View Full Version : sc69sam's 1969 SS Nova!

Back in the summer I was thinking on getting another car. I always wanted to get another 69 nova again and was looking to find a somewhat decent one or maybe even a 66-67 small block, 4 speed chevelle. Could not find any novas but found a pretty nice chevelle at Coffees Corvettes in Scranton, Pa. After not being able to strike a deal on the chevelle I was looking once again.

Entering the scene was good ole Marlin Spotts our resident nova guru! He gave me a phone number of a guy in North Carolina with a 69 SS survivor nova 4 speed. Well that made my day. I contacted the guy so we went back and forth for over a month trying to cut a deal. Neither of us would budge! Again contacting Marlin about the car and having Don White (GTO DON) tell me I BETTER buy it just gave me the little umph I needed for the decision. I knew Marlin and Tommy K. saw the car and Don and I saw some nice pictures of the nova I felt I was ok.

Car was picked up (on all arrangements made by the seller) and delivered the same day, a rainy Friday in October. Pouring rain but it got here. My first survivor car. Old blue lived in California all its life till coming to North Carolina for a brief stay over. I loved the car at first site and knew I was the type of person who could own a survivor. 39,000 original miles with original paint, drive train, interior, exhaust, battery cables, spare tire and clutch. Never been blown in with any paint or any chrome replaced. Even my wife said I did good! And yes Benny it does have some docs!!

In the past few weeks I was able to contact the original owner and have conversations with him about his old car. He was forced to sell in 2004 to a corvette friend of his because he lost his job to NAFTA. He was a strawberry farmer/picker for 40 years. He told me about when he ordered the car from Home Motors in Santa Maria (dealership is still there) in October of 1968 and when he picked it up in late December of 68. I was impressed with his memory.

The car still retains the original black plates with the California dirt clinging to the back. Doing a little maintenance and taking my time and doing some real elbow grease type of cleaning the little nova is looking great! It gets driven every week and will see a couple local car shows in the summer.

Again I would like to thank Marlin for dialing me in on the car, Donny for convincing me it was a good deal, and Jeff Grote (the owner) in North Carolina for being patient and having great communication skills. And thanks for this site and the guys that make it up.

Sam

[/ QUOTE ] You know me Benny! Gets driven couple times a week. Then I can spend time cleanin it! Donnie, I put the original California plate on the front with the stickers for 1969 looks good. Since the pictures, I located the original shifter for the car and in the process of having the guy send it to me now. Like pulling teeth but hopefully I will get it shortly. It was placed in the Hurst box when the Hurst was inatalled some time in January of 1969. Don White got me into these survivor cars and man its like Heaven, well........ almost! I just appreciate this original true survivor stuff more and more. If these cars only could talk.

NO Day-2 for the nova. The Z/28 yes but the nova no. Got to have one Day-2 and one original in my opinion. If I had to restore the nova that may be a different story but a survivor car http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/no.gif I may get tired of the wheels but Donnie already set me up with that.

Any vintage photos?

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't quote me on this, but I'm fairly sure the only 4 bolt main small blocks were the 68 & up 302's, and the LT-1. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Salvatore
03-20-2008, 04:20 PM
Nope, 68's were 2 bolt blocks and in 69 the SS 350's and the Z/28's and the 4 barrell truck blocks were basically all the same. 1969 started the 4 bolt blocks. So when you think you are buying something special when you buy a DZ block you are really ONLY buying the stamped suffix code. Unless of course you have the car to go with the DZ block.

ORIGLS6
03-20-2008, 06:30 PM
Yep, I have 4 0010 blocks. Three are four bolt main and came out of 4WD trucks.

PeteLeathersac
03-20-2008, 07:30 PM
But there's 010 2 bolt blocks too isn't there?.
And what's the other casting used for the 69 DZ's...and only the two used?.
And the truth on the high nickle content thing is...and only the 010's or what?.

Anyone know by chance what casting was used on the blocks shipped to S. Africa for the 100 factory installed Can-Am Firenza cars and spares?. These things are the ultimate http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drool.gif and I've asked a few of owners of these cars for info before but only had confirmation of the DZ suffix, never any replies to the casting #'s or dates?.

And lastly, anyone have production by suffix for DZ's...I think Fran Preve listed these back in SuperChevy once?.

Sorry for the sidetrack-hijack..

~ Pete

Salvatore
03-21-2008, 12:29 AM
Yes GM said that the 010 blocks had some high nickel contents but http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif Blocks used were 386,010,388 and 618 for the Z/28's and the SS cars. In 67 the motors were small journal 2 bolt blocks in 68 they were large journal 2 bolt blocks and 69 is the change, large journal 4 bolt blocks. So when you see someone asking $2,500.00 for a 69 DZ block tell them they are nuts except if it is the original block from your Z/28. Sand the DZ code off and it becomes the same block that was put in that little 1 ton dump truck. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Something else people never mention is the distributor tower in the block. At some point in either late 69 or early 70 they started machining the tower to be level with the lifter valley. Sam before we get too far off subject, that is a spectacular car you have. Most cars even from California are never this nice. Your car is truly exceptional. If you go back to the Muncie mystery shifter do you want to sell the Hurst shifter?

"If you go back to the Muncie mystery shifter do you want to sell the Hurst shifter?"

What is the deal with the mystery shifter?

WILMASBOYL78
03-21-2008, 01:05 AM
They call them that, because it's a "mystery" as to which gear you're in http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif The factory Muncie shifters in the Novas and probably the other cars, were notorious for jamming and for being sloppy...the shifter partially mounts to the crossmember, so there is a natural tug of war with the tranny when the engine torques http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif these shifters were the first thing that went back in the day....we use Hurst bodies with Muncie handles on some our cars....best of both worlds. There are some guys who rebuild the Muncie units and can make them work reasonably well...still can't match the Hurst for reliability http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/burnout.gif

Mark The "Mystery Shifter" is going to stay on the shelf. The Hurst is going to stay in the car. I have to give drivers ed to my wife and a couple of my kids so they can learn to drive the car to and from some local shows. An original Muncie shifter will just make driving all more a "mystery" for them to learn how to drive the nova. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif

Beings this is the year of the nova with Sully's, Benny's, Kwizz's, mine etc. I think Mark and Tommy should send their pictures and write up in too. Joe De's 1969 blue survivor L78 nova was one of my favorite cars at Vettefest in November. I bet everybody would like to see a MR on that bad boy too. Has a lot of racing history. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif Sam

Plus a 69 Z/28 which there are millions of and a pretty nice SS nova "small block" are not going to knock anybodys socks off. Those 2 cars are nice but not Supercar's like a COPO, Yenko, Ram Air 4 car, Hemi, etc! I don't think I could own a car I would not, could not, should not drive.
