I wasn't planning on selling this car but I found another car that I have a very small window to commit to. This is a 1970 Camaro SS396 L78 car with GM of Canada docs. It has the #'s matching motor, a 1965 dated M21, and a late 70 12 bolt rear that is not original. It appears to have the original 3.55 posi in the rear though. Car is original Classic Copper with the white/black cloth interior. Car runs strong. Seats were recovered in 2006. New clutch, exhaust, rear brakes last year. Comes with a set of original P02 wire wheel covers as identified on the documentation. Body is rock solid with what appears to be all original panels. Floor is solid with original red oxide primer showing under the grease/dirt and in great shape. Tall spoiler was added as this is a very early 1970 Camaro. Feel free to contact me for more details or pictures. $49K obo.

Wow. Are 70 L78 approaching that "dime a dozen" status? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good luck Jeff.

Hey Dan, buy it!

Does anyone know the production numbers on the 70 L-78?

DarrenX33

Only 600 of them making it pretty much the rarest 2nd gen Camaro. Mostly 4 speeds. I'll just leave that one hanging... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Almost http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif, the 70 Z COPO at less then 500 made is probably the rarest.

BUT, there is a great argument that the L78 is more desireable. And this one has GM Canada Docs to boot.

Nice car for a fair price, and I wish I had the room, or it'd be next to my 70 Z Copo! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Is this the L78 that was for sale about 4 years ago from Canada? I remember that one was black as well? Member here or at TC? I regret not buying that car at that time.

DarrenX33

I never heard that number, how is that 500 documented?

Hear that Jeff? Your car has the spoiler so its even rarer. Raise the price. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif - http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif
From what I have been told:
500 was the number that was "supposed" to be made to satisfy race rules. It is believed that chevrolet "fudged" and only produced enough to convince the judges at a race in Texas that they were "production". They placed some in the parking lot and some in dealers.
Ford was complainng at a previous race that the 70 Z28 did not meet spec with the spoiler as it was not production.
Chevy "passed" and the judges let the Z race.

So, there would never have been any 1970 L78 COPO cars made, it was a Z thing...... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

AGAIN, not to take anything from this car, but the spoiler is incorrect. But, spoilers are easy to chage!

Great car, REAL car,and a fair price.....

So then 500 isn't a concrete number. That could be 1000 or any number considering the only way to really validate one is by buildsheet or original order form (maybe window sticker http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif) and not many have survived with their cars. And there is no list of VIN numbers as with other COPO cars...

Authenticating one by inspection would be next to impossible considering that there are no key identifiers on the spoiler. And drilled holes are well, drilled holes. And everyone installed the 3 piece spoiler back in the day. So without an actual figure seems like the number is unknown. I'm no expert and I am not discrediting the cars, just seems logical.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Hey Jeff, Its been a while since we talked. That must be a really cool car you are looking at if you are giving up the L78 for it....I'm really curious...I know its probably too early to let the hat out of the bag, but I wanna know !!! I live very nearby and I cant imagine what car you are looking at...do tell!!! Good luck on the sale...and better luck on the new purchase!!!

BTW, how's the JL-8 coming?? I'd like to check it out sometime as mine is getting worked on at the moment too!!

I have seen a figure of 600 for the L78. I would have to find out where I got that number but It was recently I saw it.

I remember thinking when I saw it that "those are rare"

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Rich I just to bump things up another knotch, I read on the Automotive History site (take it with a grain of salt) that there were only 10 COPO's produced. I dont know if it was refering to a COPO RS/Z28 or all of them. I am trying to get a hold of the site sponsor to find out where the info came from See link

There was a documented orange '70 L78 Camaro in the east end of Toronto but I think it went south of the border 3-4 years ago.

Whttp://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gifW...what a sweet piece Jeff!!!
Good luck on the sale also w/ whatever you're pursuing!.

Real nice to see the GM Canada docs for a '70 L78 car too...probably the only time anyone here would ever wish for an automatic trans...lol?!.

You guys do know that the W84-extra fuel option was really so us Canadian lot-jockeys could test drive the cars when they got unloaded from the trucks here...right?!.

Sure love to hear more on your JL8/Crossram car Jeff!.

Maybe I'm reading more into this than I should but it seems that every time this "Spoiler" subject comes up things get wierd.

The L78 is a great car i'd give my left nut to have one.

1 or 10,000 it makes no difference to me.

The COPO 9796 is somewhat of a mystery but from the bit's and pieces of information which can be attributed to credible scorces the number looks like its between ? on the low side and 533 on the high side. This is not written in a book somewhere but at the time of the Monterey Trans Am race GM had claimed that 8200 Z's were produced already with the small spoilers, since there was a total production run of 8733 on the 70 Z and assuming that all the rest of the Z produced were COPO's (Highly Unlikely) that would make the total COPO production 533 at best.

We know that it was not until the Dallas race where Chevy pulled a fast one on the SCCA by bolting the newly designed spoilers on to cars at local dealers and parking them in the track parking lot. The Dallas race was rained out and the cars never ran.

Regardless,

Both cars are great and should be looked at that way.

Maybe Im missing something http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Actually the stuff was written in a piece by BY CAMERON A. WARREN and JAMES T. CROW for Road and Track Magazine

PS GREAT CAR JEFF GOOD LUCK ON THE SALE sorry for the highjack

The 500 number was the minumum to consider it a production car, and GM did not want to even produce that many for this particular application.

And yes, there is a way to tell if the spoilers were the non mass produced 9796 spoilers. Of course, that still does not prove that that spoiler came on that car. Yes, holes are holes.

BUT, there are at least three of us out there with build sheets now.

L78 or 9796AA, and that recent Harrell car, seems like the second gens are hitting the market. Real point is that they are still undervalued and a bargin, IMO!

It looks like the other car probably isn't going to happen so I might just have them pull this ad because I don't plan on selling if I don't buy the other car.

Jeff,

What is the extra fuel option? Is it a larger tank?

Well, I just had some unexpected pet bills pop up. Our dog is almost 13 and just spent several days in the hospital. I'm now looking to sell the car to help pay off some loans. Partial trades considered on a 67-73 Camaro. Dropping the price to $46K.
