There has been a lot of discussion on some of the boards. What is your input.
It stems from this

I am just saying these are mostly kids discussing this and they think the Z28 should be the top HP car. When in history, it NEVER WAS.
The SS could be had with an L78 396 with 375Hp and the best the Z ever got was the 70 Z with the LT-1 and 360Hp. Of course this is factory ratings.

I would imagine a '69 Z28 would run with a '69 L78 all day long...

Uhhh, no...in similarly equipped cars, the L78 will outpace the Z28 (except maybe in the turns!)...the 302 was a good little engine, but let's be real here.

But the downside to the SS being top dog is that you could get 6 cyl SS cars in the early/mid 60's so it's not a true indicator of performance. The Z28 just about always had the strongest overall combination. Obviously the L78/L89 was stronger but you have to group those SS cars with the SS350 and 6 cyl cars. It kind of a meaningless argument since both had some strong performance years and both had some dog years.

You cannot lump in a Camaro SS with the 6 cylinder argument. No such cars were made in F-body's...BKH http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beers.gif

I always thought of a Z28 as a road racing/handling package more than a 1/4 mile screamer... Not that its any "lesser" of a package than an SS, just developed for a different purpose.

I entirely agree with this position. The SS Camaro in the
big block varient was the top dog.

In a street race (where 99% of these cars built thier rep, and what sold the cars) what would you rather have: a small block 302 that had 0 low rpm torque or a 396 that was all in with 400lbs + torque @ 5k.? Remember the Z28 was built to go Trans Am racing, wasn't necessarily built to be the number one selling Camaro. Although they did sell a ton of them. My .02
The ss was king absolutely . As the cowboy said when a man with a 6 gun meets a man with a rifle the man with the 6 gun dies. However the small block needs some respect with the right driver and the right gear combination(488 and a carb change would propelled the little rocket down the quarter at a consistent 12:60 with slicks.
I know I was there.

This is right on the money as the Z28 was so much more than a hot motor and really a whole package designed to compete in the SCCA Trans-Am series...it's success on the street & strip a bonus!.

It's too bad the SS cars had that ugly black grille. Now an RS equipped SS on the other hand...
