http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif Not exactly. The reserve is not just what the seller wants it to be. He/she has to confer, cajole, and convince the auction house that the car can likely bring the reserve otherwise the auction house is likely to lose if the reserve falls far short. R & S is big into promoting reserve auctions to alay the fears of their customers (as compared to BJ) and they take setting the reserve very seriously. They are generally good at it and hence have been able to sell alot of cars at a lot of money.

Am no pro, but I did not think this was permitted.
Something seems a little fishy here. #1 $440,000 bid, and #2 No sale. If legit, what would a documented, converted, Gold Spinner '68 Yenko Camaro bring? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Forgive my ignorance but what exactly is an unconverted Yenko?
I think it was along the lines of this L-78 Camaro was delivered brand new to Yenkos lot and supposed to be waiting for a 427 transplant in 1968,(according to Yenko VIN records),but Kenny Ross Chevrolet wanted the car so Don sent it to them as is back then.
It never did get the 427 transplant from the Yenko Mechanics and stayed a 396/375HP car at Kenny Ross Chevrolet.
The late Tom Billigen soon bought it brand new from them..

To be specific on the above response - its an L78 car. Besides being an L78 car - it was ordered under the special program 9737 - so it received several special items from the factory for the Yenko only cars, MV stamped motor, 140 speedo, extra large sway bar, larger front brakes and suspension and the special trim tag that all yenkos have. Regular production L78 cars do not have these items, only the 70 planned Yenko Cars have these items.

I don't think the Magic Miror trim tag is exclusive to Yenko cars in 68. I have parted out a few 68 Camaros with the tag and know there was nothing special about them, only the trim tag...Wish I saved a few for referance.

I believe the magic mirror tag was also export required as well, so if it was an export camaro, you would also see this. Export did not need to qualify for emissions as i understand.
Maybe the ones you parted out that had the magic mirror tag were the some of the remaining missing 4 ??

Nope.....I was on to this 25 years ago and yes I knew what a Yenko was. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif My friend had a 68 with this tag and I would often compare his to mine. His started out as a 327 glide and was later converted to a 396( not by Yenko ) ...His was a early 68 car, it had the Astro door glass in it. Mine is a 07E car. Magic tags often appear later in 68 (Yenko build dates ).Mine is one of the last built in 68 without this tag, built along side those that have it.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif True, the Yenkos had them. That much is known..but..it's just as hard finding a "normal" 68 with them as it is finding a Yenko. Why couldn't I find a Yenko? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif You can come up with a bunch rational reasons why Fisher might use that tag, but they don't make sense when you consider Magic Mirror being the main difference. To my knowledge there is nothing different about 68 Yenko paint. Converted or not. It's not a 9737 thing.Export tags are different. I think it may have something to due with a type of batch order, or possibly some other internal quality tracking related to the paint supplier or finish.Something triggered the need for that tag. I'd bet the farm that, other than by chance, it had nothing to do with Yenko.

I thought the export and Yenko tag for 68 were the same? The reason you and Sam and Carl from Chicago had such a good time Sat. night was because I lent you my private waitress, Bionca. Seriously it was a blast. I had to come home to recuperate.

I'll dig for the pic...I think it was one of the export cars that had sunroof... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif I thought export cars are usually not legal to register in the US? Does not make sense for these Yenko cars to have them if that is the case...Yenko did the conversions..140 mph speedos were legal..What's the connection ? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif I'm starting to wonder why the Chevrolet Div. and Detroit Mich notation..Again, special order or something ....Export may just be a coincidence as well..

Now i know why Dana asked us if we had a bunch of singles on us when he let us in the bidding area http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif. Yes the export and yenko tags are the same - the magic mirror was also supported by the ACC stamp also on the trim tag.

I spoke too soon on the export being different....I can't confirm that. I was thinking of the "Made in Canada" tag pictured in the Fisher Body books... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif I did find a neat picture of a 200KPH export speedo. I thought I saved a pic of the tag also.
What I do find interesting about this tag is the similarity to the 59-64 "second design" tag. Same design of tag, but, the difference being Style and Trim are now ST and TR. In the CBTN book it mentions using this tag on certain Chevrolets thru 66 even though a third and fouth design were introduced in 64.I don't know a thing about 59-64 Chevy's ....Maybe Vern has some insight on the various tag useage early on.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
I don't recall codes following the ACC on these 68 tags...Do any of the known 68 Yenkos show a code?

The MM tag does not have the disclaimer that the vehicle conforms to all applicable laws or whatever the std tag says... that I believe is why most people have agreed that it was used on "export" cars and because the MV coded L78 was built in such a small number and most likely was not emmission's certified the MV cars also recieved the MM tag.
This is my take based on what I have read over the past 10 years or so... this and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee... but not at a Starbucks!

I think they probably knew that the 427 was going in and wouldn't pass smog with the L78 readings. I had a low mile 425hp 66 Vette and couldn't legally get it to pass smog when the laws here still applied. I sold it because I thought they would tighten the law and they abolished it, I still regret that one.

I met the lady that owned that non converted car while at a car show in wisconsin. I had a feeling she wanted more than what the final bid was. I myself did not understand why a non converted car would be worth so much, but this thread has helped a bit.
I heard lately about a red red 67/68 yenko that surfaced, has that gone to auction anywhere lately? My friend mentioned it to me when we could have went and looked at it, it started privately at 300K then went 500-700K, way out of our price range ..had a one over repaint, but was low milege..and the color was supposidly rare..pretty sure it was red red. Just curious.

Before bidding began a few told me that her reserve was 225k. During the bidding, I was told her reserve was set 500k. I do know this, the auction house did not attempt to convince her to lift her reserve when it hit over 400k. If she changed her mind and raised her reserve, then she decided to go home with the car, no matter what it bid. My $0.02. Ed talked to her for a while right after...what did you think happened?

I believe the magic mirror tag was also export required as well, so if it was an export camaro, you would also see this. Export did not need to qualify for emissions as i understand.
Maybe the ones you parted out that had the magic mirror tag were the some of the remaining missing 4 ??

I was helping Tom do research on this car when he bought it the 2nd time.
We thought it had something to do with Yenko because of the 140 speedo.
Some info on the 1968 Yenko Camaros and some ads were found in files that came from Don’s office. This is where I found a small end-of-year sale ad with the hi po Camaros for sale.
Two 427 Super Camaros, One Rally Green and Five Corvette Bronze 396 375hp hi po Camaros with 140 speedo, special front suspension, spoilers, wide ovals, etc.
We think that either Kenny Ross Chevrolet bought some from Yenko or did some type of dealer trade.
On the magic mirror tags.
I don’t think they are export tags.
Found some pictures of Camaro export tags but not like the magic mirror tags.
Did find some early Chevy tags that look the same as the magic mirror tag blanks.
The info is stamped different but the blank’s stampings appear similar if not the same.
On the emissions law theory.
I would say it’s not correct because Don had the 1968 427 Super Camaros emission certified.
The Yenko paperwork said it has “US Gov approved smog control” and one ad said it was the only 1968 427 Camaros to have it.
The standard 1968 Camaro trim tag blank has a statement about meeting Federal Safety laws not emissions.
I thought that maybe they did not use the standard 1968 Camaro trim tag blank because the 140 speedo may void the Federal Safety claim but not sure.
I didn’t find any Yenko info about it so it’s another theory.
top tag is 1962 bot tag is 68 Yenko
the standard 1968 Camaro trim tag

Thanks for your input. It is amazing how much is not known about these cars. With a company the size of GM the fact that this kind of stuff slipped out shows you that a few performance minded people really worked hard to get these kind of cars made. If the export tags are different then it makes the 68's even more unique. I posted on the Camaro site a long time ago that the 68's had special trimtags and I got slammed because they came back saying that the tags were nothing more than export tags. Does anyone have a pic of an export 68 tag? Thanks again I appreciate all the info I get from this site. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Joe, thanks for the post. I know I'm not going crazy thinking these things myself.....On the 140 speedo, I don't believe it would make a difference. I don't think the Police specials with calibrated speedos and for that matter the 69 9737's would use a different tag for that reason. Chryslers used the 150mph in there cars....Federal law,doubtful.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Yenko would have been the only source for that copo option in 68, right? So if you can link the parts to the car...
I think it would be easier to validate a converted 68 though. JMO
NICB would show if the car went to Yenko.
Some 68 Firebirds had 160mph speedo so I guess it was not a safety problem
As far as I know only Yenko's have turned up with 1968 COPO 9737 but I guess you never know.
The ad just documents that Yenko had six 396 375hp Camaros for sale late in the year, with 140 speedo and other special hi po stuff. The ad also had the color listed.
The next step was to get NICB but not sure if Tom ever got it.
He did have the original 396 with MV code that is also only known to have gone to Yenko

Who knows? For a time is was thought that Fred Gibb was the only one to get ZL-1s, and according to Dale Berger, they received a '68 L-78 Auto Nova, same as the Gibb 50. When cornered, Chevrolet had to allow dealers to order the same as the others. Case in point, in 1969, Don Yenko wanted an exclusive to the COPO, but word filtered out to other dealers.

Not all the 68 Yenkos had the COPO 9737. Thats been also proven. The YS8002 car that was the demo car did not have any of the COPO parts mentioned including the special tag. That car is the single most photographed car by Yenko in 68. It was the prototype the rest were built after. We are restoring this car and I will post some of its unique features in the SCW forum soon..BKH

Joe, did you ever get a good picture of the ad you mention from the yenko dealership on the 6 cars? You sent me a picture a while back taken from a camera and it was hard to read when you blow it up.
Id sure like to have a better picture if its available?
Considering the timing of the cars in the ad, we assumed my Rallye Green car is the one mentioned as its a late 68 car like Toms. I have also discussed with all the owners on my car (all PA guys) and the orig owner confirmed that my car was bought new from Yenko Chevy.

I still go back to the 59-64 Chevrolet tags...In the CBTN book it states that this tag was also used till 66 in Chevrolets produced in a BOP plant..( I'm not sure what that means exactly...but I think it is relevent) These bodys were marked for a reason. How many orders did Don make in 68? I'm thinking a batch order again. Why would Fisher need this tag? The 140 speedo? Wrong. They didn't install it, Chevrolet did. So, Don orders the cars...body numbers assigned at Fisher..sent thru to Chevrolet..They have to assemble the 140 speedo in a sea of 120's.....along with the 9737 stuff. This batch was run and tagged together to identify a "difference"...Has anyone seen a 68 Yenko Broadcast sheet? Was the tag used to identify the necessary items needed by Chevrolet? The ACC on the tag leads me to belive it. They used some form of it on the 67 tags for accessory codes. Why not use it again for variations on the 68 stuff? Hence the Magic Mirror tag with ACC.. Does anyone have body numbers for the 68 Yenkos? The 07E cars seem to all be pretty close.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Didn't that certification actually list the MV coded motor, and not the 427 conversion? I think that discussion was trying to determine if the MV motor was a factory installed 427 but it appears to be the COPO 396/375 motor.
