One of our members here, Mark( Late BrakeU2 ) lives in the danger zone here in Malibu. Here are some shots from his place Sunday afternoon. The wind is just insane and there are fires all over Southern California. I spoke with him this morning in between his power going on and off ( no cell service up there) He had gone down the hill to gather more supplies, he's got his 7 Dogs up there with him. (Pictured is Max). Good luck Mark!

these wildfires remind me of the oct 2003 firestorm we had that devasted socal . i live in long beach and the closest fire is about 20 miles away and last night the air was thick with smoke . you could barely take a breathe without choking and this morning it's a spooky looking orange colored sky around here .

Good to see you post Bart. I almost called Mark...after calling my best friend from high school (also Mark) who told me that the fires were in Malibu...and that they had wind gusts of 108 mph on Satuday night http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif
We will hope for the best. The fire departments out there are second to none... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

They are also fires farther south as I just heard from 3 relatives that have been evacuated from the north part of san diego. One was in a rest home and is now in a box at qualcom stadium.. what a way to get box seats. I hope they get it under control soon.

One of the many fires in the Valencia area is in Stevenson Ranch near Magic Mountain and it appears to be heading over the hill to Porter Ranch, that's where we live. The packing has started and the cars are backed in the driveway. I told my wife our daughter can drive my car and leave hers behind, I'm taking the '69 if we get the order to evacuate. Last time there was a fire this size we had a pumper in the street all night watching over us. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
I really hope Mark is OK. He's had no power, no cell service and the fire was headed straight for his home according to news reports.

Beautiful animal. I'd be packed and gone! (easy for me to say.)
I heard from my cousin in Rancho Palos Verdes this morning. He said they're fairly comfortable at present, but do have a lot of smoke and ash falling around them. Bad situation.

Yikes, after just watching extensive coverage on these fires, my heart goes out to all the residents of the effected areas. There was a news reporter standing at the scene of his home of 20 years burning to the ground. They also showed several garages of "classic" cars, one having just been completed a few days ago, all burnt to a crisp. I did notice that some vehicles left out away from the house were spared.
Don't wait, get out now. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gifOne newsman covered the history of the area known as Malibu and said that's where Chevrolet got the name.
I did not know that.

I'am thinking that Mark has enough sense to get himself and the dogs outta there if push comes to shove ....at least I hope so.
Anyone know if his Dale Earnhardt Intimidator Camaro is in the danger zone?

I'm with you Norm. My cousin grew up here in central Illinois but moved to LA in the early 70s. His home AND GARAGE are built on steel piling due to the severe land conditions,.................... MUD SLIDE AREA!
He lived a little more inland until about fifteen years ago when he bought this place. Since then they've tripled the size of the house and built a nice big garage. Great view overlooking Catalina Island but I keep thinking they're gonna get a much closer look at it one of these days. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif
Not for me. I'll stay right here and take my chances with tornadoes! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

carlsbad is clear of the fire danger but the fire in rancho bernardo is making headway towards the pacific ocean and already threatening rancho santa fe .also really getting hit hard now is the residents of bigbear in the communities of arrowhead , green valley and running springs
this afternoon they showed the remains of a house in the running springs area of big bear and it was totally destroyed .what was sad was the news reporter and camera man showing the burnt out remains of a fully restored 57 ford thunderbird
we're really struggling here in socal with these fires as there is just not enough resources to help fight all the wildfires .and there just isn't enough aircraft to help but we're getting help from the military with water dropping C-130's that can deploy 3000 gallons of water .what is really cool to watch is the DC-10 aircraft as it get's down to almost tree-top level and deploys over a mile long of foscheck chemical .right now the local news channel that has been covering the fires non-stop since sunday is saying that the fires in big bear and in the socal area of irvine /santiago canyon are getting really nasty with the fires regaining intensity and threatening homes

Hi Guys,
Made it through this one, fire got to within a couple hundred yards but those air crews did an amazing job-saved dozens of homes in my area.
All animals accounted for, still no power or phone since sunday morn but at least I have a home which unfortunately some people down the hill from me can't say.
Chad-you know where I keep the hot rods at,it's the earthquakes that will get you there!

update on fires burning in socal and san diego
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
just got done watching a news conference with gov schwarzteneger and other officials right now these are some of the figures of acreage and houses destroyed since sunday
total acreage burned as of early this morning with all the fires from socal to san diego and is expected to continue to climb :
426,000 acres
total structures burned down/destroyed :
1500 houses
570 out buildings and commercial building
there's still alot of fires burning up in the big bear moutain resort with only 10 percent containment
san diego is really getting hit hard with a couple new fires breaking out in camp pendleton "camp horno" . the large fire that has been burning out of control now is threatening the small moutain community of julian and also his heading towards anza borrego park
the winds even though the santa ana's have died down are still strong and unpredictable

other areas in san diego the witch creek fire which is the biggest fire in san diego is 10 percent contained and at 196k acres and threatening the little country town of julian
the magic fire that threatened the magic mountain valencia area was reported to be started by a construction crew using a welder

Thanks Bruce,
Pretty big flare up yesterday but winds have subsided so manageable.Area looks like a lunar landscape and very murky with smoke from the inland blazes. The front that was expected to drop down this weekend will stay in the bay area-forecast is for continued hot and dry with the next round of Santa Ana'a possibly by next friday.I'm leaving my hose line and ladders on the roof till we get significant rain(last time that happened was 2005).Still no phone and sporadic power..at least I have a home
