http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I was BSing with a friend last summer and asked if he knew where i could find a period 396 for my Z11 and he says he has the perfect motor for it. I ask him what it is and he says its a 375/396 out of his dads old nova. A few days later i go over to have a look-see at the motor and sure enough, it's legit. The block has already been boiled+prepped, stock bore, pistons, rods, refurbished heads, matching alum. intake, even has the original cam! I ask what he wants for it and he says he'll have to ask his dad. I didn't want to push it on the motor, so i asked about the rest of the car. He takes me out to the garage and in the corner sits a dark blue nova hiding under a cover. It could really use at least one quarter due to rust in the bottom edge, bu the rest of it's straight & clean. It's all there. How should i go about getting this car without blowing it?! I don't have the money or room right now but sheesh! What do you guys think this would be worth? Thanks for any feedback.

Be honest and tell him the car and motor should stay together and see where that leads to. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

My thoughts are to maybe buy the motor, store it, then pounce on the car when the time is right.

Where did Nickey come into the picture?

In my excitement i didn't tell you that my buddy told me the car was from Nickey. I'm trying to get ahold of him this weekend yet to get more details on the history of the car.If i find out more you'll be the first to know.

Does it have any documentation?

Good luck. I'm sure I'm biased, but, an L78 sold at Nickey is certainly a desireable car, even more so with the original motor.

If he's really your friend then you should be honest with him about the value of the car. Don't try to steal it from him. If he's really your friend maybe your honesty will pay off and he'll sell you a really cool car at a fair price. Just my .02, Ed

You should try to resist the temptation of the "take advantage of the situation gods," IMO. It's one thing to have a friend who's wanting to sell right away because he needs cash quick (for whatever reason).
I make sure that is what they REALLY want to do, and that I am giving them exactly what they want, so there is no seller's remorse later that will cause bad feelings. There's not much worse than a brick through your pane glass window when the guy finds out he's been taken major league advantage of. Just my .02US.

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif You and about 12,000 of your closest friends Mike! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I would agree that honesty is your best approach, and that every effort should be made to keep the car and the engine together. Good Luck!

Totally Agree. What ever you can do to keep the car & engine together, is so much easier now then say a few yrs from now when they are physically seperated and 2 different owners.... Goog Luck. Hope you can land it. Bob

Its refreshing to see so many have taken this point of view. That's one more reason I like this site so much!

Good luck!!

I agree with the no taking advantage rule myself as far as friends are concerned.....

But don't give me the b.s. that if someone could buy a Nickey car for dirt cheap they would'nt do it themselves. Sure being friends with somoene is different, and honesty should prevail, but if it is just word of mouth yeah, I think people would get it dirt cheap if they could.

The friend knows what the car is and i'm sure he knows its worth, but, the car belongs to his father and the dad told my friend that he was'nt getting the car in the will. His other son (who isn't even into cars!)is supposed to get the nova. Anyways, i talked to my friend today and he says his dad did buy it new right from Nickey solely for street racing, so he removed any outside/visual clues as to the cars potential. Yes the father still has all the original documentation for the car. My buddy told me his dad might sell the motor out of it because he has a 70 Chevelle 454 he wants to put in it. So should i feel bad if the dad sells me the motor? I don't know. I agree the car should stay together (which is why i would want it!)but if the dad is in the know...why should i let some non-enthusiast schmuck get his hands on that motor?

I would buy the motor at any cost and then work on getting the car in the future. At all cost, keep the motor and car together.

Find the owner another engine to use for his Chevelle and buy the whole magilla in one shot, sounds like everybody would win
