NGK spark plugs..

Looking for the part number for the NGK plugs you guys recommend for the 1970 L78 motor....saw this once before.

this is what I found in a search
the 5671 is for the 840s, the UR5 is for the 291.

Tom, I run the UR5 in my motor in the Nova, 70 L78 Motor. Thats the correct plug for that motor. They are great!! Really woke the combustion chamber up.. I was using the new AC Delcos and they were junk. I was getting a surge in the RPM range at about 3,500. I put the NGK plugs in and it made a huge difference, much smoother at idle and strong the through RPM range.. I highly recommend them!! You can pick them up at Advanced Auto Parts. Thats were I got mine last summer. I think they were like .95 cents a plug.. Well worth it!!

Set them at .035" if the car still has an OE points style distributor.

IMO, no.

I've personally never found much benefit in fat plug gaps, all they do is work the rest of the ignition components that much harder. I used a Crane Xr-1 conversion on my 496, and with Autolite plugs gapped at .035", it never missed a beat on the dyno.

If anything, with compression you might need to tighten the gap a tad...or help cheat your power up/down as needed...we've played around with gaps a little in our Camaro, and @ 12.2:1 I wanna say we're ~32? But as someone above said, switching from our coveted AC plugs to NGK's cleared up a big end stumble, and showed power on the dyno, and we've never looked backed!

NGK is a great plug but..I use the CHEAPY Denso $1.98 plug [gap .35]in my NOVA..[970 HP N/A] and it starts up everytime and havent changed a PLUG since last May..!! is 9.50 ET all day long..at 3,600 lbs..!!

I try whatever WORKS...!! as long as you have the RIGHT HEAT RANGE...and it runs GOOD and DEPENDABLE...Thats all that matters to me...

I need to replace the plugs in my Wifes car and after reading this I'll give the NGK's a try. Does anyone know which plug would go in a GM crate engine 454/420HP, iron head? I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be in the NGK catalog.

A couple side notes to the superiority of NGK plugs;

Not sure if the same in the States or not but new offshore produced vehicles coming into Canada sometimes show up with Champions installed as 'original equipment' instead of the actual spec NGK's to save on import taxes!.
I believe they ship the Champ plugs and a few other simple items from here to Japan or wherever the production plant is so a lesser percent of the car is considered produced offshore hence the lesser import taxes.. Of course the Champs run like s**t in many applications and are quickly changed to the spec NGK's by service techs in the know.. This isn't publicised by the manufacturers for obvious reasons also not spread to the dealer level either to keep them from changing them under warranty!.

Also to NGK's credit, they're all I use on the old two-stroke racing snowmachines anymore too.. With mixed or injected oils, Champs and others foul very quickly in comparison to a set of NGK's!.

I've also got the NGK's in the outboards, I think the little boat's plugs are three or four years old and it always cranks on half a pull.
