I need an original GM, 8" BB timing cover. Please no repro's or re-welded tabs on 7" covers. Been there already http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif.

I will take a look Bill But not sure if I have any left.I assume you are looking for a 69 solid lifter one. I may have sold the last two on e-bay. I am confused on the tab reweld on a 7". The correct 69/70 8" square port cover uses a totally different tab than the 7" so moving a 7 inch would still have the wrong tab and you would have to destroy a good 8" to get the right tab.Am I reading this right??

I think ZIP products sells just the '69-style 8" tab separately, and I've seen a few that have used the ZIP tab to make an 8" cover.

WOW am I ever out of touch with what goes on today. I would never think they would repo a timing tab for that purpose but obviously they have. Thanks Ed for making me aware. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Yes sir that is the one we are looking for. Hopefully I will have one left in the pile for Bill.Yours off a 70 by any chance Rick. Most of the 69 ones I had were date coded and the 70's were not. May have been different in the US.

I guess my original wanted post sounded accusatory. I didn't mean to suggest someone on SYC would sell a fake cover, but you never know who will respond to a wanted ad. I said it, because I already bought one fake cover. I went to blast the paint off it and the glued on tab, FELL OFF !! I did get the purchase price back, but also learned something new. Someone is moving tabs out and gluing them back to fit the 8" balancer. Now I know what to look for, and the specific shape the tab should be. I'm amazed at what some guys will do to make a couple bucks

I have an 8" timing chain cover that was chromed that is dated 31 69. Is there a way to get the chrome off with out messing up the timing cover or just paint over the chrome? Also does the 31 69 mean that it was made the 31st day of 1969 or is it march 1st 1969??? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Take it to a chrome plater and have them de-plate it.It only cost a few dollars,at least here it does, and you can even wait for it.
...31st day of 1969.

Its Thirty first day of the month 1969, not a month and day code..best to replace it but you can also sand blast the heck out of it and paint it as a backup plan,it wont hold paint as long though

Thanks for the info. I'll see what I can do to save it. Seems like any question asked on this website someone can answer. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/youguysrock.gif

mr70 is right about de-plating the chrome cover; the plater will chrome strip it, leaving the nickel and copper.

After it's chrome stripped, bead blast it, epoxy prime and then paint for good results. I did this to the rear bumper of my El Camino SS about 20 years ago (when the painted-bumper look was in) and the paint is still in good shape today.

Good luck, BCD.

Kurt,, if you're interested in selling the cover and it's an original GM/8" timing chain cover that was chromed, I can have it removed. Can you post, or email me a picture? Also how much are you asking with shipping to NJ?

Sorry for taking a while to answer but I have been busy. The timing cover I have isn't for sale although it sounded like it was. I was just trying to find out if I could get the chrome off to try and save it. Sorry for any confusion. It probably isn't in as good of condition that you would like it anyways.
I am adding an attachment of what it looks like. I have not figured out how to get the picture to come up without having to click on the attachment above the post. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Dave,
If you have more than one, then I'd be interested in one after you take care of Bill.

From what I've been told, many of the covers are not dated. I'm more interested in fitting and correctness. If you would, email me with what you have, and your asking price. Thanks Bill

If it's dated, I need spring of 69.The engine was assembled the end of April, so it would have to be Jan thru mid April 69.
