Today there was an Open House at Jack Douglass. Well, what used to be Jack's place but is now Ferrari Dealer Continental Motors. Thought I would post some of the pictures..

Imagine what this shop looked like 39 years ago?

Some pretty pricy toolboxes I imagine.. And a 512 Berlinetta Boxer in for some fine tuning..

39 years ago this would be a 427 on the stand.

Some of the classics. Not being up to speed on Ferraris I don't really know what these are but they were very nice cars.

But I think I know a little bit about them. And from what I could tell (and a little peek underneath) I am pretty sure this was a late 80's GTO. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worship.gif

Imagine the intoxicating smell of the fine leather in this thing. I could have sat with my nose in there all day. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Darren,

Great stuff...but am I mistaken. Isn`t that entire rear of the building all new with a complete addition only about 3-4 years ago? Nevertheless a great looking, clean and organized shop.

Thanks for sharing.

Dan.

-----Wow Darren,,,These pics really bring back memories. I probably spent thousands of hours in that building. The Coke machine had no Coke, only beer. The rear area was always full of Vettes in all levels of finish, and we used to have all kinds of other high-perf stuff hanging around. Multiple Cobras, one GT40, a few bathtub Porsches, 442s, GTOs, Camaros, Chevelles, AMG Mercedes, and even some hot rods. Those definetly were the days. Summer meant street races up and over 294, sometimes on a nightly basis. And since I only lived about three blocks away, many parties in my garage. If any of you have ever seen an "Outlaw Racer" T-shirt or jacket around Chicago, that club started at Classic Motors (the old Jack Douglass Chevrolet) and my garage.
-----I have to say that the tool boxes were no where near as nice as what I see here. Thanks for the pics, Darren!!!.......Bill S

-----Dan,,,While a whole lot nicer than when I was working there the back bays look almost exactly the same. At least, I dont see any major expansion....

I was under the impression that the garage area was original. The front got the remodel and they attached another building next to the garage. I looked around at all the fixturing and electric in the garage and it appeared to be vintage. But I can certainly be wrong. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Darren, if you have to ask for the price on a Ferrari, you can't afford one. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

I remember Jack Douglas being over on Ogden and Route 83. Did they move from this location to there? And when?

-----James,,,The dealership you are thinking of was Jacks downfall. The dealership you see here was the original "Jack Douglass Chevrolet" and was very successfully run by him for many years. It was on Ogden at 294 on the Hinsdale side. When I worked there it was "Classic Motors" and Jack was a partner.........Bill S

I used to date a girl who worked at John & Pat Hartneys old place,The Cypress Restaurant, just a few doors east of you Bill.
I would pick her up & drop her off constantly in my 72 Chevelle back then...We used to like to park in the lot of the Ole Graue Mill alot too. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif...That is up until the car Bomb went off in that Mercedes 380SL off the Ogden/294 ramp..

I still have quite a few "Classic Motors" descriptive used car ads saved from my old Hemmings Motor News issues.
You sure did by alot of ad space back then. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

------John and Pat were friends of Jacks and at one point gave us both of their Mercedes to sell. They both had huge engines and some sort of air-ride that was broken. I raced a Mustang with one of them after we got the suspension pumped up one day and absolutely smoked him.
------I was at lunch with my lawyer the day that bomb went off. When I tried to go back to work the area was all cordoned off. I lived nearby as I said and went home instead and then walked up to the scene from the back side. I have never and hope to never see anything like that again. The engine was over 50 feet from the explosion........Bill S
