I think this topic may have been discussed recently within the last few months, but I wanted to be certain. I recently acquired a set of nos 1970 full wheel covers/hubcaps for my 70 Nova SS car. I plan on alternating these between the steel wheels & dog dish caps I currently have on the car and a set of Cragar SS mags that I also have. I acquired another set of correct steel wheels that are black and was wondering if the wheels were painted body color irregardless whether they were receiving the dog dish caps or full hubcap/wheel covers. I think that they were because I have a picture from the GM Media Archives that shows a 1970 SS Nova small block car with the style hubcaps I have and it appears that the wheels are painted body color but it is tuff to tell for certain. You can only see the outside edge of the wheel with the full hubcap on. The other media pictures show non SS, base model Novas with the same hubcaps and I can tell for certain that the steel wheels are black colored and not body color. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

Full wheel cover = black rims
Dog dish caps = body color rims
Steve
If a vehicle was ordered to be painted black lacquer, along with full wheel cover wheels too, would those rims be painted with the same lacquer black as the body,or was it a different chemical mixture resulting in a slightly different shade?

I would say just the normal eggshell black....Why waste more black paint on a wheel that already has black on it? Unless it is getting a poverty cap...then paint away. The backside is always black, with body color overspray from the front.I believe the wheels were all shipped black and the wheelcover option called out which to be painted and which rims are left alone... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Mr.Chevy, I am interested to read what code wheel you are running on your 70 Nova SS. The Camaro SS 14x7 wheels were coded CL, and are quite difficult to find. I am planning to use a set of PO-2 full wire simulated covers. Are those the covers you are refering to, or the basic PO-1's ??????

Chuck, I have the xt coded steel wheels. The hubcaps I am referring to are the basic PO-1s. They are so ugly they are beautiful!!

I've heard of a few dog dish equipped cars to be shipped with black painted wheels rather than body color too. I know of one 69 Nova SS396 in particular in which the original owner confirmed was definitely delivered to him this way. Probably not the way it was "supposed" to be, but some wheels missed getting painted body color when not being equipped with optional full face hubcaps.
