[b] Does anyone know what happened to this Camaro?
It was a fixture in front of Motion and at local tracks for quite some time.

This is the motor. It was actually used as a display piece in Motion, in front of the parts counter
before it was put into the Camaro!

Wow, Fascinating stuff! And yet another issue of CARS I have yet to find! I'd love to know what happened to it also, as it seems like such a high profile car would have been saved. Here are two more pictures of that car, one from an ad, and one from the title page of an article about it by Joel. I will try to locate the rest of the pages of the article.

I miss Friday night back in the day (1976-84 for me). Then, where I was in NorCal, cruising died/got killed-off in '85. Now I live for our local show season when I can cruise into the fairgrounds (or wherever) and kinda' get that same feeling we used to get as kids when we arrived at whatever Main we were cruising that night.

Look at all the pictures of that car racing at a track. Do you see the wheels off the ground in any of those pictures?? No there not, so how did it do it on the street with less traction?? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

That picture shows it smoking the back tires and pulling the fronts off the ground come on. They may jumped on several times and the wheels came the ground but standing still and pulling the wheels I can't buy it.

Maybe a 67 camaro wouldn't pull the front tires on the street, but a guy I worked with had a 69 Chevelle 396/375 with 10 1/2" slicks that would pull the front tires 8" on the street, in a drive-in restaurant parking lot or the drive way at the gas station. Just amazed everyone at the time. He did have 5.38 rear gears though..... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

I know what you are saying Kim but those back tires look planted pretty good. In the old days the drag strips did not have concrete starting pads but the highways did! Smoke may be from the right side header http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif but you may be right. Trick photography? the street in front of the shop was asphalt not concrete.
VW's would regularly get air in that spot.
The photo does NOT look touched, the shadows would not be that good.

You know.. if that were just a run of the mill '68 Camaro I would have to agree..... but that is the Baldwin/Motion full competition Record Setting Drag Car there...in it's prime no less... Not only is that car yanking the tires up on the street.. I'll bet it did it quite easily.. And to me that "smoke" looks more like dust off the ground being stirred up from the open headers at wide open throttle.. but thats just my opinion.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif
jtower1969

The "smoke" is located in front of the tire. and only on the passenger side. So unless the car is in reverse doing a peg leg burn out...it's dust from the ground or from the right header.

I always loved that shot too...the '68 Goat this side of the '64 Poncho is braking to turn around and join the fun?.
Anyway, is it even the same car for sure?. Although both are lettered and have the dash-tach, the street shot shows a stock hood also look at the leading edge of the roof...is that just shadows or a vinyl top?.

I agree Pete. I'm not sure if that is the same car. Hey I love that picture I still have the mag. it was in. I think it's one of the best shots taken back then. I just feel the car didn't do that from a standing start.

I had M/T cheater slicks on my '68 Ram Air Firebird for a short time. The car had pretty well everything done to it and still be "stock". I couldn't make those slicks hook up no matter what I did and the car certainly wasn't making A/MP horsepower. Getting on and off the gas in low could get the wheels up a bit, (so a friend told me). I tend to agree with Kim. There were a lot of smoke and mirrors magazine articles back then. Remember the GTO Ferrari comparison where the GTO blew the Ferrari away. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'll have to get into the attic and drag out all the old magazines that I have stashed away. You tend to forget all the good old stuff in them. I've always taken magazine articles as entertainment and nothing more. Works for me.

Smoke's in front of the tires so it's probably a huge open-header exhaust belch emitted when the gas pedal was mashed to the floor.

Hi Glen:
I hope this settles the nonsense I've seen around this photo. Since I took the photo I know it's real.
He made just a couple of passes and I nailed the shot.
Somehow the shot on the Yenko website and what you have sent looks as though it may have been retouched.
I'm not sure if there was that much daylight under the wheels when I took it.
However, the wheels were up. It's the real deal. It was shot during actual dyno testing, not so I could get a shot pulling the wheels.
It was shot on a Saturday and the car was being readied for the track on Sunday.
Hope this helps,
Marty

If you look under the car you can see what appears to be a header collector and distortion in the picture which is probably heat/smoke

Ed, cars today pull the front end all the time but 1967 we didn't have the tires, tranny brakes or traction we have today period.
My Gibb Nova would pull the wheels on the street. 5:67 gears floater read end & 14x32 goodyears. Very easy to today but not back then.

I have had that number plate since about 1980/81 -
I did not renew it to the current style blue & white NY plate a few years ago as its much more lax in Pa.
That car has seen action from tracks on the Island to Cecil County, but mostly on the street.

Hopefully the final word on this!
Believers & Non-Believers:
I noticed that there seems to be a controversy over the shot of daylight under the front wheels of the '68 Baldwin-Motion A/MP Camaro taken on Sunrise Highway. Non-Believers doubt the ability of the Camaro to actually pull the wheels on the street.
Since I'm the guy who took the photo with a real camera (Nikon FTN) and real film (Kodak TriX) and still has the negatives, I can assure you that this is the real deal.
It was during dyno-testing and Joel Rosen or Billy Mitchell backed it off the dyno and on to the street.
There were two passes and both times the car hooked up and yanked the front wheels. The headers were open which explains the "smoke" under the front of the car.
The car, sponsored by Motion Supercar Club and CARS Magazine, went on to set a number of NHRA National Records and drive Grumpy Jenkins crazy!
It was the poster car for our "Win On Sunday, Sell On Monday" program which established Baldwin-Motion
as the premier builder and marketer of niche market musclecars. And, we still are!
And no, neither Joel nor I have a clue as to where this car is today.
Enjoy,
Marty

Antbody notice the 4 door Rambler in the other lane, it looks like it has air under it's front tires too. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Anybody else notice the two slot-looking things under the front bumper - what are those? Looks like the old 4-4-2 cold air intakes maybe..

[b] I know I have some pictures of this somewhere - but none I can find!
The OUTA' SITE was campaigned by Champman Automotive and driven for a time by Terry Hedrick.
Here are a couple shots of some very similar cars taken at NY National.

Looking at that wheelie I remember back in grade 11 math class in 1972 staring out the class windows watching muscle cars coming in and out of the parking lot during class. Guess thats why I had a 51% average in class. I drive by the school often and just smile when I look at the parking lot and think back to the day. The school had a 50 year homecoming last year and all the car guys from school 35 years ago showed up in the cars they own today. My 68 Z,2 -427 vettes, mustangs galore,440 cuda, roadrunner, and some early novas.

I do the same thing you do. Always thinking about the old days. You drive by several places. Closed up gas stations and factories, etc. and remember seeing what was parked in the lots as you drove buy or left school or work each day. My old memory is always working. I do this http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif to jar it loose at times. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Yes those were the days,39 a gallon for high test and a set of slicks for under 100 bucks, and then we had to grow up.
