View Full Version : COPO 427 engine value??

Hey guys, a buddy of mine scored at an estate sale with an original 1968(?) COPO 427. We checked the numbers and everything is right. Block, heads, intake manifold and exhaust manifolds. Apparently it had been rebuilt or freshened up fairly recently and fired right up, runs and sounds great. Any ideas on value? There not selling it but we're wondering just for kicks. They want to run headers and a tunnel ram which I think is a bad move for the engine from a historical point of view, but it's theres... Any thoughts?

Casting numbers and dates as well as the numbers on the front pad are needed to determine the valve.
James
Dean...If you want to spend a few mins, look through the parts for sale section on the site. There have been a few listed here and you can get a pretty good idea of what they are worth.

Hopefully you mean a 69 dated COPO 427 motor. What are the casting #'s, dates and engine code on the pad? That information will help determine what it is for sure. Also, look for a partial VIN in the rough cast vertical area by the oil filter.

I dont have the full numbers off hand but I know it was the COPO "MN" code on the front pad. They checked out the other numbers as well and they spec'd out I guess...

Was 'MN' used in '68 as an RPO?
PeteLeathersac
05-06-2008, 06:09 PM
The '68 part is probably from casting dates?.
Is it a 512 block...and is there a distrib there too, & the #'s?.
Can you lay all the stamped info on us?.
The closest BB suffix to be confused could be the MH which was an L36 Vette motor...I believe all other MN's were SB?.
As far as the $ value question goes, ChucKing probably has a better idea than anyone on what these actually will reach?.
Important is retrieving and providing the Vin as mentioned above as this could prove interesting also have an impact on the value?.

Wouldn't a 68 big block COPO motor be one-of-one?
Jeff H
05-07-2008, 05:16 AM
MN would be a 69 motor. Was the casting date late 68 or is possible you're looking at a "9" in the casting and seeing it as an "8"? We definitely need more information to help out. That being said, an MN coded motor in CT would make me think Scuncio. Did you check for the partial VIN down along the flange by the oil filter?

What estate auction was it and where? Was it in a Car or engine by itself?
I tell you folks the truth and get hammered on ,someone else comes on here to jerk your chain and you all bite,I think it was at elvis presleys estate auction and they bought it for a $1 everyone else wanted the record junk.Oh and the new owner is going to bore it to a 454 just for kicks he is also going to weld up the outside main cap holes to save on bolts and just use 2 instead of 4, as for the value its worth $10 per 100 lbs in scrap.Yall have a great day and quit being suckers http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif

I don't find this guy's story to be unbelievable - he's asking a very simple question. It's not like he pulled it out of the river bottom or something!
BTW, if it's in CT, I wouldn't jump towards Scuncio as there were several Yenko dealers in CT as well - think OG '69 Yenko Camaro. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/naughty.gif

Yep, that's one of them!
Wow the pms and emails and responce on this post, Looks like I called this one right. No it just happened to be in a estate sale no one knew about and there gona trash the originality and he says all the numbers were correct but cant tell you what they were now ,I guess its short term memory loss. Ok for all the emails hes going to dremmel tool the block for the 454 crank may even use a hammer and chissel since he dosen't have to bore it.

not a true statement, I heard about it just been busy trying to track down just when and where it was to happen. I had a few places that I was told sometime back that they were to auction off a 68 427 car and they told me they dont auction cars when in fact I know they did. Now if it was one of them and I have emails and phone messages from them telling me its not them and it happens to be them what recorse would I have since they lied and i was not allowed to bid

Hey joey, how about I send you a pic of me giving you a thumbs up standing over the engine? The motor does exist, purchased at an estate sale and it runs great. Was in a car, but not the original or even correct model. I'm going over to my buddie's house tomorrow and will get the details.

[/ QUOTE ] You have no recorse because the auction company works for the seller not the buyer. However if this happened Im sure the seller would be interested and would have recorse,But no auction company is going to turn away a serious bidder because thats were there income comes from.
