View Full Version : BEST OF BALDWIN MOTION

On November 30, 1968, Joel Rosen sat down with Roberto Schneider, the grandson of a wealthy Mexican industrialist to fill an order for one of the most significant muscle car purchases in Baldwin Motion history. In the spring of 1969, Motion Performance completed two heavily optioned Phase III cars according to this order. They were built to specification with no regard to cost. They were then placed in storage on Long Island until the fall of 1970 while the President of Mexico, Gustavo Diaz Ordaz, personally endeavored to secure permits to get them into Mexico. The request to the president of Mexico came from the Governor of Chihuahua, Oscar Flores. The Governor's daughter was to marry Roberto Schneider, and the permits which were exceedingly rare and difficult to obtain, were to be the actual wedding present to the groom.
The two SS427 cars included a Camaro and Chevelle. Many are aware of the Camaro as it was part of the Otis Chandler collection. With the help of Joel Rosen, I was able to locate the Chevelle. As there had been extensive rumor and conjecture, I figured I would do my best to find Roberto Schneider in Mexico and establish a clear history. I started with a private investigator in El Paso, Texas who traveled into Chihuahua Province, Mexico. Roberto was finally located on his 90,000 acre ranch and I subsequently made contact. Roberto extended a personal invitation for me to visit and I chartered a plane to take me into Central Mexico.
It was during the three days I spent with him that I learned of the history discussed above. It is just a fraction of the amazing history of these two cars as well as his life. In fact, were not much of it documented with original photos, it is almost unbelievable. Roberto sent me home with personal family photo albums.
The Chevelle history is documented with: uninterrupted ownership history back to Roberto Schneider, interim ownership by Joel Rosen, (and his letter of course), original photos of the brand new car in front of Motion Performance, photos of the car as found 20 years later retaining it's original paint, Motion paint scheme, it's original Torque Thrust wheels, etc and it's original build sheet showing shipping to Baldwin Motor Company.
Nonetheless, my primary motivation for posting this information is to announce the invitation of the car to the Amelia Concours in Florida on the weekend of March 8th and 9th. The Chevelle will debut for the first time ever. In addition, it will be displayed hitched together with the Camaro in tow, just as it left Long Island almost 38 years ago in route to Texas. In fact, we will be using the very NMW tow bar used in September 1970 as it has been with the Camaro ever since. Much more to come...

That is a wonderful story, it will be great to see the Chevelle that Tom Johnson always talked about. Tom was a good friend of mine and to this day I still coach his grand daughters in Select Softball. I had the priveledge of driving the Green Motion car on several occaisions down the local Blvd. Even have some pics of it in Tom's Driveway. In his day he own a bunch of really neat cars and loved all muscle cars. I remember he said on many occasions that he wished he would have bought both cars in Mexico. Again great story.

What was the color combination on the chevelle? Exterior color combination and interior? Also, is the event at Amelia Island open to the public? I will be working in Charleston SC Wed Thur and Friday the week of the event, it would be stupid to be that close and not drive on down to Amelia Island to see that kind of history.

Thank you for sharing these incredible pieces of Supercar history next month. Too many of these cars are hidden away in private collections, never to be seen.
Do you have any future plans to show these cars again at other venues for those of us who can't make it to Amelia Island this year?
Again, thanks to you and all others on this Board who bring their cars out for all to enjoy. Your generosity is appreciated by many!!!! Jim

Here's a rear quarter shot. Note the NOS Cure Rides (Super-Bite suspension), one of the last sets JR had. The Torque Thrusts are the ones that were on the car when it left L.I.(15x8.5 backs 14x6 fronts); original GT mirrors. Multiple additional performance options beyond the PhaseIII SS-427 package. Car originally had a set of "Indy" red lines on it.

I restored the car to exact original specifications based on Joel Rosens' handwritten order invoice dated Nov 11,1968 and original photos of the car. Many of the Motion Performance parts are the last from Joel Rosens' personal inventory-all are true NOS.
I would like to thank Fred Eichorst, Joe Guerra, Bruce Hershberger and Phil Wojnarowski, all of whom were highly instrumental in the completion of this car. I also suspect Mockingbird and Xplantdad really never thought the car existed- http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

I was going about 120 the "first" time my hood popped on my 69 chevelle but was held by the "safety catch?". Scared the crap out of me. Got used to it, happened several times, not smart enough/no money for hood pins. Not too bright at 16 yoa, fly helicopters now so guess I haven't gotten any smarter over the years.

The hitch goes on this weekend. Also a rear antenna (came with 8-track/AM radio setup) and white sport stripes. Have a photo of the car just prior to leaving for TX in front of Motion Performance with the hitch installed. Also, interestingly it has the same NY Dealers plate on it that many of the magazine test cars used. One example is the Phase III Nova featured in Hot Cars May 1969.
do you have the original MP work order?
I am curious what parts are listed for carb, intake, dist, ign wires, etc?

I love how the chevelle write up refers to Joel Rose, really, the car gets into a concours show after 39 years and they don't know how to spell Rosen? Proof reading is worth every minute you spend on it, and worth 100 times the minutes you don't.
Andy, The RS emblems were put on regarding the original owner's intials, RS for Roberto Schneider. As far as the mis-spelling of Rosen's last name, the Amelia folks had around 400 cars. Nothing you can do to change that after it has been printed. A little mistake like that is totally understandable with this many cars.
These photos do not do justice to the quality of these cars. This is true muscle car history.
Enjoy,

Addressing a few items: The RS emblems represent Roberto Schneiders initials and were installed by Joel Rosen as a tribute due to the magnitude of the purchase and RS's family background. They are present in photos of the car new, and when found in the late 80's. I have all the original RS and 427 emblems the car was born with. This includes the front grill where the RS emblem has never been removed. In addition the original order invoice specifically calls for removal of all SS emblems.
As far as other stories, I have a series of photos chronicling Roberto's arrival on his 2nd trip to NY to pay the balance and take delivery. This includes a photo of JR prepping one of his open chambered Tahiti boats. RS was taken for one wild ride. He told me he actually hoped JR would back off. In the end he had to as the Long Island police in a helicopter stopped them for speed in excess of 100mph. JR was issued a $150 ticket.
And yes Sam I did kick the back end of the car on the golf cart path en route to the field but was respectful of the fairway unlike the Trans Am cars.

I've had several inquires about the wheels and tires. As I had previously posted they are the original Torque Thrusts that were on the car when it left LI in Sept 1970- 14x6s in front and 15x8.5s in the rear. The original order invoice shows "Special INDY tires $200.00". The original photos of the car new show red line tires with the above mentioned wheels. I believe the rears are L70s. To replicate as close to original as possible, I had Diamondback Classics custom fabricate them on bias ply L60x15s rear and F70x14s front. Bill Chapman at DB Classics only wanted to build them on a radial type tire but I wanted an original look. After some trial and error (some tires sacraficed) they came out great. They are great folks to work with. Bill informed me they will hold up just fine during a burnout and they are truly very close to what came on the car.

I had to bring this thread back!!! I just love the story and the cars!!
Did the "rest of the story" ever get told??? How about some of those old photos!!!
From the original post:
"It is just a fraction of the amazing history of these two cars as well as his life. In fact, were not much of it documented with original photos, it is almost unbelievable. Roberto sent me home with personal family photo albums."
Where was the Chevelle found? When did the original owner sell it?
Perhaps a new thread could be set up with the whole story and just the pics of the cars.
dreemz
02-01-2009, 08:59 PM
The original owner never sold either car. Each was given to one of Roberto's friends after he lost interest in the cars. The cars, contrary to popular belief, never were delivered to Mexico. He kept them in a parking garage across the street from the Gateway hotel in El Paso. When he would come up to visit El Paso from Chihuahua City or the ranch in central Chihuahua provence is when he would drive them. Most of the important pictures have been given to Marty Schorr to be published in the new book about the history of Motion performance. Marty is hoping the book will be out the 3rd quarter of this year. He has been putting alot of effort in the book and has secured a publisher.

Roberto proving to his friends did indeed have two Baldwin -Motion cars built. Remember these cars where held in storage on Long Island awaiting permits from the president of Mexico (Gustavo Diaz Ordaz) so that the cars could be bought directly into the country. Unfortunately, only one permit was issued and the cars never made it into Mexico. Additionally, the administration changed (President Luis Echavarria Alvarez) and Robertos' father-in-law, the governor of Chihuahua (Oscar Flores) did not have the same relationship with him

Here is a great story I discussed earlier. To celebrate the delivery of the two cars to Roberto, Joel took him out for a ride in his Motion modified Tahiti boat. If I recall correctly, it had an open chambered 454. They were nailed by the Long Island police in a helicopter at 100 mph shortly after this photo was taken(and given a $150 ticket). Roberto, actually told me that he was scared enough to tell Joel to slow down. In the photo Roberto is getting in the boat and JR is getting it running. The bandage on his foot is from a nail he had stepped on. To give you a further idea of how extreme this boat was, the Long Island Donzi dealer pressured JR to sell him the boat. He was unfortunately seriously injured when he crashed it and spent 3 months in the hospital. The boat was just another one of the radical machines engineered by JR.

I had the pleasure of seeing Mark's "dreemz" car tonight. It is truly one of the most radical, eccentric and gorgeous musclecars I've ever seen. INCREDIBLE!
Mark- thanks for the experience and hospitality. Enjoy that beast, Adam
