Had a couple of hours in L.A. on Thursday afternoon so I grabbed an Oldsmobuick from Thrifty and sped out to the NHRA museum in Pomona. I got there at 3:15 and was the only one there until they closed at 5:00.
Replica of Tommy Ivo's 1961 "Showboat" 4-Nailhead Buick, 4-wheel drive dragster. The real Showboat, converted to a Riviera-bodied exhibition car, is being restored to go on display beside this breathtaking replica.

The Sam Barris '49 Mercury custom, thought to be the first chopped '49 Mercury. Breathtaking. It is on display alongside the George Barris built Hirohata '51 Merc, owned by Jim McNeil since about 1960 and bought off of a used car lot!

Bill,
Thank you so much for sharing the photos from your trip. Christman certainly built some beautifil cars!
It's deceiving with the lighting in there, but I'm pretty certain Tom Jacobson's car is Nassau Blue.

Arin C and the Dream Truck - boy it's been a long time since I read Rod & Custom. Had every issue when I was a kid and drooled over that truck, the customs and the big motored rods! George Barris was a God back then.
And what an assortment of drag cars - some of the BEST!
What great shots thanks for that piece of nostalgia!!

Here's one I forgot to post, a remaining section of the plywood "Barris Kustom City" sign from the Lynnwood location, circa-1955. If you look closely you can see this section of the sign in the photo at upper left. Photo at upper right is George Barris's older brother Sam.

Bill, Did you fly into Ontario International?, that seems like an easier drive to Pomona, straight out the 10 freeway. That museum is just an hour drive from our house and they have many of the cars from the old days when we were teenagers. Thanks for taking the time to take us back. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

My layover hotel is the Westin at LAX and the Thrifty car rental is right next door. Ontario (ONT) layovers are much less convenient and are shorter (rest period) than LAX layovers. It's so easy to get a car the Thrifty that I prefer the LAX to the ONT layover. (There is a method to my madness!) Next time I have a long/all-day LAX layover I'll PM ya!
