I was doing some cleaning of the undercarriage on the black 70 4spd car and noticed some primer showing through....beautiful red oxide finish. Car was undercoted with Ziebart back in the day....just wiping with some WD-40 took off some loose stuff and there it was. I will post some pics tomorrow (digital battery went south)...it amazes me how original this car is underneath...lots of cool details...real time capsule http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

Wilma, I tried to order a brand new '70 Nova SS in black and the dealer told me that color wasn't offered. I asked him to special order it in black or I wouldn't buy it. He just shrugged his shoulders and said it wasn't worth his time for what he'd make on the car. I left and bought a '70 MG Midget!

I needed something inexpensive for college after I retired the '62 for drag racing, and it "fit me like a glove". Drove it for 10 years. After the Nova deal fizzled, what was left???

Wilma,
I sure am sorry for side-tracking your thread. I do have some pics of it, but not on computer. I got a lot of wide-eyed looks when I unfolded myself from that car. It wasn't much longer than I was! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

By the way, I LOVE your Nova. IF that rat dealer would have let me order one, I KNOW I'd still own it today................! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Those wheels were an option on the 69-70 Nova Super Sport models only.. They did not come on an ordinary, non SS Nova. They would be coded RPO N66 for 1970. They are commonly referred to as the "five spoke SS wheel" They were also available on the 69-70 SS Chevelles....

I ordered, and recieved a 70 SS L78 nova. My dealer told me the only thing I could get was ralleys. I know you could order them on chevelles. That's why I wanted them on my nova. Maybe my dealer was a dumba$$ too. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I have the big 1970 Chevy sales book and it shows those 5 spoke wheels as an ordering option for the Nova SS. The salesman probably didn't want to do the added paperwork to special order the wheels. Probably a lazy a$$ in addition to being a dumb a$$... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

Eddie, those are the same wheels as shown on the craigslist ad. You have to be careful though because those wheels are being re-poped and there is a difference in value from an original set vs. re-pop set.. The re-pops look nice, I have seen them in person. All depends on what your after I guess.. For 1970 I believe the correct stamp code for those wheels should be AO...

I'll check with a friend who has the Gobi/Saddle gut SS car. I haven't seen it for a while but it seems to me that car has the 5 spoke wheels. If he has any documentation I'll see if I can get the codes.
So Black wasn't available on '70 Novas? Interesting....... and that leads me to another question. Was Burnished Brown available on '69 Novas?

I remember reading that you would like to see proof ie: original window sticker, build sheet etc. or other that they offered the N66 wheels on the 70 Novas. I tried high and low but could not find any of the above then I realized that I had seen a several copies of the GM Canadian documented Novas and sure enough the RPO N66 was there on a couple. I remember you said you tried to order them on your 70 Nova new but the dealer said they were not offered, just like Vernes dealer telling him that he could not order Tuxedo Black on a Nova but you could. I feel that someone will turn up with a original Window sticker someday showing the N66 wheel but I never seen one either. I still believe that they were available as per the assembly manuals and brochures in 70 and seeing original cars back in the day. I think your dealer was wrong or mistaken. Alot of dealers did not know about COPO Camaros either but we all know now they were available. I always thought on 69-70 Chevelle SS that the N66 wheel was standard. Tom when I clicked on your attachment to see the Red Oxide primer all that popped up was that Beautiful Black Nova! Just my thoughts http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

I still remember pretty well how I had "my" Nova spec'd out with the salesman. We had everything else picked and approved and left the color to last, which of course killed the deal. It was going to be an SS, 350, 4-spd, posi, black interior, FM and the 5 spoke wheels.
Is it possible that the black on black combo wasn't available at the beginning of production? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif

That is strange for sure Verne. The exact car you outline with the exception of the FM sits not 5 miles from me with the original owner.I see him from time to time so will ask if it was a early car or not.

The shop is a nice building....approx. 32 x 40. I can fit 8 cars but then there is no room to work...we keep 4 across the back and 3 in front. I use those dollys to roll the cars close together to optimize space. Space has radiant heat in the floor, alarm system, great lighting, quiet neighborhood (except for me)Plan on looking for a lift this year if I can....with the radiant heat we don't use the storage bags...don't need it. The guy built it big enough to store his motorhome in. Temp stays at about 60* all winter and very low moisture. the guy has the sheetrock to finish the inside, but that's a summer project because the cars would have to be moved outside.

ORIGLS6

If you're trying to remove undercoating/sound deadener, I highly recommend the good old Kerosene and paintbrush method. Apply with a spray bottle, let sit overnight, scrub with the soft brushes and wipe down with rags,.......repeat, repeat, repeat! For normal road grime and the like it's hard to beat Simple Green or Krud Kutter. But probably the MOST important item is PATIENCE. Soft brushes are key to retaining the original finish and markings. It takes longer (much, much longer) but you'll be happier at the end.

Ken, judging by the VIN your car must be later than mine...your window sticker looks like the one for my gold July 70 car....also minor differences in destination charge and base price...major options sem to be the same...very cool the line for the M20...just shows you the 3spd was the base tranny.

Jeff, Some G.M. mfg plants such as Camaros at Norwood, Ohio starting in 1970 used Red Oxide primer that entire body was submerged in. Other plants used a shade of Black primer..

Maybe someone will post a complete list of cars, plant locations and primer colors.

Arlington,Tx. & Van Nuys,Ca. also used Red Oxide on their GM A-Bodies too. It's just an interesting aspect of the assembly process to those that monitor this stuff Jeff.

Willow Run, MI apparently used it as an alternate on the Nova's bec/ the majority of Novas are black primer. It's just neat to see something different.

We rubbed on Benjamin's '69 Nova yesterday for a few hours, and started to scotch brite the firewall a little. It appears to have red oxide primer under there, quite surprised since the entire underside was black.

Is it possible that the same car could have two different primers used on it? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

BTW, didn't find any codes on the firewall - yet. Bummer, I was hoping something would jump right out, like 'L78' http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Cool. You're getting pix, right? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Now I guess I'll have to check my little '69. No traces in the trunk; I was there yesterday getting pix of the spatter paint for another member.

I have 2 Arlington Chevelle's both have the red oxide primer on floors. Both are 71's. Something interesting happens to primer as it age's on one of my cars the primer faded a little as you get out towards the rocker area. It turns a pinkish rose color. It must pick up some UV Rays somehow.
