Been doing some winter maintenance on the black 70 L78 4 speed car...getting ready for the Florida Mini-Nats in Orlando. Water pump was going so I got a correct dated unit...decided to take care of a few other things while I was in there. The original fuel pump had a crack in the fitting (too much muscle) had it rebuilt...also going to re-install the original smog pump and hardware. Took some photos of the parts and collected some numbers for reference...if someone needs a shot of something let me know...I'll try to get it. Neat old car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Are those 2-piece rotors I see there? I thought they were
phased out in late '69 production. How did a '70 Nova get
a set? Is this unusual?

This is a 12/69 car...so the parts were made before that...don't know when the transition took place...as far as I know they are original.

Made some progress today while I was waiting for my sweetie to return home....got the fuel pump, water pump and smog pump installed. Forgot about the water pump fittings http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif....have to get a couple....the old ones have been in their since Tommy was a young man http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif...ran into a couple of other little things like: petcock on radiator doesn't work...just spins...I guess it's stripped...so off to the shed. By the way, those tower clamps are a pain in the ***....once there on for awhile they are tough to loosen up. Got as far as putting the 5 blade fan back on....next trip I'll try to button it up and then on to cleaning the disc brake hardware and more detailing.

WILMASBOYL78

Yes it is...there are some flat head type pipe plugs in the holes...these are original dated manifolds from the car...they were in the trunk along with the smog pump when I bought it http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif...now all I need is the plumbing.

Tom, the self threaded bolt looks correct for the negative cable. I believe they had the anchor on the head of them. I have also seen the negative cable bolted to the motor, pass. side. The assembly manual shows both ways but I think technically it bolts down on the motor for the big block. Also it should have the "U" shaped holder/bracket for the two heater hoses that bolts to the alt. bracket...

Car looks great!! Good luck at the NATS!! I would like to get my car there someday..

Tom, I would have to double check the assembly manual. I remember there were pictures showing it both ways. Mine(70 car) is bolted to the alt. bracket just like you have yours. I don't have the assembly manual handy it is out in the garage. Tomorrow I can double check it. I'll bet Marlin knows for sure... Seems to me your right and I'm sure if I bolted mine to the alt. bracket I must have done so according to the assembly manual becuase I know I had it out when I was putting the alternator and my smog assembly back on the car..

Tom, on page #306 of the 1970 Nova assembly manual it shows the negative battery cable ground being bolted to the passengers side front of the block rather than to the alt. bracket. This shows it for the V8 396 engines.. But on page #307 it shows this cable being bolted to the alt. bracket also for the v8 396 motors. Like I said I remembered it being shown both ways. I have seen it both ways on restored cars.. I guess either way is correct.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Look on the bottom of those pages for a revision date & notation Rich..
1970 Chevelle Big Blocks batteries started off being grounded at the block up until 10/31/69,then afterwards they received a special bolt/washer & cable to be attached at the upper Alt.Bkt.from then on.
Most of the 1970 BB vehicles got the new 1970 design upper Alt.Bkt. with the 3rd hole to accept this, but the assemblers continued to ground the Batts at the block, even though the Bkt. hole was there waiting for it.It took awhile for workers to understand it was now more time/cost effective & safer to start grounding these there.

I saw one a couple of years ago at a dealership in Pa. How did that thing work? Did the light get brighter as the fluid went down?

Mr70
01-15-2008, 07:27 AM
Basically A styrofoam float followed the level of the windshield washer fluid.
A paddle having a green & red lens on top of it would shift in front of a dimly lit bulb. When the level was low the color red would illuminate. When it was full, the color green would illuminate back into the sight lens mounted under the dash, notifying the driver of this. All this via a fiber optic line.
This option actually had 3 different designs, all varied on what time period throughout 1970 you received it in.
You could order it seperately as RPO CD-2,or with the Auxillary Lighting group as ZJ-9.

Thanks for the info! I guess that wasn't too accurate on a bumpy road, but hey it was early technology. Cool. Just like the traction dispensing compound option that wasn't too popular on the Camaro's. I have only seen one of those units in a Camaro.

Mr. Chevy
01-15-2008, 09:17 AM
Jed, that windshield washer monitor light unit was a one year stint only for 1970. Chevy realized later that those things would freeze up in the winter time and the float assemblies would crack. I guess there were a lot of unhappy chevy owners who returned their cars to the dealerships after this happened for a warranty on the part so they scraped the idea for 1971..
