That's normal. There should not be paint under the hinges bec/ the lid was painted while installed on the car. The back edge never gets a lot of paint bec/ it's too difficult to get the gun at the right angle.

This on has a lot less paint than most I've seen. None have enough, but I tend to think this has less as it's a paint delete, and wasn't painted on the line. You'd think that it would be a better paint job because of that, but appears to be worse. And I honestly can't find any primer. It looks like they shot right over the bare metal. :dunno

Interested to know if the original trunk lid stickers will be left in placed or removed then replaced, or how that will be handled?
Thanks!

If you paint it, you'll have to replace the tags. It has a few scratches, but it could be left for "patina".

I agree, special paint is the more correct term. There were rumored back in the day to have been paint delete cars that were painted at the dealership. Other than perhaps bodies in white, I don't know of any that have been documented that way.
It appears that this car did spend time in the paint shop for something as that tag appears to me to address a paint issue, but does not state rework. The lack of the tag addressing an area of the paint on the car is what makes me think the majority of it was shot off line. If we hung a rework tag on something at our plant, you had to specify what was wrong, and that it was rejected. This tag just says to send it to the paint shop. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

They wouldn't take special paint cars off-line, they were painted on-line with the other cars. They just cleared the guns and shot the special paint that was provided. And a container of that same paint went over to the Chevrolet side so they could paint the front clip.
Looks like that tag says SPECIAL on the one side - to note it was a special paint car. Neat find!

[/ QUOTE ]
Our first thought was that this color was cleared out of the guns before shooting the orange. The problem is, that Riverside gold is a Corvette only color in 69. That color should not have been on the line (if this is where the painting took place) as it was not a Nova color. We also thought maybe that with a -- paint code, it was ment to be this color, but this is the only area where this color is on the car. You can see the paint layers on the left qtr down to bare metal and It's orange.
We think maybe, that there was a mix code mistake. H/O (72) in my Dupont book shows (990) Lucite code 5021LM.
Riverside gold is (980) 5029L lucite Corvette only.
Perhaps they got the wrong color, shot the middle to clear what they had when they discovered it, shot the bottoms of the pillars with the orange, and blacked the edges with the same color that was used on the inner door window frames. If you look, you can also see there are a lot of areas with factory primer still showing that were not top coated with anything.
Now the other issue is that there are no factory studs for the Vtop. There were also no staples. The top was cut to fit around the molding clips. There is also no callout for a V top on the trim tag.
Until I removed the top, I was pretty sure this was a dealer installed top. Now I'm more inclined to believe this was a factory job. Perhaps the tag showing the car was sent to the factory body shop had more to do with the top install than the -- color.
We've sent pics to Brian H., and Marlin. I invite anyone to stop by and take a look. I'd like to find the answer to what we have here.
I personally believe we have A, or maybe more factory screw ups. But any help in solving this would be appreciated
Thanks, Schonye

I posed this question to my reps. He spent 1/2 a day weighing toner from both water and petro systems and there are to many variables to conclude which one weighs less.
As far as benefits, I believe some time in the near future most if not all shops will by law have to use water based product. Where we are located my boss chose to switch due to air quality permits. I've been spraying water for almost a year and it works and looks great. I don't see any down side to using it.

Well... if you look at pics of most cars that sit in that area, the calendar is turned to my favorite, Latisha. Mitch, the kid who has hung around the shop since he was about 12, and is now in auto body school, and aprenticing at Arnold's where Joe works, has to mess with me by changing the calendar to the lighter skinned girl, and changing my oldies radio station.
Maybe it has something to do with the first time I met his girl friend I mentioned that she looked nothing like Latoya who he had there the night before. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
And, I guess I'm old school in that a body shop, or welding shop really isn't complete without a girley calendar. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
And yes, that is the original BB radiator support. It does have a small wrinkle that needs massageing

Joe, I was all over your handy work on bbbenny's Nova this weekend. I wish I could come out and meet you guys in June. You do a real nice job! We might have to trade paint "stories" that is. Nice work!

Funny car guys use water based paint because it ends up being lighter, due to no primer/sealer needed I believe?
[/ QUOTE ]
I posed this question to my reps. He spent 1/2 a day weighing toner from both water and petro systems and there are to many variables to conclude which one weighs less.
As far as benefits, I believe some time in the near future most if not all shops will by law have to use water based product. Where we are located my boss chose to switch due to air quality permits. I've been spraying water for almost a year and it works and looks great. I don't see any down side to using it.

I ran across this while reading some drag racing stuff:
"Jerry Sievers Paint -N- Place says he saves approximately 1/3 of weight on his funny cars painting for the pros (John Force, Del Worsham, etc.), by using water based paint and decals – lighter colors (white) without pigment are the lightest."

Hmmmm http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif , those look familiar. Remember http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif to keep a minimum of 25 psi in those Gabriels (max of 200 http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif). http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
P. S. as per usual Dennis nailed the original sticker details (Gabriel changed their design some time ago) http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif
