It is not mine but thought maybe someone might know where the car is. Vin is 19N641573

That doesn't make any sense to me. Yeah I think anyone who has one of these cars would love to have the original engine however, sometimes the guy who has the engine wants to hold you ransom as with my car.

Yes, but let's put this in perspective. I am just throwing numbers out there for simplicity. If a COPO car is worth...$100,000 restored without the original motor. And it is worth $150,000 with the original motor, what do you think that motor is worth to the seller? We know what it is worth to the buyer.

I had 4 original MN motors...One sold and is in a ls6 70 chevelle, one went to a guy whos making a 68 clone 427 car, one is still for sale, and the last one im going to put in a 68 small block camaro. Yes you could be right. I think that it is smart to keep track of where it is. But I just thought it was funny when I read it the first time. I also think that if someone owns a COPO car they could afford the motor. But I have been wrong before. Could be a timing thing where the funds are just not there at the present time. Although now is the time to buy since the market has seemed to slow down.

If the guy who still has my engine was asking 12k I would of bought it up in a heartbeat, but 28000 was alittle overboard. Funny thing, next swapmeet I saw him selling at with my engine in his spot, a ce engine showed up 2 spots from him for 800.00 with the same casting dates. Guess what's in my car.

Why call these guys cheap? Perhaps they have have other things that they need to spend their hard earned cash on, like paying a mortgage, heating the house, taking care of a patent, or maybe even feeding the kids. Not everyone can spend boat loads of cash on over priced car parts being sold these days. Some guys want to be in this hobby for the pleasure of owning one of these special cars, and may not be able to spend $20,000 for an engine block. Obviously it depends on how much money you already have invested in your COPO car if it's worth paying $x amount for the original motor, but it's also a factor if you just don't have the financial resources to purchase it. I don't think $28K is crazy for the original VIN 427 for a COPO car, but I can tell you I don't have $28K sitting around or even the resources of getting that money without selling something.

That's *assuming* the car will be sold...if the owner never plans to sell, then the original engine is only *icing* on their COPO cake.

This is also *assuming* the owner bought the car in todays market, and has a tidy sum of expendible cash...what about the guy that was lucky enough to buy a COPO car years and years ago when all folks cared about was that it was a Camaro and no one knew any better? He may just have a few thousand dollars in the car over the years, and now someone is doing him a favor and offering the original engine at tens of thousands of dollars?

Sorry to use the term "cheap" for lack of a better term... what should I have called it? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif I wasn't referring to this particular situation because I know nothing about it.... I too would balk at $28k for the original motor - especially if there's a premium (possibly a ransom) being asked by the seller. There's a point (a price) when that's not realistic, even if you're Donald Trump.

I aplaud anyone for hanging onto a good car if they can, but a good car also deserves a certain level of respect (like being reunited with its original components when the opportunity presents itself). We all cringe when a guy tries to restore a good rare car with poor quality parts and poor workmanship and actually does more bad than good. It's not for any of us to to say whether he's right or wrong to do what he does with his car...

That block was cast 1 week before mine, assembled 1 1/2 month before mine and my partial VIN is 19N661xxx.
I guess they were just not machined, nor assembled, in the same order as they were cast.

2 of the May 69 pad stamped motors i had were cast Dec 68 and Jan 69..A third May stamp was cast April 22 69. A Jan stamped pad[TO128MN] had a dec 68 casting.
