I am so sick of being bumped, delayed and canceled. A couple of weeks ago my son sat in the plane on the runway for over six hours!!

Why that's just the free market at work! The airlines used to be heavily regulated until 1978 but that was bad, bad, bad. Since deregulation the bad airlines were either gobbled up or put out of business (Darwinsim is okay if we're talking about business) and now we have a good, good, good system of money-making airlines! Oh, and you used to have to wear a coat and tie (men) and dresses and hats (women) but you don't have to do that anymore! Now you can hop on in your flip-flops, sweats, and tank-top and you don't even have to shower or shave (men: face; women: legs and pits) first! You can then demand First Class service in your lowest-bid Internet fare coach seat! Isn't it much better now? Now if we could get all that overpaid airline labor to work for free the U.S. airline system would be perfect! Enjoy your flight!

Don't get me started on the recent awarding to Airbus of the USAF tanker deal! Please pass the "Freedom Fries!"

wild Bill.. question,I thought 60# was the bag weight limit and was informed its 50# per bag 2 per customer on the last trip we just did.

I was told "insert name" airline is going to start saying you get "one" bag at 50# per customer, and heavy fee's if you show up with more...have you heard anything like this?? .. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

Bud, I recently booked my regular New York to Myrtle Beach and a few days later the airline emailed me and said it would be $10.00 per checked bag if I pay online a month in advance or $25.00 per checked bag at the gate. peanuts and carry-on bags still free. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

extra weight = extra fuel = extra charge http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/flag.gif

Bud, the airline complaint line is 1-800-EAT-SH*T. Expect to be put on hold for hours if not days. Your call may be routed through a call center in India but they have been trained to talk with a South Carolina accent so you won't be reminded of outsourcing.

Seriously, I have no idea what the carry-on rules are, I just fly the thing. I am certain that you will be fee'd to death one way or another.

A good airline can make a penny into 50 feet of copper wire.

ok, I called the hot line, your right there trying hard to hide the accent, but I heard him pedalling his bike to stay connected, it just kinda blew me away when the baggage lady mentioned it when I was asking about weights, hell its easy to come up with a couple bags even going sparse if the climate is not warm where your headed about 40/50lbs, I get the extra weight = fuel and them poeple who show up with 3/4 bags 70# each need to pay up. guess we will see how it goes just kinda hit me wrong and pizzed me off they want to charge for a second bag ontop of all the other bs with flying these days, they know darn well you cant go on vaction and make it on one bag per guy...anyway not venting at you it's just rather rude.

dunno whats going on with the cabin workers but there one of the most grumpy hateing life group I have been around on the last few flights and they pretty much let you know it, ...are they getting jacked by there unions??? where did all the babes go??? nothing but gay guys and 50yr old crabby pot belly grannies around... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Flying any airline today is like riding a Grayhound Bus 40 years ago http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Flying the airlines now totally SUX http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bs.gif
And that's not how I really feel.

Try this to avoid checked baggage charges, take your bags with you to the gate, like it's going with you as carry-on luggage. When they tell you that you have too many bags to carry on, ask for then to "gate check" them. They don't have the ability to charge fees at the gate. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

But they do when you go to claim,as I had to do this at Phoenix Sky Harbour,Southwest Florida International,O'Hare & Midway airports recently due to my misjudgement.
Each time my extra bags were held back from the others after landing and I was approached by an attendant asking me to follow them to a customer checkout counter.
I had to pay them then & there or no bags for me.
They are a savy bunch. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Business 101: We reserve the right to cheat the customer but the customer must not be allowed to cheat us.

Think getting on a plane sucks now? Foreign ownership is steamrolling its way through Congress and will become reality once the proper wheels are sufficiently greased. You think American CEOs are penny-squeezers? Wait 'til the Chinese take over a few airlines. I'll put my cars up for sale here first.

Save Today, Fly Tomorrow
Pre-Purchase Your Checked Bags Today & Save
Dear CHRISTOPHER,

You still have time to save 50%! It's not too late to pre-purchase your checked bags for your upcoming Spirit Airlines flight. Beat the rush and save time and money in the process. If you purchase your checked bags now, you can still do so for $5 each way. But hurry, effective February 20, 2008, the new checked bag rates will be $10 when purchased online and $20 when purchased at the airport.

woops, looks like I screwed up again

I absolutely HATE flying and have an extreme fear of it.. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif I think it is a control issue.. I would much rather drive somewhere even though it is usually safer flying, so they say..

I'll do it if I have to, but won't like it..... http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif

My previous job when I was in college was performing line service on corporate jets and believe it or not I would go for "ride along" flights and was not fearful because I knew all of the pilots well and felt comfortable around the jets due to working on them. I also worked with the mechanics and knew how well maintained the planes were..

However, other than Continental and Southwest I am really leary of flying.. I have 2 friends that fly for those airlines so I know those planes/pilots are good to go http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

They're a bold bunch all right. My family tagged along with me last year as I traveled to attend a professional conference. My wife and children had accumulated enough frequent flyer miles on the unnamed airline to fly free. After we returned from the trip I checked the mileage balance in my 10-year-old son's frequent flyer account as, by my calculations, he should be left with only a few thousand miles in his account. I was correct. . .to a point. After the trip he had about 6,000 miles in his account. Unfortunately, shortly after that a deduction transaction labeled "adjustment" for 50,000 miles was made to his account by the unnamed airline giving him a balance of NEGATIVE 44,000 MILES IN HIS FREQUENT FLYER ACCOUNT. I called the airline and explained the situation, and was transferred at least five times to other departments (some twice) and explained the situation each time. After about two hours on the phone, I finally got to the end of the line to a supervisor of some type who explained to me that it is possible to have such a large negative mileage balance. She claimed the 50,000 mile deduction was legitimate but had now way of validating or explaining it and, quite frankly, had no intention of investigating it. It sounded like an inside job to me. I then informed her that I attended graduate business school with the current CEO of the airline she worked for and that I intended to contact him personally first thing in the morning using her name(the truth is, the airline CEO and I did go through the same MBA program, but he was a few years behind me and I don't know him, but she didn't know that. I did however, intend to contact him). Amazingly, her response to me was "Go ahead!" http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif. Maybe she thought I was bluffing but it was a hell of a gamble on her part! Prior to picking up the phone to call the CEO the next morning (I suspect he would have responded to my attempt to contact him as our alumni tend to accommodate one another), I checked my son's mileage balance and the "adjustment" was reversed and his mileage was indeed correct so I let it slide. If this is how they treat the best and most loyal customer base, I can't imagine how they treat the rest. I don't think I have set foot on one of their planes since and I fly more than most Americans.
When we handed huge checks to the airlines after 9/11, we should have put a message on the back of the check stating that by endorsing the check the payee agrees to fly on schedule, be respectful to their passengers (who are their customers), maintain their equipment and deliver quality service. I don't think that's an unreasonable request. I wonder how many of them would have cashed the check?

From management's point of view it is too an unresonable request. It costs money to do all that and the CEO, top managers, Wall Street banks, board of directors and major shareholders all DEMAND a return on investment. If management spends money on all that stuff then there's less money, maybe no money for executive bonuses and paybacks to those powerful interests that are invested in the company. There is INTENSE and RELENTLESS pressure on managment to keep costs as low as possible and that pressure is passed on to the traveling public through BS of the kind you experienced with your frequent flyer miles. If you want a cheap seat then you have to forego everything you mentioned. Oh, and don't expect airline employees to be all smiles after their several pay cuts and all the BS that is pushed down on them from management. (Sh!t flows downhill.) Imagine yourself being hammered RELENTLESSLY by your boss or management to work harder and harder and longer and longer for less and less money.

Senator McCain will win in November and he is a strong proponent of foreign ownership of U.S. airlines and he does not like airline pilots. Once a Chinese (or other nationality) investment group buys a major U.S. airline then the dismantling of the airline's labor unions will begin through forced strikes or just unilateral pay and benefit cuts. There are plenty of hungry workers, foreign AND domestic, ready to walk right in and take over. I was just in Oakland yesterday where the Kaiser Permanente nurses are on strike. The hotel is full of scab nurses flown in from all over the good old USA and they are going through training in the hotel conference center as we speak. (Hmm, security guards everywhere too.) I saw that as an example of what could easily happen to me, a unionized airline pilot. Foreign ownership is inevitable and someday you'll board your flight and there will be two nice foreign pilots who speak ragged English and foreign cabin crews who also struggle to communicate with you. Hey, it's the cost-effective way. The Holy Grail of airline managers is this equation: Cost = 0. In other words, 100% profit is the dream of every business owner, especially airlines with tight profit margins in good times and razor-thin proft margins, if any, these days. If they could just get employees to work for free then managers could go to sleep at night with big smiles on their faces. As labor falls out of favor with the American people we get closer and closer to Cost = 0.

Having said all that, skyrocketing fuel prices might kill off affordable flying before foreign owners can replace the unionized workers so my point could be moot.

For the record, my employer refused the post 9/11 government bail-out money.
