Is there any opinion on the effects of non zinc oil on high performance cam wear. I have read that modern motor oils do not offer protection for solid lifter/cam.

Does or has anyone used "Oil Extreme Concentrate" in their motor???? I have read that this product offers the same wear protection as zinc.

My engine builder tells me that I need to run zinc oil like Rotella T in all our engines or I will suffer premature wear.

I use Valvoline VR-1 oil in my 68 solid lifter Z28. It is very high in zinc

Everyone around here uses VR-1 too.It really is the most economical and best solution I think.

What is "Brad Penn" oil??? Have a chance to get a few cases locally. I understand it has a high zinc content, but I have never heard of it.

Thank you in advance.

Brad Penn is Pa. based and comes from the old Bradford, Pa. wells. Same composition as Kendall GT-1 of old. Go to Yahoo search and type in Brad Penn. I use it and also Rotella-T. http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/3gears.gif P.S. I think we discussed this in length not to long ago. In technical and Resto under motor oil.

Not everyone Rick....I use Rotella and I had the foresight to stock up on the old Rotella with the API rating of CI-4. The new Rotella has a new API rating of CJ-4 which I understand has a lower level of zinc but still has more zinc than conventional moror oil. When my supply of Rotella runs dry(which should take several years) I too will probably switch to the Valvoline VR1.

Has anyone here actually worn out or know of anyone who has worn out a cam on an engine by using "regular" oil off the shelf? I'm not talking about a fresh built engine, but rather one that's been going strong for 1000's of miles, for years. I understand the importance of zinc for break in, which is why people have used break-in lube for years...but what about an engine that's already got thousands of miles on it? Do they still "really" need something more than oil off the shelf? The reason i ask is I know many local guys who have been using regular 10w30 oil off the shelf and none of them have had any problems whatsoever. Are their engines doomed, or is there possibly some hype associated with all this "old engines are in trouble due to loss of zinc" stuff I read on the internet?

Any of those weights are good like Sam said.
In my L-78/TH400/4:10 I've been using Valvolines' VR-1 20W-50 Racing Oil that carries a minimum .116 zinc level.I'm pretty sure all three of those weights do as well.
Their "Not Street Legal" Drag Racing oils carry .112 of zinc.

Been using Rotella, but what the hell, the CAM II race gas is $8.50 a gallon why not pay more for the oil as well. i'll give it a shot at theh next oil change
