its grease and crud...safest way is just good old fashioned de-greaser and a stiff brush.

Why don't you post a pic of the subframe - or maybe the whole car? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

That'd be my suggestion too. Simple Green, Krud Kutter and Castrol Super Clean have worked well for me. And for brushes, I have good luck with toothbrushes and 1" - 2" cheap hog bristle (chip) brushes. Makes it easy to save any markings you might run across and they're easy on 30 - 40 year old paint.

When I did the subframe for my 70 Nova, I found that it looked like paint, but it wasn't really painted from the factory. If the subframe had any black paint on it, it was minimal. It had been dipped in some type of soft tar or cosmoline black coating. It all came off when I cleaned it with stoddard solvent. Since the car had been a garaged 30,000 mile car from South Carolina the subframe ended up with no rust or paint, just bare metal.
