We've all heard the stories about some old farmer with a long-forgotten Corvette stashed away in a barn, right?
Here's that story in real-life, and it took place only ~30 miles from where I live.

That takes me back to when we found YS-043 in a barn in the late 80's. That picture looked familiar.

Seemed like nice chaps to me. Corvette Guys have to go to extremes to overcome stigma.
To straight axle guys, I'm sure this car is near the top of all lists. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

a factory blueprinted pilot car sure would rank that high for me...the guys drove it almost nonstop after picking it up at the factory to get to the race track and raced the piss out of it and got third, probably without a oil change or touching the motor, killer car! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Current owner Bill Connell is one of the nicest guys alive in the collector car hobby. He should be commended for bringing this car out for all to see. It was highlighted at BLOOMINGTON GOLD'S SPECIAL COLLECTION last June along with 17 other neat 1957 Corvettes where the COLLECTION celebrated 50 years of 57's.
Only 43 AIR BOX cars were produced per GM records. To date 24 cars have been found (the latest on Oct 14, 2007). Out of those 24, some histories are still trying to be found and authenicity questions exist with some.
Bill was very fortunate with this car as Jack Knab who also raced Corvettes from 1956-62 at Sebring and Daytona is still alive and went with Bill to the garage when the car was found. Jack verified the car as the car that he and Bill Howe picked up traveling together to St. Louis and then drove it to Cumberland to race in May 1957. The car even had its original engine and complete history for the last 45 years. It was only the early days that had questions.
Bill will be happy to talk with anyone about this car. And he will show it around the country in 2008.
We owe Bill and other 57 Air Box and 684 heavy suspension car owners a lot, as their sharing has allowed many of us to not only learn much more about these great cars, but to also add to the history books. You will see much more on this subject in the future.
I am happy to share if anyone needs more info.
