What an idiot!! "Lets wreck an expensive new car".
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/stupid.gif
A couple of years ago a guy in a new vette did a burn out at a local car cruise and lost control, went up over a curb and into landscaping and bushes nearly striking spectators at this show. The car was damaged fairly good and the guy had to have it towed. The funniest thing about it all is that a friend of mine is a Police Officer that loves cars. He was on duty and standing by my car talking with some of my friends and me when this guy pulled out and did this. He did not see my friend or the Police Cruiser by us. My friend was kind to him and only wrote him for failure to control and not reckless operation which would have really been a severe ticket!!

Doing a mean burnout is one thing. Purposely blowing out your tires and ripping up a quarter panel on a brand new car is another. Even if money is no object, I can't condone that IMO.

I think people are missing the point. It appears that the gentleman doing the burnout is the Plant Manager at the Bowling Green, KY Corvette assembly plant. The car is a pre-production prototype that can't be legally sold anyway. It's a test mule... a prototype... part of one of the pre-launch builds to evaluate components.

Pre-launch vehicles are typically used for testing and evaluation, and then eventually torn down and scrapped. Therefore, I see no harm in what he did. As the plant manager, I'm sure he has the access and right to do what he did to a car that would be scrapped anyway.

You've gotta admit, he put on a helluva show! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

I watch "Top Gear" every Monday night on BBC America, and that is the only time he was impressed with any Corvette. He also took the Z06 from a dead stop to top speed in 5th gear, with no shifting. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif Very impressive test drive on a long runway. However, he also said that the Z06 was not practically suited for every day driving, just too much car for the effort required. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif In other words, just get the regular 'vette unless you plan on going racing. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Well, why doesn't this seemingly intelligent plant manager test the Z06's airbag deployment at 180 mph into a bridge abuttment for his next entertaining trick? I mean the car is only going to be scrapped anyway as it's a preproduction prototype and they arent really worth anything (at least for maybe 25 or 30 years.)

Gee what would a preproduction test mule 67 L88 Corvette be worth or the test mule 1969 ZL1 Corvette out there???

Tire mfgs warn against spinning the rear tires above 30mph speedometer read out because the tire can blow well before it is worn through the belt pkg and cassing. Anyone standing near the exploding tire could be hit by shrapnel. Not the nanny type but there are dangers involved.

You'd be far safer riding a bicycle than being anywhere near that tire if it disintegrates while spinning at speed.

You could choke on your cereal spoon too. Again, one is more likely than the other. I don't know why you want to argue with me about something you don't understand. I spent 35 years in the tire business and have seen just about everything you could imagine from the inside of Michelin factories to 'ride and drives' all over the country and daily 'hands on' experiences (that are the real teachers of the business).

I have seen probably a half dozen or so passenger tire explosions (truck tires are an entirely different horror). One of which damn near killed me and another which seriously injured my father. A tire spinning at a standstill, as in the video, will reach thermal equilibrium and continue to gain heat since there is no fresh cool concrete or air flow to cool the tire. If and when it reaches the temp it was vulcanized at it will delaminate resulting in an explosion. What you see in the video is an instance where the tire was worn through the tread, belt pkg. and cords. That type of failure is far less dangerous than a delamination failure at speed.

If you were standing close to the barrier and a delamination failure occurred you would be in danger. A little more danger than falling off a bicycle.

If you need further explanation PM me.
