View Full Version : Anybody missing an LS6 Engine??? TO316CRV

Over the weekend I stopped at a local body shop that I knew had some old car parts. I went in there and I talked to the owner and he showed me some of the parts he had, and an engine. He claimed that he picked it up in 1971 from Ed Fanning Chevrolet on Route 31 in Aurora. This was the original motor pulled out because it had a wrist pin noise. He then replaced the pistons and rods and ran it in his 69 Camaro at Oswego drag way till 73. Then he pulled the motor out and it has been sitting in his shop since then. Would like to find the car that it belongs to. He thought it was a convertible, which is what the parts manager Phil? told him in 1971. The VIN number on the block is 10R2202XX. I left the last two digits off; if someone has the car they may not even know it’s an LS6.

Hoo boy http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I know there was a guy from the Aurora area who was either a user on this site or the Chevelle site, who owns a 70 LS6 (not a convertible) that his father bought at Ed Fanning Chevy in the very early 70's. I know I traded either emails or PM's with him a year or two ago....of course I don't have any of the messages any more, and I can't remember either his name or his user name http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif Although I wouldn't swear to it, I seem to recall that it had a replacement engine from Fanning's service dept. A real long shot here, but perhaps someone else has better recollection than I do (probaly anyone else has better recollection than I do http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif )

I also know Phil who worked in the Parts Dept. back then (although he wasn't the Parts Manager) but I seriously doubt that he would be able to shed much light on the matter http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

BOY THIS WOULD BE REAL COOL TO PUT THE ORGINAL ENGINE WITHT HE ORGINAL CAR. AND A REAL SWEET DEAL IF IT TRUNED OUT TO BE A LS 6 CONVT. I WILL BE WATCHING TO SEE WHAT COMES ABOUT

Well, I discovered that the contact I had with the LS6 owner was not on this site, it was on Team Chevelle. I did manage to find an old PM I had from him on that site, but it was from a year and a half ago. I replied to it, so will see what happens http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif He had an email address listed in his profile there, but it's apparently inactive, since an email message I sent came back as undeliverable. And there's no one by his name listed on anywho.com either http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Bill, the car is still registered in Illinois in Aurora, he has moved and I was able to get his name and the new address; from the internet. My friend went there last night and talked to the guy. The car is absolutely mint. The owner of the car is coming over this weekend to look at the motor. He has owned the car since 92, he got the car off his father(who got it off the original owner Al Lence) and his father passed away 4 days latter. The guy lived in Aurora where it is still registered; and now he moved to Sugar Grove. I guess I can't get the car. Pretty cool, how close it is. It would be really cool to unite the original motor with the car

Yes, it is real the guy is going over to the body shop this weekend to see the engine. The deal that I worked out with the shop, if I could have got the car, I would have given him a completely rebuilt 512 block dated 69 427 with a 163 intake and 4346 carb. That he could put in his 1969 Camaro. You can see in one of the pictures of the motor his 69 Camaro he is restoring. I guess it would be up to the seller of the motor what it would take. He has had it for a real long time the motor and what would it cost him to replace it. The real value I guess is for the guy who owns the car if he wants the correct motor??? or if he is happy with his CE replacement. If he never sells the car who cares what he has in it. For me it would be having the correct motor maybe not in the car but on a stand in the garage...

Hey all, I am the owner of the LS6. I am planning on going to look at the motor today if possible. This is truly amazing that the original block to my car is only about 10 miles from my house!! I don't have any paperwork, which still bothers me, but I have known all along how rare this car is. The original owner is still in the next town over from me, and he put together a letter stating that he was the original owner, and that the factory engine was replaced at Fanning in Aurora. If I told you what my dad paid for this car, you would all hate me.

I remember riding in the car with my father when I was a kid, and I remeber him telling me time and time again that when I was off on my own, the car would be mine. My dad became ill in 1992, and I was given the title to the car shortly before he passed, thus the reason for the DADSLS6 plates. Here are a few pics, I hope they work!

Marty,

Nice car. I'm curious about a couple things. Do you recall ever seeing black stripes on the car? Did your dad ever say anything about a repaint? I can't tell by the engine compartment shot, is there a drive belt around the A.I.R. pump? It looks like the original diverter with no hoses attached to it. Just curious, really nice ride.

JB

martyb
05-18-2008, 09:54 PM
JB,

The car did not come with stripes. I put headers on the car about 15 years ago, but I thankfully kept the original exhaust manifolds and smog set up. They are tucked away nicely in my basement.

Thank you for the compliments.

I just saw the motor, and I would LOVE to have it, however, I just dumped money into my Viper, and I have 3 kids that will all be off to college in the upcoming years. I hate priorities sometimes!!! Someday I hope to have the original block sitting in the car though.

Maybe he would be interested in a partial trade for the engine that is currently in the car? I imagine it is a CE block. That would be better for his 69 Camaro anyway. He would even be able to drive the car to see how it ran.

Hi Marty,

Glad to see you found this website http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I'm sure you're very fond of your Viper - but this is a one in a million opportunity presenting itself here http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/scholar.gif There are many, many people who would give their left you-know-what to be in the situation you're in right now...unless the engine owner is looking for stupid money, I'd make it happen http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbang.gif Time is NOT your friend right now....these opportunities have a way of disappearing if the right course of action is not pursued in a timely manner.

Well, I tried! We discovered that the heads on the engine are not dated correctly, and the heads on my engine are, meaning I would really just like the short block(or block for that matter). The owner of the engine does not want to seperate the engine, which I can certainly understand. As I mentioned earlier, I will never sell the car, so the CE engine will continue to power the car the 200-300 miles per year that I drive it.

The figure is not out of reason but it is when the person is just trying to capitalize on the fact that he has it and someone else needs it. That is not wrong and is what makes the world go around but I can see Marty's point. He never intends to sell his car so having the numbers matching engine will do nothing for him other than piece of mind knowing it was reunited with the original car. Marty and I have talked in length over dinner the other night regarding the engine and it is nothing more than a (now) built 454 with wrong dated heads, a tunnel ram and two fours which hasn't been run in MANY years. This would be a $4000 engine to anyone else and I think Marty is somewhat being held hostage because it should be with him and his car. I don't think the other person is necessarily wrong for trying to get the most money but Marty is the only one who would give him that kind of money. I think it would be nice if they could meet somewhere in the middle and make it a win/win situation. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

The engine is EASILY worth $10K if Marty intended on selling the car in the near future as he would more the recoup his investment but in his situation, he would be spending a lot of money for something that will not do anything for him. He has three girls to put through college and fortunately, that is where his priorities are.

martyb
05-24-2008, 03:37 AM
Shankin, I am a family first guy, that is really what matters to me. I am also a business man, and that comes in a close second for me. I am more of a car nut than most, but the cars fall 3rd in line for me.

Not being able to get paperwork on my car is what keeps me up at night!! As I mentioned, I know the original owner, and have a notarized letter from him stating the issues with the original engine, but I sure wish he would call me and tell me he found everything from when he purchased the car, that would make my day for sure.

Marty, that's three bills from guys who are interested enough in seeing this blessed reunion to provide contributions without any strings attached whatsoever. If the guy doesn't want to negotiate the block only, then do one of two things, buy the whole works, parts out the extra stuff, or find yourself a run of the mill 454 block and swap everthing over and sell it. Based on experience selling off the extra parts will probably be the way to go though.
