Can anyone tell me where i can find nfo for decoding metal 4 speed tags for muncie m20 21 and 22. I have 40 or 50 of those metal tags from mostly 69 and 1970 and would like to decipher some of them.

3950356 is for RPO M20 with L48, L34, L35, LM1
3946797 is for RPO M20 with Z28 & L78
3946798 is for RPO M21 with Z28 and L78
3950318 is for RPO m22 with Z28 and L78

I believe this info is according to the AIM for 1969 models.

In the past 6 months or so I've had several 1969 Chevelle people asking me for tag #3946767 for an L-78 application... I don't have this tag and have never seen one... If you go to Camaro assembly manual the tag for L-78 is 3946797... My question is does anyone have a 3946767 tag, or have they seen one??? Or my thought is that it's a typo and the 9 got flipped in the printing process to become a 6... These tags are usually in familyies of tag numbers...
3946797
3946798
3946799
I have never seen any tag number either side of 3946767...
I'm open to any and all input... Crash

Hate to say, but Chuck's list has several errors in it. Also, note that Chevelle and Camaro shared some applications, but some were unique.

Crash,
The 767 # is one of the errors.

I agree with the 6767 issue, all Chevrolet materials I've seen report it should be a 9.
I have two actual 9 tags here as well.
I can not confirm if this typo was made by the author of the list or the source he got it from, but it does look like an error.

Take this with a grain of salt as my records are not as complete as others.
I'm finding the Muncie M-20 #3870372 was installed behind the 1966-67 396cid & 427cid vehicles only.
It also shows when the 1966 Passenger series got a 327cid,it got Muncie M-20 #3884603 (Not used behind L-79).
A friend of mine who owns a 1967 327cid Passenger series has an M-20 w/#3916108 tag on it.
I'm sure crash could help narrow this down some more.

That's a Muncie 4spd. 2:52:1 ratio used originally in:
1968 Passenger series w/396cid & 427cid.
1968 Camaro,Chevy II w/327cid & 350cic & 396cid.

And recommended replacement in:
1967 Camaro 350cid & 396cid.
1966-68 Chevelle,Camaro 327cid.
1965-67 Passenger series.
1966 Chevy II.

Mr70

That's a Muncie 4spd. wide ratio 2:52:1 as well.
Used originally in:
*1968 Passenger series w/8.15 X 15 tires w/3:55 axle AND when 396cid or 427cid. equipped.
*1968 Corvette w/o Posi or 3:55 axle.

And Recommended replacement in:
*1965-67 Passenger & Corvettes when NOT close ratio equipped.
*1965 Corvette w/o Spcl. Hi-Perf or Fi.

It was soon superceded in 1970 by Muncie #3964507 for same applications.

Lynn

From the assy manual for 1969 Camaro (don't know about Chevelle or 67-68 Camaro)

3950356 is for RPO M20 with L48, L34, L35, LM1
3946797 is for RPO M20 with Z28 & L78
3950316 is for RPO M21 with L34
3946798 is for RPO M21 with Z28 and L78
3950318 is for RPO M22 with Z28 and L78

Evidently, from this and from the RPO spreadsheet file in pdf available at camros.org, you could not order a close ratio (M21 or M22) unless you had L34 (M21 only) or Z/28 or L78.

Now, for another question: Why is there a different tag number for the M20 behind a Z/28 or L78 as opposed to the one behind an L48 engine? They would be identical outside dimensions. The Z and the L48 would have identical shifters and brackets. Was there anything internally different between a Z/28 M20 and the regular small block SS M20? There had to be something different about these transmissions to warrant different tags. Maybe the standard rear gear ratio?

So after reading this topic of discussion, I decide to go out in the garage and check out the tag for my 69 Z/28 and see if it has that 3946797 tag that is being discussed...

Mind you, this Muncie is the matching number gearbox for my car but has been sitting under a workbench for 15 + years (my buddy who used to own the car broke one of the mounting ears). I've never bothered to look at it other than to make sure the VIN was correct....

Low and behold, here's a pic of what I found....

I have one I have been trying badly to decode: M20 with an assembly code of P2C29A. Has the 26 spline in and 32 out, drain plug, case #3925661, tail #3978764, and side cover #3952648. Everything seems to indicate it came in an 1972 BB Chevelle. The metal tag on the side cover is: 6271516WD. I am confident that it is correct for the trans. I have had it since 1980 and I know it has not been touched and the metal tag has stayed intact. Would love to know how to decode this metal tag. Any help would be appreciated!
PS. tried to upload a pic of it but do not know how. Clicked on "enter an image" but it's asking for a ULR. Does that mean I have to put the pic on a page to add? -Technology passes us all by sooner or later...

All the four speeds in 69 got the hurst shifter.

I believe the answer to the question was submitted by crash: "Different speedo gears on the main shaft..." Crash

The Z and L78 would likely have the lower rear axle dictating different speedo gears to at least get close on the speedo.

Mike

mockingbird812
08-21-2013, 05:26 PM
Mikey, I agree. I don't understand why there would be a different tag (and for that matter the trans construction) for a L34 vs L78 engine in front of an M21. Referenced car is original engine, tranny, and rear with owner history and multiple dealer and factory docs. What could matter (as far as differentiating M21 variants on the assembly line) is the speedo gear wrt the rear axle ratio.

68z28kk
08-21-2013, 06:36 PM
There are 3 different speedometer drive gears used on the tail shaft in the muncies. The rear axle ratio will determine which one is used. That is probably why the numbers differ. If a speedo reducer adapter was used that may also reduce the number of different tags that were needed. Here is where I found the information, http://home.comcast.net/~chevelleengineer/speedo.htm it could come in handy. Clint

Furback, 3968012 WM Transmission tag was used on 70 Camaro and Corvette M22 applications. It was a 10 spline input with a 27 spline mainshaft.
70 Chevelle with a 454 engine used a 3978766 WO coded Trans which is the 26 spline input with a 32 spline mainshaft for the M22 that they used. This was for both ls6 and ls5.

Anyone have a 'WM' tag to sell like Rick posted at the top of page 6 for a 1970 M22? Or where to get a good reproduction tag?

Does anyone know what application for Muncie assembly 3880853 would fit? My tranny has this tag number.

Thanks, Paul

I would have cut you a sweet deal had it been out of your car.

I know this is an older thread, but my new ‘67 Chevelle SS L78 came with an M20....I didn’t realize the M21 was even available, and I was too naive honestly to know the difference! But, it’s now obvious to me that without spec’ing the M21 on the order the factory put the M20 into the build as the standard 4 speed. Car was an absolute rocket regardless and I never had any issues with the M20. I’d probably opt for the M21 given the chance to go back in time! Still miss the car to this day! Hardly ever see a Deepwater Blue Metallic ‘67 Chevelle these days! Been looking for it for many years!

With Dale's permission, I am posting a link to his older site with a multitude of information on Transmissions and tags. Most tag information at the bottom of the page. Hope this helps:
