My wife's birthday/Christmas is coming up, and she's wanting a new digital camera...what do I need to look at? She mentioned a Canon of some kind she saw somewhere, and my mom mentioned the camera that Eddie Martin's wife had in Las Vegas last week looked to be teeny tiny...other than that, I'm on my own! LOL!! I don't need anything fancy, just something to capture evidence of some ornery kids...

Any of the Canon Power Shot series are fantastic. I was in the same boat about 6 months ago and I bought a Canon G7 from B and H in NYC. Awesome piece. 10MP, endless shooting capabilities and varying shooting modes... almost an hour of video shooting with crisp color and sound. Doesn't matter which brand you get, buy the extended coverage warranty and a beefed up memory card/extra battery.

I use an Olympus - Stylus 600
Great camera not too big / small, more features then I can use, I carry it everywhere!
Get the biggest memory and battery in what ever you choose.

I just purchased a Fujifilm FinePix S5700 (http://www.dpreview.com:80/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixs5700.asp) 7 MP camera to replace my old and ailing Canon Powershot S400. While I'm still getting acclimated to the Fuji, I'm VERY happy with what I'm seeing so far, and even better, the camera is more than affordable.

The Fuji S5700 really has me looking, and I really don't need another camera. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif My 5200 does everything I could ask for and more, but for the ladies it may be overkill. They're probably more interested in a compact point-and-shoot that they don't have to 'fiddle' with. (Too many options tend to turn them away.)
No matter what you choose, it will be outdated by Christmas so close your eyes and pick one. Only suggestion I would have is to stay with a premium brand name; Sony, Canon, Olympus, Fuji or even a Lumix (Panasonic).
Ask Kwhizz what he uses. Small, great resolution and obviously TRIED & TRUE. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

I took this picture with my Canon S3-IS Powershot in low light, barely leaning over the front of the car with no flash. It has a 12X optical zoom, and many other features. It was a little less than $500. then but the price has dropped. It takes movies and has a Macro and Super-Macro mode with a focal distance of 0. You can lay something on the lens and take a picture of it. It's 7meg, but I think that's all that's needed for great detail. Higher megs just use up memory with no noticable gain on photo quality (IMO).

I still dig the Nikon Coolpix series, I just upgraded from my 3200 to the 7600 new in the box off ebay for a hundo, shoots crystal clear pics from broach marks to nice pics of cars and will do vids and fits in my coat pocket. for everyday stuff there more than plenty and super easy to use. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

I snapped this pic earlier today while documenting some of the issues I found during the tear-down of a previously "restored" carb ( http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif ) that just came in:
http://www.yenko.net/attachments/299837-13_wrong_power_valve_gasket_installed_INcorrectly. JPG
That's straight out of the camera, no editing whatsoever other than a quick re-size to fit the format of the website here, and on basic macro.

Bruce;
I'm doing them as attachemnts, not hotlinked from a hosting site. The forum is giving me guff about the file size, but I have the pic squashed all the way down to 500X440 (645K pixels) and it's saying the file size is too large. The one I posted above is bigger than that! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

The cats were dead-on with a zero. The power valve gasket was but one of several issues I found in that carb when I tore it apart.
Still amazes me what passes for "restored" sometimes.

Forgot one other *must have* the wife mentioned, a lithium battery...her current Kodak eats AA batteries faster than I eat cheeseburgers!
Compact and easy to use probably best sums up the rest of her requirements...why she's mentioned Canon I don't know?

Rob... those Canon Powershots are pretty cheap and they're basically ideal for the beginner. Some of the Powershots even come with instructional CD's instead of packets of information like my G7 came with. I would also imagine all of them come with the lithium battery as well. With today's technology, you cannot go wrong with any brand... if she wants a Canon, I guess you know what you're picking up... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I just got a Canon PowerShot SD1000 for $189 at Sears and a 2GB SD card for $19 at Office Max. I really like the camera right out of the box.
