I did not post all the details on the car there was to much to tell. When anyone called this is what the condition of the car is. Originally bought in Oak Park IL out of Brigance Cheverolet sold by big "ED" himself. The 1st owner work as a service tech at the dealership, 6 weeks old he pulled the motor and trans out and sold it to his neighbor 8 houses away from his house. He still has the original motor today in Oak Park IL. The original trans is sold to a man in Barrington IL and he still has the original trans today. The original rear end is out of the car in my garage. The motor now in the car is a 1968 427 L-88 from a 1968 Corvette that came into the dealership for service for a knock sound, the 1st owner, then a service tech at the dealership, said it was a carbon knock that he fixed, but told the Vette owner it was blown so he then took the motor for himself and put it in his 1969 SS Nova when it was weeks old! The 1st owner lettered the car "Chevy Tuff II" and street raced the car on Harlem Ave in Oak Park IL since new. Thats why the car only has 19,500 miles on it. The condition of the orginal body is in original show condition, ZERO rust anywhere you look. Never hit! The interior is original 9 out of 10 condition, looks like never sat in seats. The carpet is the only replaced part inside cause he had a bolted in roll bar for show (2 bolts per post, not welded) The car was perfectly painted once in lacquer for the price of $18,000(have the receipt) cause of the hot rod lettering on the body panels. The 1st owner sold the car to his alley car buddy neighbor 2 houses away in Oak Park in the 80's and that is where the car is today. The engine compartment is in show condition I'll post picture from Saturdays pick up. Underneath is as good as the top. Just go drive or show the car, just needs Sunoco 110 race gas for the 560hp 12.5 comp 427 engine.
Again Thanks

Wow!! I live a stones throw away from Oak Park in Berwyn which it shares a border with! I have never heard of this car. PLEASE post some pics when you get a chance. What is the original owners name? I have done TONS of research on Brigance and Mr. Ed and maybe have heard of the guy especially if he worked there.
Who bought the car....wait I have a guess....at least I hope it was him! http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

The original owner on the dealers paper work was Merritt M. Lovett from 841 n. Kenilworth st. Oak Park IL and Mr."Ed" was the salesman that sold the car. Thats what on the dealers paper work.

Wish you would have let me come see it since i asked you about 3 times on thursday morning before 8:00 am. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif You kept asking me why didn't I want to pull the trigger on it over the phone, and I said since i live only 25 miles from you I would have to see it before I buy it over the phone. You where supposed to call me and give me a time. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif O well thanks for nothing

You said you" wanted to see the car this week end or before the other people come for the car this Sat." I told you about the very serious buyers committed to come out this weekend from Ohio, TX and Pa. I knew that who ever will see the car first will buy it. To good of a car a real deal car. I never ever ask anyone to pull a trigger, I just tell them how serious the condition of the car being sold. I'm sorry if you took it the wrong way. I guess if you wanted to really buy the car you would have told me I'll be there today like the buyer of the car did, he's also a local person. What do they say" if you snooze" I forgot the rest.
But the good news is the guy who bought the car wanted other parts that came with the car and the 427 Corvette motor. He told me he thinks he will sell the car after he pulls the motor out.

You actions speak for themselves it sound like you are very sour you didn't jump on this car. It's always the case when your looking at something and scared to make a move, but when some one else with knowledge and balls makes a move, any one can cry foul. I should of guessed when I seen your post looking for a real deal Nova and I sent you a message First on Wed and you dragged your feet and that you have been looking and passing on cars for such a long time,I should of known that I was playing in the minor leagues.

Everybody should just take a deep breath. The car is sold to a great member here who was ready & willing to act quickly. IMO, the initial ad & explanation could have been handled better, but, the "stuff" flying back and forth post sale does no good for anyone.

Just curious but if the car had wrong motor, wrong trans, dana rear end, completely repainted, replaced carpet, had roll bar etc?? the mileage is really not a factor.. and sold for near 50k???? Whats a #s one worth with paperwork??I think the one wilma sold was a steal then http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Rob id hold out they will be comming out of the wood work soon http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Race cars are more desirable, look at the prices some of these vintage drag muscle cars bring in at the auctions. A factory hemi Cuda or a "Sox & Martin" hemi cuda? Race cars are in! After all a 327 Car doesnt compare to a 427 in value and a 427 car is more like a race car. So I would take a 427 race car with a story, than another 427 car that is no different than all the other 427 cars out there. How many of the same 427 cars can you see, the only difference is the color and the condition. The story behind a car is what makes them individually unique. I'd rather have a "Nickey" 427 car that was race with some race history than any other factory big block car. This is my opinion.

I was just questioning the market price really not your perctiular car to get a feel of what they are bringing ,Iam looking at a all #s matching 69 396/375 car that has docs and also real low mile car .I thought the $$ was a bit high but maybe its very reasonable after all... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif I agree with your statement about the 427 cars but are u saying this is such a car??
1969l78
03-01-2008, 10:57 PM
Anyone can put a 427 in a car and then say it was an old race car and stuff like that, but those other race cars you talk of are few and far, thats why the bring big money. I would rather have an all original big block survivor then some car with a 427 and some iffy story behind it, but thats just me http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

You know with that amazing story I think the L88 is right at home in the Nova! I would keep it as an L88 Nova with a hell of a tale!!
Price sure seems fair. Car looks fantastic, engine is worth a fair amount of coin on its own merits.
If you are going to swap out the L88 what is it going into?? Got a spare L88 Vette lying around that need an engine?

If I read this correctly, this Nova has an original #'d L88 Vette engine in it now? To the owner of that Vette, I'd say that the Nova is a nice freebie in this deal, as the original engine is worth close to a $50K bump, is it not? It sounds like the buyer has the perfect trading material (dated L78) to trade for the original engine. The car is cool as hell as well. Sounds like a slam dunk if everything goes right.

Thanks guys after getting the car home and really looking it over it really is a very cool car. I bought it to put the engine in my 1967 300 post chevelle. I am really not sure what I want to do with it yet sell the body, put a date coded motor in it or just leave it as is. I already have a few people that would like to buy the body minus drivetrain.
I realize the 19k miles doesnt make it a survivor but having all original perfect sheet metal and interior to me makes it the next best thing.
I want to thank Strat for all his help buying this car without him it would not of happened.

Like I said this car was and still is a street drag car! It looks like a sleeper but those 427 badges catch your eye. Remember this car also has a 5.13 gear Dana 60 rear end to handle a the brute HP! The picture that -post sedan- posted is one of the original pictures I have of the car in 1971 lettered up saying "Nova II Tuff" on the side with the drivers name and with local sponsors of the car. This was a street drag car(hence the low miles) that the last owner was beginning to bring back to street trim. On my previous posts I said "I think that a race car is more valuable than a regular car " I wish the owner would of left this car in race attire. How kool would that be, a one of a kind Nova. Thats why the car was re-painted to remove all the lettering, but I would like to have kept it that way and tell everyone at the shows about its story and how it ended getting the 427 motor and a Dana 60 rear. Not many cars can give a story like this one can. This car is truly a one of a kind!!! Worth every penny if not more cause of it history and paper work. Mr. Nickey came by today to see the paper work on the car and said "this is one of the best paper work he's seen" Originally sold in Oak Park IL ,owned in Oak Park IL by only 2 owners since 1969 that raced and showed that Nova! Now it's finally left it's crib and in John's garage. The man with knowledge an the cahunas. Wow what a real deal!
I'll try to post some pictures of the car on my next posts.

[/quote
Thats why john bought the Nova, he wanted the drive train. The great condition Nova car with premium paper work was a bonus to him.

I and some others know how dishonest you are- if you want to use baseball terms--you remind me of Roger Clemens, (I was not at Jose Canseco party), but as time goes on truth starts to leak out. But being a car fan I would love to see motor pics. The part that bothers me is dishonesty, not the fact that I did not get the car, I have stated all along I am looking for a matching numbers drive line car with doc's, so if you would have done your homework then you would know what I am lookin for. You mislead people from day one with the generic description of the car in the first post to all the garbage you post up till today. I can go to bed at night knowin I am an honest guy. Every person including YOU that inquired about the Nova,I told them in the first minutes or sentences of any phone conversation that the cars original drive train is not in the car and I have NO ACSESS to it, but know where it is. Motor in Oak Park, trans in Barrington, rear end in my garage. Yes the description is vague but the phone conversations were VERY DETAILED to every one who called. If you are looking for a # matching car, on the phone you knew the car was not right away in first minutes of conversation. So why all your griping?
Who knows, only you know. Maybe to cover your tracks on not being a a real buyer and all your friend are asking you why didn't you buy the car. Enough said, if you feel ok, I think I'll try to post some more picts, but don't come crying now the car was sold and picked up.

In the old vintage picture of the Nova "NOVA II TUFF" The guy in the blue shirt by the Nova is the original owner and the guy in the white shirt by the Impala is the second owner that I bought the Nova from. The second owner is still alive and well has all the history and live across from the alley from the original owner. The Original owner ,his best friend and car buddy has now died and the car was willed to the 2nd owner. I picked up the car from him. So there's no iffy anything about this car, he knows every minute of the cars life, he was one of his original budies that went to Brigance Chevy to pick this Nova up when the special ordered Nova was picked up fo

Here is the story of the Engines.(Owner 1 & owner 2) 1 I told you sold the orig engine to to his buddy down the alley when 1 got the 427 Vette motor when the car was weeks old. 2 had the impala with a small motor. When 1 wanted to go faster with a bigger motor (think a built 468) 2 told me he got the 427 Vette motor and put it in the Impala. When 1 died and willed the Nova to 2 , 2 put the 427 Vette motor back in the Nova(took out the 468) and bought a 1999 502 crate motor for the Impala. Can u guy understand what I'm trying to explain here?

#2 loves his Impala, had it for 45 years, but when #2 died he promised he would put the 427 Vette motor in the Nova and clean up the car. One more thing #1 asked before his passing was to bring the car to his grave and lay down the best rubber it could. So #2 is pretty much done with #1 requests and I was finally abel to acquire the car. I knew of this car for some time but wasn't able to close the deal, till now.

That's really not a rosewood wheel....this is the woodgrain trim (really decals) that was an option on 69 cars...I have seen it in lots of Camaros and full size (I think)...don't believe it was really an option for Novas...not much work to install the wood grain on a std. black wheel.

I told John to think about the future of the car. Which way to go.
Does he go back to factory specs. Or does he keep the drive train in(427 m-22 dana 60) and go nostalgia drag look. Old drag car style is less work, just add Lettering, 10 inch Cragars and headers with some cherry bomb exhaust! Original factory look can be alot of labor for John. Plus drag car style can be fun at the strip!

I'm just showing you on how popular these vintage drag cars are going to get. I think Mike was and still is ahead of the curve with his car collection of old race cars he's just playing the super big leagues with his type of cars though. I really feel with a nostalgia race cars you don't have to worry to much if the header bolt has the correct style head markings on it. But then there are the purists which is also great to look at but now we just compare condition and tell them whats wrong on there car or whats right.

Light up your flaming arrows http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif IMHO, unless the drag car has some sort of notoriety, ala record holder of some sort, famous owner, driver or tuner, it's just another driveway creation - and should be restored back to it's stock condition. Maybe have some 1/4 panel vinyl graphics made up saying "CHEVY II TUFF",that can be applied & removed at area shows around here and see if anybody is drawn to that name at first. If that stimulates a few stories/pictures/super 8 movies showing up,then turn it up full bore to it's racing glory.
If not, take it back to the assembly line.

Old nostalgic drag cars are the new wave, this thread is 140 pages long!
You can see some Arnie Beswick and Grumpy's toy's I think on page 2.
I'll throw my opinion in too. I have a 70 Nova with a 427 in it. Not quite an L88, but close. It is a blast to drive, so I would lean towards leaving the L88 in the car. Do what has to be done to get the original driveline and store it. When (if) you ever get tired of the big incher, put it back to all original. In the meantime, beat the crap out of it.

"How many people are going to ooooh & aaaah over anobnoxiously lettered up, hillbilly suspensioned, wanna be drag-star that nobody ever saw run"?
This statement can only be made by a guy that is to young to have lived the era or somebody who was not a car guy in his early days. When I seen that picture I had goose bumps not because of that car but because the memories it brought back. In the 70s you would see that all over, lettered cars cars that were jacked up so high they drove like crap and scarey to drive but that was the excitment about it.
That statement hillbilly lettering every body had there own taste and there own budget and it was all cool primered or mint everbody enjoyed each others cars and always helped each other.
my 71 Chevelle "MOTHERS WORRY" It was street driven but also ran at the track when hearing the story about the Nova it brought me back to the 70s both cars my Chevelle and the Nova had so much in common a name all cars needed that back them Cragar SS tunnel rams 5:13 gears roll bars both street cars and also spent weekend at the tracks.
What this Nova really did for me is making want to find Mothers Worry again so thats what im going to try to do the last picture is the way the car looked when I sold it. I finally had to take the name off I got tired of being stopped by the cops and hassled. So maybe to a non car guy that picture means nothing but I think any one that had a car and lived that era could appreciate the hillbilly lettered car I sure do.
By the way My Chevelle was a 1971 triple black 9,000 mile original paint car last known place it was was south side around Orland Park anybody recognize it.
As for the Nova I probably will sell my 67 post Chevelle and use this for my race car.

I'm 44 years old, you couldn't sat it any better than that! I was at the tail end 1960 to 1985 era of the"lets go modify our cars and go racing" there was no "is that a original starter on the car?" We pulled original parts off a car and didn't care. Now everyone has "Original cars, there a dime a dozen" I'm my opinion and you readers can see from the mini poll everyone who's a car guy (with some history to him) would prefer a nostalgic race car to a stock factory issued car. It brings back a lot of memories from my youth, and boy oh boy time is flying and it would be great to taste a little youth as we're all getting old. We want to do original cars because of the big investments in these cars, but I think we would all love to drive a cool Hot Rod anyday of the week.

John bought the Nova for the drive train and was going to sell the body with paper work for the car, but the car was to good the way it is, plus it has a little nostalgia racing behind it. So the Nova is best kept with the 427 & Dana 60 5.13 gear drive train.

I think the confusion some of us that have been following this thread are having is that brgrman indicated early and often that the Nova had a supplanted real L-88 engine. I personally found this to be one of the most interesting aspects of this story.
This L-88 motor has been referred to in any number of posts in the last few days; this claim has never been disputed by either party in this transaction.
However, Stefano recently told us he was told the engine in the car is actually a ’68 L71???
Both buyer and seller have since made posts since Stefano’s revelation, with neither gentleman offering any clarification.
Might we therefore assume that this is once again a case of, “it’s an L-88…. yeah, that’s the ticket….”
Don’t leave us hanging guys; just the facts, please.

Correct; brgrman claimed on the Corvette Forum that this L-88 was missing it’s aluminum heads. Just seems to me that when questions of an individual’s forthrightness are made (i.e. the initial representation of this car when still for sale), an effort would be made to steer clear of murky waters, so to speak.
Again (and I realize that these individuals are surely retired for the night) there has already been a significant time frame for a response to the issue of the Nova’s engine.
Not my intention to berate anyone, in fact both guys seem very serious and enthusiastic about the hobby. That’s why I’m hoping the light of a new day will allow for the fog to clear on the facts here.

The motor transplant from the Corvette was the short block only, no intake or alum heads or carb, just the bottom end. Owner #2 said it's a 427 12.5 compression L-88 Corvette motor. He even gave us the 5 gallon gas can with Sunoco blue 110 race gas for the car, so I know it has the compression and sound like it to. As for your generalization about me 'not being a car guy', you are flat wrong http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif See, I remember doing all that silly 'race-car' stuff to my old Nova - and I don't get goosebumps, I totally cringe! I recall the monster tire street scene, it was no big deal to me - I'd rather see 'em all stock, whitewalls and all.
Yuck!

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif Now that's really funny. You say you don't like it now but you were obviously into back then otherwise why not just stock? I think the only answer for that is that your just twisted. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Honestly, I was born in 68. But when I was a kid I remember the musclecars that were in my driveway. None of them were stock and being around those cars is the reason I am into the hobby today. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

What I was referring to was that Brgrman stated the car was sold Thursday 2/28/08 and to be picked up Sat 3/1/08 then on another forum states on 3/2/08 the engine doesn't go with car. I thought John bought the whole package and I guess he did, I was wondering why after the car was sold and gone the former owner was still mentioning the car as if it were still his. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Let me explain, in the Nova deal there is a never fired LS-7 GM crate motor from 1974. John first wanted the 427 from the Nova and the LS-7 and not the car , so John bought the Nova complete and in tact. John was going to separate the 427 motor from the car, but John changed his mind and decided to keep the Nova as his nostalgic drag car and sell his drag Chevelle car instead. That 's how it stands as of today, but who knows. John also doesn't post much and asked me to respond to the thread. No the car is not mine right now, it's Johns.

I don't think I have it too hillbillied up http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hmmm.gif It used to be a bit more overstated than it is now with balljoint extensions and diamond tuck and all that sort of thing... Doesn't matter, seems like it will be forever emtombed in that garage.... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

I like 'em both ways...and Marty Stuart's Hillbilly Rock tune too!.
Give Marlin a few more years and maybe he'll be paying big for all those hillbilly parts he so hastily tossed and made fun of?.

I realize John may not post much and thats fine, I have been here since 01 and have less than 500 posts myself. I do feel that once a vehichle sells it should be the new owners that post any information unless they cannot post and ask someone to post more for them. I think it a courtesy that the former should bow out from posting more about it to cut down on confusion. I never felt good about posting anything about a car I sold because it wasn't mine anymore. I do have pictures of them in the garage though http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Try to get some Motion Valve covers, that we threw off the car because they were not original factory.

Darren is correct, I was a little 'twisted' at 17 years of age - now I'm recovered, and like my stuff stock. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Those pic's just show that I'm not a newbie, I partook in the craziness known as 'day 2'.
I stand by my initial statement; unless it's a storied race car, take it back to stock http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif
