View Full Version : Talk to me about clutches

About to pull the trigger on a clutch kit for the Chevelle, considering the RAM musclecar series or powergrip clutch. I'm trying to stay away from the "box-buster" killer clutches like the Centerforces, etc., since I'd like to try to keep my Muncie intact for a while. I don't want anything that hits hard (i.e. on-off switch syndrome), and the street tires will be the fusible link in the system.

(Seriously considering a slipper clutch later on for some additonal track tuneability, but for now a street [/strip] gig will have to suffice.)

Whatever gets bolted to the flywheel will need to hold 600 real-world HP. (yes, I've got a few tricks up my sleeve waiting in the wings for the 496...but that's another subject)

Thoughts?...advice?...experiences?

Any help/input would be appreciated.

Thanks
Eric

There was a big discussion about clutches awhile ago---guess somewhere in the tech forum...

Ram Powergrips are great clutches and will be my choice in my next manual transmission car. Had a dual friction Centerforce in my Richmond 5 speeded LS-6 454 in my '55 Chevy and that was one unforgiving sumbitch. I mean it really engaged hard and I was really afraid of breaking that expensive, new transmission or rearend. A little bit of "give" or slippage can be a good thing.

Wait a second Tom, let me bring out the "big guns" for Eric here http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Now - will you think about an automatic?

I run a Centerforce dual friction clutch in my 67 Chevelle with a M20 660 case muncie and a 12 bolt with 3.73 gears. Very good clutch, soft pedal, and I haven't broken anything yet with about 25,000 hard street miles. I launch the car on slicks at the track at least once a month and still no issues.

Thanks. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Matt;

How much power are you pushing through it, and what does the car e.t.?

60' times?

Eric: I probably sound like a broken record, but all the guys in PS swear by the Centerforce...they're all on skinny, skinny tires, so there must be *some* give in it or else it'd be a spin-fest...not just the top runners running them, but top to bottom of the field. I can't remember *which* CF they're running, though...and we haven't put together a manual Pure Stock car (yet!) so all I know is what I'm told?! I'll rattle some of their cages, though...

Car is a 355 small block, pump gas, high winding (I shift the car at 7800 rpm). The only time I have run it at the track on slicks it went 12.52 @ 114 on motor with a 1.999 60' launching it at around 2500 rpm. If i launched it around 5500 It would be easily in the 1.6-.7 range. I do shoot nitrous through the motor though. I never have any WOT shift slippage issues at all. I have a video of it on street tires and slicks. Don't bash me for where the vids are taking place!!!!

Well, the clutch kit will be here tomorrow. I decided to go with the RAM "Powergrip" clutch kit and 30 lb Hays billet steel flywheel. We'll see how it turns out.

This is not a judgement, just some advise, I would take that off of your Myspace and delete it off this site. A DA would have a field day with that in court.

Spec Clutches are pretty good. A friend of mine was running a spec 3 in his full bolt on, stock internal 97 LT1 Z28 and ran a 11.70 @ 114. http://lsx.streetfire.net/video/cfa36b3c-d674-4564-8863-986101222244.htm

We were in Ireland a few years ago and noticed that the cars, even the BMWs, were all stick shift. Dale asked her elderly great aunt if they had any cars with automatic transmissions. The answer was, "Oh, they are for invalids." Apparently, the only only ones who drove automatics were those with physical handicaps that prevented use of standards. We had quite a chuckle. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

How did that powergrip work out for you? I need something similar for my 454 in my 72 Nova. Thanks.

John;

Still in the assembly process with the car, HOPE to have it up & running within the next couple of months. I'll report back once I've got it going.
